Was Rubio ever really a trade target or the machination of someone's fantasy?

He's had a crush on Rubio, Cousins, Biyombo.
To be fair, most of his targets have turned out to be pretty good players.

Restricting player movement in the CBA the year before Harden's free agency ironically helps the Rockets now that they suck. Though it also gives more of a reason to build through the draft (and trading high draft picks), which Les will not allow.

    So treadmill it is.

I think Windhorst said we were sniffing around him at draft time.

Unless Windhorst and jopat are one and the same, there might be some validity to this thread. MIGHT.

This his best offensive game of his career. I've never seen him play that aggressively scoring the ball before. His jumpers are flukes but his driving game looks real good.

Afther tonight Kriss Dunn game, Minnesota can trade Rubio

    Dunn is a beast.
With Wiggins and Towns they are contenders in 2 or 3 years.

Dunn was the best NBA ready player coming into the draft.

Westbrook like skills. Reminds me of Francis as well.

Rubio should easily be dealt away. Now or in Feb.

So now that we are where we are, I feel like I can finally seriously consider the idea of trading for Rubio.

Things have settled down a bit, we have a little less than $10m in cap space and no one has acquired Rubio yet. I feel like people are pretty confident that Dunn will be a player in this league.

I've always said that Rubio will develop a 3pt shot eventually. I don't know when that is. However, we can take a 2 year, $25m risk that it happens while he's here and on the court he'll as wide open on offense here as he ever was. His passing is unquestionably among the best in the league. His defense is apparently fairly good. If he can hit a catch and shoot 3pter, he could really succeed here by learning how to move without the ball at times.

They do need some insurance though so I think it would realistically have to cost us Patrick Beverley. It would require another asset as well, or we could throw in Brewer and a 1st rounder maybe? How about:

    Beverley + Brewer + top 15 protected 2017 1st rounder + 2018 2nd rounder

for Rubio. I think that's a good deal for both sides. They get some veteran depth and a pick, and I feel like Thibs is looking for some veteran help and he will aim for homecourt advantage this year. Does he feel that he can do that without Rubio, the most experienced PG on the roster? That's tricky too.

I don't think Minnesota is gonna acquire Brewwer for a 3rd time but I could be wrong..... Getting Rubio is gonna cost Ariza you can pretty much but on it with a coach like thibs

Wouldn't you demand at least one unprotected 1st round pick if not a 1st and a 2nd from Minnesota to take that albatross of a contract known as Ricky Rubio?

Force Minnesota to take Brewer, KJ and give us at least 1 unprotected 1st round pick for Rubio. That way when he's riding the pine because MDA can't stand to see his offense going 4 against 5, that 13.5 mil this season and 14.3 mil next season will not seem like an complete waste of salary cap space.

Watching this makes you understand why his career 2pt FG% is .368. Think about that for a second, .368 over the course of a 5 year career where his highest all time 2pt FG% is .380!!!!! Beyond pathetic.

We need talent with upside. We don't have enough on the roster. If we aren't rebuilding we have to take risks. Betting on upside makes a lot of sense. Rubio has a lot of upside and in my opinion, he's already a good player. His weakness is shooting, which can be improved, but he is improving. It costs to get talent; especially on the younger side. We shouldn't hesitate to trade anyone not named Gordon, Anderson or Harden for a guy like Rubio. If we can get him without giving up picks all the better. We need a point guard who can take care of the ball, run the offense, d up other 1's, and hit the open shot. Rubio more than checks the box on those and he's only 25. He will continue to get better as a shooter, but the other stuff he has you simply can't teach!

wow, what world do you live in that Rubio's 12 million per year is an albatross.

Its not 12 million its 13.5 for this season and 14.3 for next season. That is a major albatross as dead money. If he is sitting on the bench then that will be dead money. If he can't hit more than 37% of his 2pt shots he will sit on the bench for MDA.

    Albatross.

Look at the trash that's on the court with him...... A player like Rubio will never flourish or reach his potential without "real" shooter and slashers around him.... His shot making ability is not mature enough to handle that......

I personally think Minnesota is making a mistake trying to trade him with what they have on the court now....

Rubio is on a steady incline as far as shooting go and I'd say that the knee injury hurt his shooting improvement due to the sheer mechanics of shooting......

In MDA offense you need a floor General and shot generator and that's what Rubio is..... Would it be ideal if he were a above average shoot???? Of course but he not right now but he does everything else you need in the offense.....

Plus have you ever watched the players playing with Rubio..... They all seem to have more life and they play a bit harder IMO......

Simply put, he makes the players around him better..... Even Kevin love doesn't look like the same Kevin love without Rubio......

You are exactly right!!!! He'll be worthless in MDAs offense without a reliable jumpshot...

He has played with good players and none of that helped him. He is what he is. Kevin Love doesn't look the same because he is not top dog in Cleveland, he is 3rd dog if that.

I don't see why Thibs would move Rubio - great contract, and their guard depth isn't ideal. Rubio/Lavine/Dunn are the only 3 guys, I think, that you should see on the court. I would be surprised if Rubio is moved this year - Let Dunn develop & look to add Guard depth via FA or smaller deals, specifically backup 1s and 2s, then move Rubio.

From the Rockets perspective, It'll be hard to get a deal done. Deal would probably have to start with Ariza, but where does Houston go from there? If KJ has a great SL, and maybe if he excels in the new system, Thibs could be interested. You'd also probably need to add Bev. Is Rubio really worth Ariza + KJ + Bev?

Personally, I'd look to add a guy like Shane Larkin to a nice 2 year contract, with a TO for YR2. If PG is still our biggest weakness, we should have $$ to spend in 2017, or assets to trade for guys like Rubio, to make a very nice upgrade - PG FA depth is pretty legit in 2017. Personally, I think Larkin would be the perfect backup Point in MDA's system.

Rubio would be great for our bigs if his shooting continues to improve. I do still wonder about his fit on the team with Harden. Not saying it wouldn't work, just...cautious.

I can imagine Les "Ticket Sales" Alexander hearing shrieks of "Reeee-keeee!!!" from the TC seats, and Daryl "Loves me a Bargain" Morey having interest, but how real any of this might be is pure conjecture.

I think Larkin is underrated as a player but not sure if he's enough of a play maker to be a perfect fit for the offense.... I'm almost thinking that you just can't go with an ok fit at pg. it has to be almost perfect for it to be successful and I mean contention successful......
