The new unis will make or break this new logo. I would hold back complete judgement until then. SO HURRY UP AND SHOW US THE NEW UNIS!!! Here is a black and white version on the new logo for a different perspective...
Its boring like the team is going to be with having a Knicks Head Coach . I wish the old red and yellow was in the mix.
All we need now is to borrow the old Undertaker's theme used by the Spurs when introing the Nets in the Finals
That looks like an early 1920s or 1930s logo... we definitely went retro this time .... wayyy retro....
B's attempt at photoshoping the Logo Here is my first attempt at trying to improve the logo. Let me know if you have any problems viewing it. I can't link directly to it. B
I think the logo looks pretty good. I like it. I know some people will not like it no matter what, and in some cases people just have different tastes. Depending on what it looks like with the uniform I would say I'm pleased.
Paul Rand would be fairly satisfied with this logo. Basically, they took the same concept for the last logo and made it a little more sophisticated. The woman (Eiko?) thats doing this is known for really dense designs, but any two bit designer knows that sports logos have to be formally simple (not too many lines) , push the idea of showing strength but without being completely obvious (a rocket with teeth anyone?) This design pushes the same button as the last logo but doesn't shove it down our throat. its a rocket, its vertical, but is very simple. The last jersey looked like it was designed on a computer. Since this designer is a true clothing designer she isn't making that mistake. She originally talked about being her designs being very futuristic and new, but she isn't the only one involved. its a collaboration with the Rockets organization. They will think realistically she will think creatively.... In the end it will work. I like the new logo. It's kind of strange, but has anyone noticed the eastern script look of the "houston rockets" type? i think she altered an existing typeface to make it a little more eastern looking. she's japanese, yao is chinese...... just a thought...
I keep looking at that launchpad thing and wanting to read it as a "C." "Ladies and Gentlemen, your Houston Crockets!" I'm old. I don't like it. I won't like it until they go back to at least some close derivation of the Champ unis. When you're old and the players change and the uniforms change and the arenas change, it's gets harder to think of them as "My" team. There's no damn continuity. At least there's ESPN Classic where I can get my fix of real Rockets playing real basketball in real uniforms. I grew up with Rudy and Calvin and Mike and Moses, cheered Ralph and Dream and Otis and Clyde. Now, interest is waning and this design does nothing for me. If this is the big logo, the Rockets are what Austin has become... somewhat recognizable, capable of inspiring a few moments of excitement, but nothing like what used to be. God, this is depressing. I feel like I've spent these last few years in a Gulag only to be released to a Nazi Work Camp. Bring back freedom. Bring back the real Rockets uniforms.
its called brainwashing. Alot of you are sloowly likeing it.That means your telling yourself in a defense mechanism to like it,till you actually believe it.Its called brainwashing.Stick to your first impression because that is what other fans of teams will think when they see our logo, and they wont think its hip at all and will not sell. When it doesnt sell(unis) then the suits will know Im right that it sucks. The reason it sucks is because it is one color. They tried to make it 3-d but failed to realize that one color makes it look like 8-bit Nintendo quality. Stupid. Thats what happens when you put suits together and tell them to be creative. Hearing Tim on 610 answered all my questions. Its not about being creative or new,its about the cash registers.
Another thing... It's going to look damn tacky if we win a championship and the banner with this crap on it is raised next to the original two. The banners the Celtics won in the 1960's look just like the ones they won in the 1980's. Same for the Lakers. Please go back.
Here's why I like the logo 1. It's simple. I'm sorry, but in sports logos, the simpler, the better. Look at the great franchises/logos: Yankees, Packers, Longhorns, Cowboys, 49'ers. These Logos are all very simple, and feature either one symbol/silhouette or a initials. Logos that feature both mascots and lettering tend to be more forgettable, like, e.g., the Rockets old logo, the Warriors current logo, even the Cavs new logo. THe reason? I guess because it doesn't build that same instinctive recognition, when you see the star, you know its the cowboys. When you see something like the Cavs new logo, from a distance, or just glance at it, it takes a few extra split seconds to figure it out: What did that say? What was that thing poking through? Was that a Saber or a blue rocket with teeth? etc. etc. etc. 2. I like the asian feel. In fact, it does seem distinctly japanese to me. THat's just a personal preference, as I have been interested casually in japanese art and design recently. the Japanese are very good at designing things to be simple looking yet effective. Case in point: Look at the Nintendo Gamecube, then look at microsoft Xbox. BIg bulky american things just don't look so hot next to simpler stuff 3. I think the master stroke is the Rocket-like effects of the vertical lines of the R. This way we get the best of both worlds, a quick and easy recognizable symbol/initials, as well as the representation of a rocket, without the busy-ness of the Rockets old logo. It incorporates both letters and pictures seamlessly and subtly. 4. I also like the effect of the oval, it creates a vaguely 3D feel to the thing, which isn't really necessary, but does at least make it more interesting. 5. I don't really think this logo is trendy. I think the simplicity of it makes it more traditional than trendy, although it contains subtelties that other traditional logos don't have. However, as I said before, I think it has the best of both worlds. But that's just one man's opinion.
I take back the Gulag quote... this is much worse. This is like running to the newstand after the first Championship to finally read a Sports Illustrated article on the World Champion Houston Rockets complete with a Dream photo on the cover and finding a damn hippie-ass soccer player on the cover. Never bought one since.
much better. See DC baller, even some dude on the forum in 5 minutes managed to outwit the suits and make it alot better. The colors HAVE to match the design. Not all colors are for all designs. The Look of the logo is goth and blood, and vampireish. If the colors were black, then it would look really cool and even I would like it.But its white.WHITE> Sheesh. Talk about oxymoron. You have a goth look with blood font and red blood color, and then make the damn R white on the caps. Horrible marketing decision.Of the hats were black, with a red R then everyone here would love it.
I may be suffering the effects of they hype leading to this moment, but WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The thing about the that logo is that it doesn't have anything about it that makes you automatically know that it's a sports logo. What's worse is that it actually does, the ring there is supposed to be a hoop, but people are having trouble realizing it, particulary people who are ok with it. Jeff and others where right when they said that it looks out of place, it's more suited for a night club or something. When I first saw it, it was not pleased at all. That logo belongs to a company, not a sports franchise, it is severely out of place. My first thought was of when I play a videogame and after the main publisher does their thing like "EA Games, challenge everything," a bunch of other companies pop up who worked on the game. That R belongs to one of those video game makers. Mostly everybody hated the old unis, myself included, but the logo didn't bother me much at all. People talk about the dildo with teeth, but when I look at the new logo, it see a phallice with a scythe about to cut it and it makes me very uncomfortable. The vapor trails that look like dripping blood add to that effect btw. Look at the draft hat, that R is based on our current stuff. It may not be simple, but it's freaking cool and it looks like a sports logo. I'd be damn happy with that. Check out the big block lettering, that kicks ass. Some of you people who are saying that the logo meets the criteria of simple and clean are pissing me off. If I said I wanted a blonde woman with big breasts, you could fork lift some pasty Jabba the Hutt from a trailer park and tell me "there you go, blonde and with big breasts." See where I'm going? I wanted simple and clean too, but I also wanted classy and timeless, not trendy. I want something that will stand the test of time, something that we won't have to change 10 years from now, something that will go on for 50 years with the only slight changes to match the times. We don't need a freaking rocket anywhere in the logo. I don't see a lake on the Laker's L and I don't see a freaking druid hanging off of the C on the Celtics logo. . . well there is a leprauchan, but he doesn't show up on their jerseys.
