Hell, in that case why not go whole hog and bring back Moses Malone. I hear that Dr. J is available as well... This just goes beyond stupid and does NOTHING to address the void at PG & SG.
As reported before, Oakley is purely living on his enforcer reputation at this moment. He is not an enforcer anymore due to his age.
Maybe it's JVG's secret agenda to give all former Knicks some rings in Houston. If they cannot get the rings in NY, they might have a shot in Houston.
Sorry, but expierienced role players don't grow on trees. Where do you suggest we get another big body, off waivers or pick someone up from the nbdl. A rookie from the nbdl would probably drive jvg and nuts and we would be questioning why we got some rookie or waiver wire person instead of charles oakley who is experienced, but rather old.
On another note since we signed him for a reason he probably is not going to sit on the IR. So who do you think is going to the IR so he can have a roster spot. Boki, Pike? Or could Spoon or MoT be going to the IR since they could have an injury that necessitated the signing of Oakley.
So one of the key reasons to bringing Oakley on board is that he understands JVG's system. But the only ability anyone seems to think he has anymore is that of an "enforcer". Why would you need to understand the system if all you're going to contribute is flagrant fouls?
In case some of you don't know who he is http://www.nocturnalmagazine.net/images/photos/2003-06-22-mmvas/charlesoakley+alvinwilliams.jpg
We are Going for the Jugular I honestly believe this. I don't think JVG and CD are looking at this as some rebuilding program at all, but rather, the desire to win it ALL THIS YEAR. Seriously folks, you don't make this kind of acquisition late season unless you sincerely feel like its going to put you over the top. If indeed MoT is hurt indefinitely, that is an unambiguous negative. But Oakley will probably take minutes from Cato moreso than MoT even when MoT is healthy. I bet JVG just isn't happy about our rebounding situation and our control of the game - which is part due to the rebounding. Oakley can help control tempo by securing rebounds and keeping people off the glass. he'll also protect Yao and free him up for more shots. The only question mark I have is whether or not Oakley can still hit that 12 foot jumper which made him lethal. That was important for spacing and giving the center more room to maneuver. Mark Jackson, to date, while great with the passing, has yet to really impress me with his shooting. Maybe Oakley is still solid in shooting. I'm a believer in the pickup. theSAGE
Too bad Vin Baker didn't play for the Knicks at some point. That would have been a nice addition, scoring punch and good size. It seems to me that the whole former-Knick brigade the Rocks are developing is getting a bit absurd. It's hard to believe the BEST option out there at this juncture, was Oak.
Sorry to say but, saw this coming. But why are people complaining? At most we can sign him to a 10 day contract. We can still toss him to the curb (in 2 - 3 games) if he doesn't fit. Also, Mo and Spoon are moved to the IR list so we don't have to clear a roster spot for Oakley.
