part of the reason the Spurs traded us Scola and Butler for Span was to SAVE money and get UNDER the tax threshold. if they are currently right at or just over the tax, they may not want to re-sign Barry.... I guess we shall see soon enough.
i think spurs want to resigne him,but they need wait 30 days,so we have a good chance to bring him in.
I thought getting Stoudamire put San Antonio over the cap initially. Very interesting if we could add this guy. He would be good for us in the playoffs to take Head's minutes because he played like absolute dog shyt against Utah last year. Get it done Morey!
That's not gonna happen. Francis is an unknown. Morey and Les are gonna wait to see how he is after the surgery. If he sucks, and he can't play cause of the injury, Francis retires and comes off the books for medical reasons. If he's good, then that's an extra chip we got in the big picture.
And didn't Morey say something about Francis' contract expiring next year so it could be used in a trade next year along with Bobby Jacksons?
Didn't we just sign Bobby Jones to our last roster spot. Our we going to cut him before he puts on a uniform. If not who gets cut. Green? Is this the end of the Novak experiment?
we have a great shot at him. the spurs probably would only sign him to the minimum because they are already over the luxury tax line. if he wants to sign with the spurs he would have to wait 30 days and that would put him past the cut off date to be eligible for the playoffs. looking at the other suitors: the lakers can't offer much PT behind kobe and odom at the 2/3. the C's can't offer much PT behind allen and pierce, they also are a big move. the suns are our biggest competition as they can offer big PT behind hill. between us and the suns, we both offer good PT, we both offer a good chance of winning (though they are more favored to win it all). the difference being we are closer to home and will probably offer more money (the LLE rather than the minimum). imagine brooks and head out of the rotation for jackson and barry? great shooting and decision making!
It has been pointed out repeatedly in this thread that 1. Barry will be eligible to play in the playoff for any team. Only players waived after March.1st are not eligible. 2 Spurs can used their untapped MLE on Barry without worrying about LT. Whether they want to do that, that's another issue. I personally think Spurs are in the line ahead of us for Barry. The Barry family influnce on Brent will be minimum to non-existent. I even doubt Rick and Jon would give any career advice to Barry on this. Barry is an independent adult. If Spurs do make a offer to Barry, he will be a spur again, I think.
They can use their MLE, but that doesn't mean they don't have to worry about the LT. If they go over by using the MLE, they still have to pay it.
From Boston Herald... article link Barry on way? NBA sources said last night that the Celtics are poised to make a move on Brent Barry if and when he clears waivers. It is the second time the C’s have tried to get the slim shooter who has decent ballhandling skills. The first time failed when Barry ended up in San Antonio, which traded him this week to Seattle in the Kurt Thomas deal. The Celts, who have two roster spots available, will only be able to offer the veteran minimum. That may be enough to get Barry, who had interest in the C’s the last time the club looked at him.
Dude, Hoopsworld is about as reliable of a source as a 14 year old girl texting to her girlfriends...
I bet BB is not in a hurry to sign. He can wait until the best contract from PHX, HOU, DAL and even SAS coms.
Celtics join Brent Barry sweepstakes Saturday, Feb 23, 2008 6:59 am EST The Boston Celtics and several other teams are in the Brent Barry sweepstakes the Boston Globe reported. The Sonics waived the 13-year veteran combo-guard Thursday after acquiring him the same day in a trade from the Spurs. The 6-foot-7-inch, 210-pounder will become an unrestricted free agent Saturday and is expected to get interest from Boston, San Antonio, Phoenix, Denver, Houston, Golden State, and the Lakers. The Spurs, however, would have to wait 30 days before they are eligible re-sign Barry. Boston is expected to inquire about Barry. A calf injury, however, is expected to keep Brent Barry sidelined for about another 10 days. Not questioning Hoopsworld's integrity - just wanted to read the article for myself, and I have not seen it. Can you find it?
