I didn't say the Cavs had a better offseason. I didn't say they were better than us. I didn't say we weren't very efficient with the little flexibility we had this summer. I just did what you asked: Named a player the Cavs didn't overpay. Re-read my post please.
Well it is too soon to worry about that for now. Each NBA team is allowed to carry up to 20 contracts going into training camp (TC). So by the middle of TC, we will know the last 15 that will make it to the final roster. I am asuming (since I did not see it anywhere in this thread) that this is a one year guarantee and an option year (2 years total) - starting with NBA minimum $398K per annum, right?
JVG said he wanted to add another big guy and now he did. some one WILL be cut or TRADED. if we are forced to cut (in the event that we cant find a trade) then the smallest ending contract will be cut....ward. baker and moochie = $7M comming off the books. thats not a bad offer around the deadline. we must be looking for a 2-for-1 deal. hopefully for a PG.
Jones and Z are bad defensively, but what's wrong with the other three? James is pretty darn good. Hughes gambles, but he wins a good amount of the time. And Marshall is the worst defending PF in the league? When did Troy Murphy retire? Marshall's by no means terrific, but I wouldn't say he's bad. He's average at worst. At an uninformed glance, someone might say Tmac is a bad defender. But he's not. I think you're making the same mistake about Lebron james. Just because neither are lockdown defenders doesn't mean they're bad.
i agree a 100 %. people just dont realize how valuable ryan bowen is to this rockets team. he is the best one on one defender on our team.( yeah i said it!!!) hell, he was the best defensive player when he was in denver!!!!! if t5he rockets had more defenders, on our squad; we would have swept the mavericks in the play-offs easily.
Rockets add Baxter to mix Forward showed worth to team with sparkling summer By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle The Rockets' offseason stockpile of free-agent talent shiftd to the frontcourt Thursday when they signed another player, Lonny Baxter, they have targeted for months. The Rockets had hoped to sign Baxter since his star turn with their 5-0 summer-league team in Minneapolis. Baxter, going from consistently effective to occasionally dominant, averaged 21 points and 6.2 rebounds, moving the Rockets to pursue the 6-8 forward. Though Baxter, who finished last season playing in Greece, was not nearly as coveted an acquisition as Stromile Swift or Derek Anderson, he had been very much a part of the Rockets' offseason plans since early July. "He played very well for us this summer," Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson said after signing Baxter to a one-year guaranteed contract. "I think he was as attracted to us as we were to him. He felt this was the right place for him. "We like his energy, size and I think he'll be a very good defender under Jeff (Van Gundy) and the coaching staff. He can be effective in the paint and he proved on the summer team that he is a much better shooter than people thought he was. We feel fortunate to have him signed." Baxter, a member of Maryland's national championship team in 2002, has averaged 4.3 points and three rebounds in 121 games with Chicago, Toronto, Washington and New Orleans. With Baxter, the Rockets have 16 players signed to guaranteed contracts and will eventually make a move to get down to the NBA maximum of 15. They could use players who did not play last season in the last seasons of their contract — including perhaps Moochie Norris and Vin Baker — in a two-for-one deal with a team looking to move a long-term deal to get salary-cap relief next summer. The Rockets also could buy out a player, though a move like that likely would not come until well into training camp. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/3346128
Good pick up for cheap! Another big body to give us depth in our frontcourt and 6 more fouls... Most likely he will be behind Yao/Deke/JHo/Swift but in the NBA you need that kind of depth.
Could signing LBax mean that Juwan Howard along with an expiring contract, or one of our guards, might be traded in the near future. This may have been talked about earlier in the thread, I don't know. JHo has been mentioned in a couple of trade ideas already this summer. So could this be the precursor to the long awaited 2-for-1? Any ideas? --------------------------------------------------------------- I went back and re-read some of the posts, and sure enough there has been talk of this being a sign that a trade might be surfacing. But, the posts came to no conclusions. So, any news about the possibility of a trade to talk about?
I dont believe this to be the. I think Baxter coming on board simply solidifies the front court. B/c in the past we've been hurt by banged up big bodies, the Rockets wanted to add some depth. But anything is possible if the right deal is in the table. If nothing else were to get done this offseason I would be OK . We'll have to wait and see how the changes that HAVE been made work out. Baxter was a no-brainer in that we needed depth at the 4 and that he played so well, displaying a lot of promise. Would be interesting to see how well he does in real game action. It IS nice to see the Rockets making sound personnel decisions as they have been doing this offseason. I cant wait for the season to start.
Ok, I take back what I said. It's no longer premature to think one of our ending contracts won't start the season with us.
Good, sound move to fill out our big man depth. Bowen and Baxter will be good role players for this team...guys like this are key for certain situations and depth for injuries. They also bring an interesting dynamic to the end of the bench--hungar, aggressiveness, positive attitude, etc. Another solid CD acquisition...I believe our next season will show he truly deserves consideration for exec of the year.
