ROCKETS' PASS ON MINER WAS MAJOR SHOCK TO HORRY
It's 8:30 Wednesday night and fans at Miami Arena and the Summit in Houston are thinking the same thing.

The Rockets are about to make the No. 11 selection in the NBA Draft, one spot ahead of the Heat, and Southern Cal scoring sensation Harold Miner is still on the board

I remember fans booing the Horry pick at the draft party watch at the Summit because they wanted Minor.

I think I still have pictures of the Miller Light girls on stage from that day somewhere. Part of the picture may contain the whiteboards where they scribbled the names of the draft picks down as they were called out, if I recall. I remember the only thing I could think was "what about Miner?" Oh wait... there was also "who?" Everybody else was pretty much booing or showing disappointment. :D

Drafting well is one thing... developing players and creating a winning culture is another. No Horry --> no Drexler years later.

Well we saw how that turned out. In the words of Scola, "He look OK".

Ugh...not that he was a bad player or a bad guy or anything, but...that 86 draft

    20: Buck Johnson
    24: Sabonis
    25: Mark Price
    27: Rodman
    30: Nate McMillan
    46: Hornacek

    60: Drazen Petrovic
68: Baskerville Holmes (One of the greatest names ever, so I had to add it. Sadly, he had a tragic ending.)
    108 : Jay Bilas (jk)

Seven rounds of the NBA Draft and you realize there are probably 5 too-many rounds.

Imagine Mark Price with Hakeem. He was the outside shooter and PG they wanted all those years.

Yeah, but hey, we did get his brother later. :D

It's funny, but in that draft, they tried (again) to get the outside shooter they wanted... Conner Henry was their 4th round pick. He was going to be our Larry Bird. Then he left and joined the Celtics. Ironically, the year before, we tried to get that shooter, too, but drafting the Steve Harris from Tulsa.

Also in that draft was Andre Turner. All I remember about him was him busting his eardrum and being out for the year or something. In college, he was on that stacked Memphis team with Baskerville, Bedford, and Lee.

One last one from looking at that draft... Milt Wagner. If you want to feel really old, his son was Dajuan Wagner. Dajuan Wagner's son, DJ, could be a top 5 pick in the 2024 draft.
