cheap 2 year contract with second as team option is stupid move? Martin is expiring and we already suck and 3pt shooting losing dragic , lee, and bud. What sense does it make to get rid of him?
Nice post. Delfino isn't going to set the world on fire, but he's a solid vet, and gives us a defensive option at the 2 now that Lee is history. And as you pointed out, he's decent on offense. I'm fine with the signing, but only if Martin is getting moved, at least by the deadline (I hope sooner, like before training camp). Otherwise, it doesn't really make a hell of a lot of sense. As has been pointed out, why not play the young guys? I'll be surprised if we don't see a move by Morey fairly soon to deal Martin. What I'm curious about, of course, is what we might get for Martin now that we've entered Post-Dwight/Bynum Fantasyland, if he does get moved soon.
Rockets will not be a playoff team next a few seasons, and there is no point to develop player like him.
I get that, but I think Al Jefferson will make the Rockets a little better then mediocre. I think pairing a player like Jefferson with Martin would benefit K-Mart so much, and with J-Lin running the offense and Asik/Patterson being defensive studs I could see the Rockets being a playoff contending team. Tanking isn't going to automatically make us a championship team in the future. After 4 years of tanking, the Rockets could very well just be a mediocre team with young players that didn't pan out.
OKC LAC LAL Spurs Mem Minny Denver Mavs all playoff bound teams all better than us. I doubt we are making the playoffs next season unless stuff happens.
to get a better pick? Every minute that Delfino plays will be a waste. Every win Delfino gets will be a huge loss for Rockets future. It is a stupid move unless Delfino is out for the season.
I wouldn't be so sure about Minny or Dallas. I like the Timberwolves squad a lot, I think K-Love, Rubio, Budinger could thrive under Adelmen, but lets wait before we call them a playoff team.
I'm meh on the move, assuming Martin isn't traded between now and October. Will be very sour on it if McHale doesn't give Lamb major minutes to develop. Vet coaches don't want losing seasons, it tanks their career W/L record which by and large is their resume. It's a tricky situation since you don't want 3 SGs in one rotation, but you need to wait for a team out there to suffer an unexpected injury (Harden, Ginobilli, etc) to move Martin at highest value. You get crap in return if you actively shop Martin just to dump him. We had to amnesty Scola because no one would offer up a 2nd rounder for him.
I was just thinking a scenario where Martin stayed. If he didn't then it wouldn't make much sense. You have a 2nd/3rd tier star with a bunch of developing young guys.
Of course I'm not saying tanking gets the team a superstar. But a lower pick gives us a higher probability of getting a "better" player with whom the team can rebuild. I think the rookies from this past draft show promise and should be given a year to maybe pan out and mature with significant PT. This looks to be a more exciting path towards competitiveness and championship than adding middling players with burdensome contracts. More to the point, staying with cap space gives the Rockets the ability to move for a "superstar" FA next offseason.
Martin will be traded and all will be right with the world. Morey will once again be worshiped. Tanking will once again be our destiny.
I highly doubt that Carlos Delfino is the difference between a 20-win team and a 40-win team. If the team was bad enough to be one of the worst before the Delfino signing, it probably still be among the worst with Delfino.
This was pretty nasty... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5H8HdUdsYzg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I was referring to Al Jefferson though I also doubt he's that much of a difference. Also I put Rockets at 30 wins as currently constituted.
