Cavalier got Irving because they have large enough caproom to eat Davis' bad contract and got #1 pick from Clippers. Every bit of caproom counts, and we are building for a few years down the road.

Aldrich's pnr defense is bad, and he offers little upside. He's the kind of player you need to fill the gap if you're contending(like Lakers value Hill's contribution).

It's hard to get rid of average players after committing contract. At worst he played better just like Hill did, and we can still sign him around 3-5 mils a year just like Lakers did to Hill. But that's unlikely, and don't forget we need to develop TJ, DMO, White, Smith with playing time.

Morey insisted that we only need young players with star potential, or players with friendly contracts which are easy to trade.

Why are the Rockets wasting money on these scrubs? Now the're gonna be stuck here another year. TJones, Dmo & White need those minutes. Patterson is who he is a jump shooting tweener. Morris is who he is an even more tweener jump shooting tweener. These guy are career bench players.

As are most of the purported 7-footers when measured barefoot.

Aldrich has the exact same standing reach as Dwight Howard.

It's funny how everyone Clutchfans user is back on Morris's genitals again. Damn near everybody was screaming bust just this past summer. Typical phoney Rockets fans.

Morris was bad last year-- even the D-League team was 2-8 with him on it and much better without him-- and had a bad attitude, b****ing to Jerome Solomon about being assigned to RGV. In his limited NBA action, he was a non-factor on the court.

His attitude and play improved over the summer. Nobody is "on his genitals" aside from you. People simply are observing facts and reacting objectively.

So, no Aldrich option. Guess I was wrong, but understand their thinking.

They have 3 more non-guaranteed deals (4 if you count Parsons, but it's lock that he comes back at under $1M): Delfino, Machado and Smith. If you waive just Delfino, they'd have more than $15.2M in cap room (assuming the cap stays at $58.044M), if they also waive Machado and Smith, the cap room goes up to $16.9M.

I think Delfino gets traded at the deadline ala Camby.

I figure this move is about retaining cap flexibility, as well as the uncertainty of how good Aldrich will be. I don't think it has anything to do with Morey going after a specific big, as some are saying.

Bima makes an excellent point; not picking up his option hurts his trade value (assuming his production is solid), but even on what is effectively a one-year deal, I still think you could trade him for a 2nd rounder around the deadline to a playoff team looking for center depth.

This is consistent with Morey's long term strategy: Either commit contracts to young players with star potential, or collect good value players on expiring contract(or with team option next year) as possible trade assets.

Players like Aldrich/Hill are not bad, but don't fit our plan. BTW, Greg Smith's height, wingspan, standing reach, veritcal, strength and young age make him a much better prospect(Yes, the overall package is closer to levels of Drummond, Anthony Davis and Favors), and he's showing progress.

The low odd of this happening, as well as very little extra return should it happen, is hardly worth the extra $3mil guaranteed. Which is the difference between being able to offer someone max/near-max(4yr/$60mil), and offering a deal more in the 4yr/$50mil range.

Aldrich was basically given up as worthless by OKC, so the odds of him becoming Asik-lite next year, which is his ceiling really, is pretty low, maybe ~5%? And if he reaches that, how much extra can the Rockets get in a trade with a longer contract? A mid-2nd round pick? A 1st rounder that goes up maybe 5 spots? On a team with gazillion youngsters with no playing time, does it really matter?

Overall, there's very little upside to extending Aldrich, but can potentially handcuff the Rockets on going after some surprise FA(one or two always pop up every year as a surprise breakout player). Perfectly logical move by Morey.

I don't think he will get major minutes; Ppat and Dmo will get the backup minutes at the 5 spot; hopefully some team will be willing to trade for him for a second round pick (or package him up with one of our young PF for a first round pick)
