If we get Barry and stay healthy we win the title Yao Scola Battier T-Mac Alston Jackson Barry Landry Hayes and Head are out of the rotation but could be used in cetain situations Green and Brooks are so young and could step into the rotation after next season when Jackson and Barry would be gone
http://www.star-telegram.com/287/story/492811.html If Mavs pursue Barry, they'll have company MINNEAPOLIS -- With two roster spots that need to be filled by Saturday, the Mavericks are in the hunt for a big man and a 3-point ace named Brent Barry. The Spurs traded Barry to Seattle for added inside muscle in Kurt Thomas and the Sonics cut him. In what could have been viewed as a Jerry Stackhouse-style deal, it made sense to believe the injured Barry would sit out the league-mandated 30 days and then re-sign with the Spurs. But that scenario's apparently not a slam dunk. So that's where things get intriguing. Barry can either return to San Antonio, the team he won two titles with and where his family lives, or spurn the Spurs by signing with one of their three key rivals: the Suns, Rockets or Mavs, all interested parties. When asked about Barry on Sunday, Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said: "We're interested." Houston, where Barry's analyst brother Jon finished his playing career, is seemingly putting on a full-court press. As for the Mavs, Dirk Nowitzki would only smile when asked if he's made a personal pitch to the 43-percent 3-point shooter and Jason Kidd said he'd welcome Barry. "I was going to call him and see where his mind-set is, but I haven't had a chance to call," Kidd said. "He makes the game easy. He would definitely help." That's what the Suns, Rockets and Spurs are thinking, too. As for the Mavs' seeking to bulk up their interior, Jamaal Magloire, released by the Nets on Friday, will become a free agent Tuesday evening if he clears the 48-hour waiver process. Forward Justin Williams, released by Sacramento, is also a possibility. Dale Davis is off the table. He re-joined his former team, the Pistons. "Like other teams, whether it's Boston or Phoenix or L.A. or whomever, we make the same calls to good players that they make," Mavs coach Avery Johnson said. "Everybody that we talked to is in the wait-and-see decision mode." Players must be added by Saturday to be eligible for the postseason roster.
Utah didn't give Head or Battier many clean looks, they sure as heck wouldn't give clean looks to Barry. Other good defensive teams like SA and Dallas are not going to give him looks either. And they would have killed Barry on the other end. Even SA--who are one of the teams that can most afford to have a 3 specialist on the floor because they are so good in offensive ball rotation/spacing and are about the best in the league in covering 1 player's defensive weakness--used Barry sparingly last year come playoff time. 12 minutes a game and he shot 30% from 3 land--they were giving nearly equal time for Jacque Vaughn for Pete's sake. Brent Barry would be a nice backup plan if Head faultered, but he isn't a better all around player than Head and doesn't look to be as good as Bobby Jackson either. Sure I'll take him as another option, but no, he wouldn't have a guaranted spot in the top 8 rotation.
He isn't driving by anyone. If he gets layups it is because nobody is around him. SA is pretty good at generating layups for their players. Further, 90% of his attempts are jump shots. On the whole Spurs roster that trails only Finley (93%) and is 1% more than Bowen (89%)--all three of which offensively are basically 1 trick ponies (spot up 3 shooters), but Barry brings by far the worst defense and athleticism of the 3. http://www.82games.com/0708/0708SAS.HTM
"Players must be added by Saturday to be eligible for the postseason roster" Does this mean that Barry couldn't play for the Spurs in the postseason since he has to wait 30 days before he could re-sign with them?
And the fact they turned to Vaughn for PG minutes (and traded for Damon S) instead of Barry reveals a lot. Much of the talk hear has been the idea he can outperform Alston, who is 10x the player Vaughn is. In terms of SG, we are pretty solid with Tmac, Head and B Jack sharing the load. Again, Barry is a great shooter with space and has good offensive BB IQ, but he can't guard anyone or get by anyone at this point in his career. (and he needs more space, than say, Eddie Johnson, another great jumpshooter even when old had a role despite similar limitation). There is a reason he has been on the trading block for years by a team who stresses defense and that defending champion was willing to let him go.
I hope the Rockets get him. That'd be the only way we'll find out who's right cause we're not going to agree otherwise
Although Barry CAN play the 1, he won't be asked to do that in Houston if signed. The Rockets have Jackson to backup Rafer. And if he's off, Brooks is next on the depth chart. If all else fails, Barry can run it. If he's lost it, Tmac can run it. Barry wont be playing the 1...the fact that he has experience bringing the ball up the court is a plus for him. He will be Luther Head, except in addition to knocking down 3's, he'll make the smart pass, smart play, and clean entry passes to Yao.
Yep, but I think he will ultimatly re-sign in San Antonio....or go to Phoenix, I think Houston is his 3rd choice.... DD
Finley, Ginobili, and Bowen ate Barry's time in SA last season. The two years before he was used a lot in playoffs including 10 starts with over a 40% 3pt FG%. Barry is also a little taller than Head making it easier to get off his shot under pressure. I think Head is a good player, but think Barry is still better at there primary weapon. Head has seemed to be much better this season around the rim, but his 3pt shot has been less consistent.
Dada: So the Spurs or Suns will pay him more money? If not, why he doesn't sign with us as long as our winning streak is still going? We are a good team right now.
Pack it up. Go home. Call it a season. No reason to risk injury when we are not even guaranteed to make the playoffs. Or we could be stupid and try to extend the 12 game winning streak.
My thinking is that he has made a lot of money, and his wife and family are in San Antonio already, and the fact that they can pay him more money and are at a place where he is already comfortable has to weigh heavily on his mind. Phoenix offers the best PG on the planet and a free flowing offense that fits his style. Houston - is a very good team close to home, who also has fantastic players. I think he stays in San Antonio.....but hey...he may want a more prominant role...and then Houston jumps up. DD
Love to have him, but me thinks he stays with the spurs...However, there is always hope and I think PHX would fit his style first..
I have a gut feeling he comes here, Rockets are making a serious run at him He will be in the rotation with Jackson and Landry and while the Spurs would seem like an easy choice they keep trying and now DID trade him I would stick it to them
I hope you are right, but I think on the Spurs forums he was at some Season ticket holders party just the other night. DD
