Guys, there is no way he is taking Rafer's place and being our PG...do you seriously expect his mid-30's legs to stay in front of the likes of Paul, Nash, Ellis, etc..? He'll be a very nice backup, but he is not a PG at this stage of a career, just a spotup 3pt shooter with some nice passing abilities.
I've read every post as usual and I agree it was a solid value signing, but barry is another old player that needs someone to get him a shot. He is a smart decision maker with the ball and is 6'6, but he isn't as tough or scrappy as Jon. He was in and out of popovich dog house because of guards either posting and being physical or getting by him. Its a reason why he played 17 mins per on a team that had big time scoring droughts. Like I've said, the bar has been set so low with below avg players like hayes and head that even avg looks great. I do agree that he can shoot when he's open, but as we've seen against a avg utah defense, they will stay close enough to shooters and limit their attempts. They know if they close out reckless, the rox don't have guys that can get off the 3pt line and attack the rim and barry is no different. Also, why do u think the spurs got a 28 yr old mason jr that can do the same thing, but is stronger and more atheletic? What happens tracy misses his 10 games? Is he capable of playing 25-30 mins when he's avg 17 and is 36. I just think fans are too elated about a marginal move. Maybe morey has another wing player in mind also. Also, I don't think the 4-time champs even view the rox as a real threat.
Barry should be very positive for us. Best place to look when evaluating a trade is the forums of his last team. Read this: Spurs Talk Link I had a lot of fun reading their comments, I'm sure you will too. They are accusing Dennis Lindsey of being a Rockets SPY. Funny as hell.
All this signing means is if Aaron, Donte, or especially Luther is sucking the place out then Rick isn't handcuffed and have to play other players out of position to match up with other teams. That should be clear. Honestly I think he's just another veteran presence for the young guys ala Deke. And for the people who keep reminding others Brent isn't the Sonic player he used to be, thanks Captain Obvious...
He will be ahead of luther or greene on this season's depth chart. They didn't bring him here to just mentor young players, they want his smarts, shooting and size on the floor.
Any acquisition that directly reduces Luther Head's playing time is an A+, regardless of anything else.
For those of you who are feeling nonchalant about the signing and think he'll have a similar stay as his brother in Houston is dead wrong. Yes, he's a great shooter, but I don't think you guys understand HOW good his shooting actually is. First statistically, he LEAD THE LEAGUE in TS% for guards. Usually to get a high TS%, you have to have lots of inside shots but he shot 90% of his shots as jumpers. Of the 20 top TS% last season, only four of them were volume 3 point shooters and he was at the top of even that short list. As far as hitting open shots go we're getting the BEST IN THE LEAGUE. And for what? The LLE? Second, this guy has one of the quickest release on a set shot. He barely gets off the ground. For people concerned about his age, even if his legs go, he'll still be drilling 3's without jumping. Again, we got him for the freaking LLE. He's also a great passer. His assist rate is good for 10th for his position. He's especially adept at feeding the post. No longer do we have to see Luther's seemingly pointless driving across the baseline while ignoring Yao. One more thing, he never turns the ball over. Yes, it has to do with him a spot up shooter, but even considering that he handles the ball pretty well. Did I mention we got him for the LLE? Even if he spontaneously combusts sometime soon we didn't really lose anything in terms of money and cap space except an awesome weapon.
One of the posters on Spurs talk said Barry was their best back up point guard. Also why do they keep calling him mango tree?

Please, enough with the stats. The dude has a very hard time on defense, he cannot consistently create his own shot, and he is largely subjected to the perimeter. There is a reason he did so little in the post season last year and didn't get many minutes in the SA system. With that said, I agree it is a VERY solid signing considering the price we payed.
We'll see...it all depends if luther or Greene is ineffective when Adelman puts them on the floor, luther...we kinda of know his habits already. The rest is speculation at this point, unless you're Rick Adelman.
Brent Barry at age 36 runs circles around Luther Head on head's best day. And greene has a lot to prove before he ever cracks an NBA rotation. Barry today is already ahead of both guys in the rockets rotation for this season. Dorsey has a much better shot of finding minutes as a rookie this year than does Greene because rebounding, athleticism and defense are easy to translate to the next level.
Not hard enough to preven the Spurs from being a top defensive team with him playing significant minutes. Not his job. We needed more guys who are good on the perimeter. 40%+ on 3pointers good. He got 15 mpg in playoffs. Pretty significant. Almost 1/3 of the game. The number went up to 20 mpg in the Lakers series, and he shot 46% from the 3 point arc. Barry's minutes were pretty regular during the last few years-- and he was a contributor in these minutes. With that said, I agree it is a VERY solid signing considering the price we payed.[/QUOTE]
I LOVE this move. LOVE it. The Barry's, all of them, play with pride and grit til they play no more. I don't expect him to be a savior of any sort at 36, but I expect him to be solid as many minutes as he's able to play. I expect him to play smart, I expect him to play hard, I expect him to hit his shots. Even if it's only for five minutes a night and even if it's only 20 games out of the year. I expect to know what we're getting when he steps on the floor. And after two years of Head occupying the place he's got now in the rotation, that will be one hell of a relief. As for the next moves, whatever will be will be. We're in sort of a screwed situation. If Yao and Mac are healthy, we'll be as much improved as anyone with the possible exception of Portland. If they aren't, we'll be lucky to get to the first round again let alone get out of it. But the franchise has chosen to ride these two great and unreliable players for now. If it works, if they are both healthy next year, it will be the first time. But if it works for the first time, it will be worth all the waiting. Our core knows the Adelman system and they thrive in it. We're not going to get much in the way of upgrades without moving Yao or Mac and we're not going to move them. If (IF IF IF) they are healthy, we contend next year. If they're not we don't. And that's the bottom line until one or the other of them is gone. But Barry's a great addition either way.
A lot of their posters are really bellyaching over their loss of Barry. I didn't see one post that was happy about it. Bodes really well for us.
