Is this the only logo in sports where a single letter is used that doesn't represent the name of the city? Will away jerseys have the word Houston on it or will it just say China?
God... soooo boring! You can vote on rockets.com if you feel so inclined... "What were they thinking?!"
Exactly. And if you're absolutely convinced that simple logos are a giant mistake, please call Nike and tell them they've missed the boat all these years. And while you're at it, call McDonalds. Any five-year-old could draw those golden arches. And Apple. And IBM, and Coke ... especially Coke, that monocrhomatic look is going to cause keep them from being the best recognized brand in the world. Please, please, save them from themselves. That said, I really do appreciate all the commentary ... good and bad. It helps to know where people's heads are at. (I'm a marketer ... it's critical.) As for the comment about more dimension -- it depends on the use. Where appropriate, you'll see us use versions that have depth and shading. It was important to have a logo that could work both as flat art and as a dimensionalized piece. It also needed to work on a variety of backgrounds, and it needed to be scalable in size. To do that, you have to go simple. That's why the big boy brands do it that way. Tim
In two days this hat's been to more places than i ever will. So did anyone catch Mr. Hat's interview last night?
I reallly agree. I like the logo and I think you made a great decision. I am over the age to like the flashy cartoonish logo on my clothes. Nike logo is classic. Beside with simpler logo you can do so many thing with it when put on to different types of products. Also as a foreigner living in the U.S, I think that the new logo will be recognized easier for the international fans. Of course! The Rocket HAS TO WIN and make the playoff to boost the recognition of the Logo. In my opinion, Good product and Simpler, easier to regonize logo will boost the sale.
FrontRowJoe, Do you mind if I animate your idea? I already have a different ring color on the other animation I made, and it looks like your design will have a better launch. B
wow, the hat traveled back in time to visit the NBC late show w/ a very young letterman. who gave the hat the flux capacitor? i dont like the new logo, but if it can travel thru time than maybe its not that bad.
My gripe isn't about the simplicity, it's about the design itself. Infact, I'll go as far as to say that it isn't simple. Sure, it's only one color, but look at the design, you've got a rocket in there, there some drippy stuff. .. i mean flames, the ring, it seems ridiculously tall, I guess that's why the logo is so small on hats, and with it being vertical, it adds to the affect of making it seem too tall/long. I like what FrontRowJoe did. A little tweaking and now it rezembles a sports logo, because that is what the thing is supposed to be, not a corporate logo.
The problem with this is that it looks like an expansion hockey team logo from south carolina or mississippi. In design oriented exercises, tilting images to create "motion" or italicizing font are often gimmicks used to create interest where there is inherently none (see cleveland cavaliers unimaginative uniform). The flames on the R already suggest motion, the tilting would be repetitive. Also, tilting the logo projects a negative image for the franchise--unsure of itself, looking for attention in a cheap manner, short-term gains, impulsiveness, loud. The new logo, in my opinion, projects an image of confidence, stability, durability, and a healthy disregard for cliches in sports.
Good work Tim. You can't please everyone. We will all get used to it once Van gundy kicks this thing off.
damn ya'll relax......this isnt even our whole logo......this is like the new R......thas all it is.....jus chill.....the rest will come in time.....and frankly it isnt really that bad.....nice job Tim. Looking forward to an exciting year!
Is it? I know this is unscientific because of the lighting, materials, etc... I would have to see PMS200 on the material, but I work in a graphics shop and I'm printing it out on a color calibrated printer. We'll see.
Top one is from the bulls site. Bottom is with PMS200 added. Tim could be right depending on lighting and materials. If so, The Bulls red is the best. So there for why to go Tim/Rockets. And thanks to Tim for being so communicative about things.
For a New Orleans perspective, I must say that it is a very simplistic design. Not very flashy. Seems like those that chose to discuss it on HornetsReport.com aren't exactly overwhelmed by the "R". It does have something familiar to it - I first thought of the Toyota logo (interlocking ovals to form a T) and the Star Trek logo, but it was the Van Halen logo that I thought it most resembled (letters in loops) But the plain mono-color just doesn't work for me.
Tim, the red is okay. I just checked my PMS chart, and its not as bright/magenta as some were saying. VIBE, I am on a color calibrated monitor, and your bottom red has more magenta, then my PMS chart is showing. What type of color calibrated printer are you using? Dye-sub? Of course you had to change your image from CYMK/SPOT to RGB for the internet, so I guess thats why its showing more magenta. Tim, I am still not sure about the logo, from a graphic designer perspective, its just okay. BUT PLACING THE TEXT on the left and right of the logo is aweful. Thats what us designers call a last ditch attempt to make the logo work. I bet they spent months trying to come up with a cool design for the text, but gave up. The symbol is fine, but the text layout has to go. I hope you did not spend more then a few thousand on it. If this freaky clothing designer charged you a 7 digits, then you got sc*^*!
when you go to rockets.com and look at the wallpaper you can download it actually looks pretty good. I think some people have overreacted to the new logo. Good job Tim!
