I hate the third year because it could hurt them in that summer of 2025 when they really need cap space and that's one more year potentially you could be pushing back Amen as the starting PG. But there are caveats to those two worries: 1. He's an expiring in that third year. Assuming he's still playing at this level, someone will want that third year if the Rockets want to make room. 2. Amen's size gives them a lot of roster flexibility actually. You could feasibly start Amen, Green and FVV together, and that could work. This could come back to really bite them in the ass, or this could be the signing that helps these guys play competitive basketball and get over the hump. If 2-3 of Green, Sengun, Jabari, Amen and Cam hit close to their potential, we won't care that we overpaid for FVV when they were all kids. Hell, he may even want to take a discount three years from now to re-sign if the kids pan out. (OK, yeah, this is maybe me coping a little bit. But I'm still legitimately excited.)
Rockets are just stacking up all the most inefficient players they can find. Can't wait for Dillon Brooks to be the next domino to fall. 49% TS from him last year, and 39% TS in the playoffs lol.
Rockets absolutely have a great need for him for the two years and an expiring contract isn't impossible to move if we need cap flexibility more than we need Vanvleet (Amen ready to take starting role)
I hate the third year like everyone else. And he's not a good shooter. But we needed a point guard more than anything and he was probably the best on the market. So I guess it's growing on me. But when he shoots 39% FG (not 3pt fg%) I'll be bummed. Hopefully he teaches our young ones how to play. He is probably in his prime and hopefully will play like it. It's a good move, though a bit of an overpay. If Ime likes him than I hope he's a good defender. Doubled his salary from last year. I wish I could do that. (Side note: Until about a year ago, I though is name was Fred Van Fleet.)
Rockets lost all leverage once they were out on harden. VanVleet knew this, that’s why they had to desperately overpay him.
@Clutch and others have stated don’t get caught up about the money but the years of the contracts Love this signing that’s the nature of the NBA now y’all see what jerami grant got paid. Now lock up Lopez and Brooks
FVV is a super low turnover guy, replacing a super high turnover guy, that will negate the low TS. Toronto was also an abomination spacing wise, hopefully his efficiency can bump up here
James Harden's looking at those contract numbers and he isn't happy. Not one bit, in my opinion.. Tough.
Signing mid players to massive overpays like this is how bad teams stay bad, it's not how anyone "wins".
