If the price came down to $160 million then certainly no. I almost puked when I first saw the news. I'd rather have James Harden going MVP mode averaging 40 and a 1st round exit than Paul tagging along suffocating our cap and wasting Harden's prime. All the assets lost in the trade to LAC, so be it. None of the pieces were a game changer anyway. Paul was extremely fun for the year he was here but at $160 million? Even if he was in the Clipper days it'd still be a tossup.
Tillman being “cheap” isn’t the issue. The real issue is that he is paying out the ass for a guy who isn’t worth half of what he’s making. Morey’s bad contracts for Anderson and Chris Paul have bitten this team in the ass and will continue to do so for years.
Anyone who's complaining about Chris Paul, just remember: game 5 against Utah last year. Game 5 against GSW too for that matter. Health is always a concern. But his ability to show up when the stakes are highest isn't.
I think everyone wanted Chris Paul back until they saw the price tag and the number of years on the deal.
It’s done, he signed. Good thing it was him (who showed he can be worth it) rather than someone else. Move on.
Without another superstar Harden bolts just like AD. Cp3 was that, and hopefully once healthy can still be that. What are the alternatives? Which other superstar was dropping into our laps?
This statement is so ironic because he didn't show up in the game we needed him most in the last playoffs. That's the problem us skeptics see. If Chris Paul was as sturdy as Harden, then the 160M price tag might have been worthy it. But we all know that he is not. He missed crucial games in three of the past four postseasons. And he is not getting any younger.
I have no problem paying CP0 44 million during the 17-18 season. I have a serious problem paying him 44 million during the 21-22 season. There should have been a team option for the 4th year.
Chris Paul from his clipper days is one of the greatest players of all time. If players are going to be paid $160 million than that CP3 is easily one of the deserving ones. Even last years Paul would be worth it. I have no idea what this current version is worth but it sure is looking sketchy. I’m sure Morey battled with the decision but ultimately he had to keep him. I’d have done the same thing.
Au contraire. I think of him and David West as one of the best duos during that Nola Hornets stay. They just competed with Duncan.
Cp3's starting to play like the old him again, 18 5 4 5 the previous game, 15 11 this game with a blistering 17 +/-. Look out! Cp3 about to shimmy on all the haters!
Actually, if CP3 came off the books we would have plenty of money to sign a high quality FA. I would have never offered a 4 year deal. 2, maybe 3 years but NEVER 4 years to a 34 year old guy with a history of injuries. Nah, CP3’s contract is worse than Anderson’s. We’re stuck with it so hopefully CP3 manages to stay healthy. Honestly, how is it that people think Morey is so smart when he can’t negotiate a reasonable contract with an often-injured player? CP3 got exactly what he wanted.
We overpaid, no doubt, but here we are, so best to make the best of it......which I think Morey is doing. Never seen so many quality players dumped on the market - the SuperMax is changing the NBA where you have a couple of players sucking up all the cap room and everyone else is on a min contract. Would not be surprised if the Union opts to fix that. DD
Clippers obviously didn't think much of giving him a long term contract like the current one that's why they traded him when they knew they weren't going to extend him. In the early LAC days sure that's a no brainer but past 30 Jerry West was never going to pay for CP. Keeping Chris Paul would be the top choice and I'm a huge fan of CP all the way back to his NOLA days. But given Morey and his aptitude to finding good players on good contracts, giving CP this mammoth of a deal in the middle of James Harden's prime just means there is 0 flexibility at all and this team is set in concrete for the remainder of James Harden's golden years. It sure isn't going to bring us any significant results. Could have had Jimmy Butler for example who really didn't take a lot to get but given our cap situation we weren't going to touch him as we were never going to go into the luxury tax to extend him. This is an example of just how much we are hindered by this albatross of a contract on average production. If we were the Cavaliers then sure give him 5 years $200 million and it wouldn't make a difference long term. But now every dollar counts.
You do realize that the Rockets has NO CHOICE but to sign Chris Paul, barring major injury. They made a promise to him. If the reneged on the President of the players’ association, it would have cost dearly with players in the future.
