It's going to cost us a lot to move from the 25th to the 18th. This Head stuff to the Wiz is total BS IMO. I could see the Rockets trading the 25th for a role player vet or trading it for a future 1st rounder if they can't or don't find it useful to move into the 2nd round.

Smart post. We always get excited about draft day (and I'm excited), but this is a thin draft overall. And when you look at the stats (thanks Spacemoth), most drafts are pretty thin outside the lottery, unless you have that magical #24 pick, where 17% become stars! Can we trade up to 24?

I think it depends on who's there: I would grab up Batum and not look back if he's available.

The 33 and 36 have something special that 13 and 27 doesn't: No rookie salary scale.

I'm guesing a lot of the early 2nd rounders will be used to target foreign players who may stay overseas for a couple of years, develop there, but will also receive significantly more thant salary scale money to stay there (for example, Tiago Splitter). These kind of guys you can draft with a 2nd rounder and if they turn out to be great, you can pay them a competitive salary (up to the MLE if you are over the cap), but if you draft with a 1st rounder-- particularly a late first rounder, you may be screwed (for example, see Tiago Splitter again) cuz you are forcing the kid to give up money to play for you.

I'm not sure what Rudy Ferenandez's story is... maybe he's hoping to get the money back in the long run, but I'd bet he is giving up some money for the next couple years.

    good thinking.

    - more salary room for signing a veteran.

    - no guarantee contract, more flexibility, not immediate help anyway. I have no fascination about late 1st round pick.

    - not 2 much drop off in talents.

    - 2nd round picks even if we sign them is 700K for 2 years. more flexibility.

Maybe the Rockets can ask for the T-wolves first pick in the second round and McCants.

Splitter was a first round pick.

You are right and also regarding the prior post he was mentioned in, I don't think San Antonio got screwed by not having signed him.....on the contrary Splitter is absolute trash as a big man and would have been a wasted contract for them...

A first-round pick gets guaranteed money, meaning a guaranteed salary cap hit. A second-round pick gets no guarantees. If you don't think you can get anything good with a late first-rounder, you're better off trading into the top of the second round, maybe even straight-up.
