This confused the hell out of me, but then I just realized that there is another poster by the name of "CarlHerrera" ...
ESPN just reported Yao and Tmac called Barry. Of course, Shaq, Nash, Kidd, and Dirk all called him too.
If he wants to be in a pivotable role, Houston will give him that b/c of the double teaming of yao/t-mac.
I think a lot of people are missing an important element here. In my eyes, the only competition is the Spurs. Sure the Suns, Celtics, etc. can offer contention and PT. But I think the offerings stop there for those teams. The advantages the Rockets have to offer: -Contention for a title. -Legit playing time with the opportunity to contribute in a significant way. -Houston is very close to his home; great for his family. -Letter of reference from his brother, Jon. I think the fact that Houston can offer what the other teams offer PLUS it's close to San Antonio gives the Rockets an advantage. Of course, if he's already decided from the get-go that he's going back to San Antonio, then that advantage doesn't really matter.
I think that Brent Barry is a shooter who is also everything that Luther Head is not. While I like Luther, he is just not a complete enough player to get the job done at only 6-2. Brent is 6-7 and is capable of actually throwing the ball into the post from the strong side. Luther is terrible at that. Also, Barry is a capable ballhandler, which is a skill that Luther may never have. If the Rockets can sign Barry, the team will go from having only two capable ballhandlers who will actually play significant time in the playoffs (Rafer and T-Mac) to now four (Rafer, T-Mac, Jackson and Barry). The offense should run much more smoothly. Plus, Yao will greatly benefit from getting more quality touches in the post. Get it done, Daryl.
I agree with you. Better shooter, better handle, more size for better defense (although Barry is not a good defender, but he's still a better defender than Luther). I think our backup backcourt is him and BJax if we sign him. I would look for them to take both Luther and Aaron's minutes with Luther being the 3rd option behind them if we want to play microsmall ball.
I'm trying to look at this as objectively as possible and I still think Houston is the best place for him. With the combination of being close to home, being on a contender and having a very pivotal role (moreso than on the other mentioned squads), he at least has to strongly consider it. No other teams offer that combination.
Houston has done exactly what i think they should have done to have a shot at Barry, offer one more year in the contract so that he feels he is not a one year rental only, now to take the lead Houston will have to offer Barry playing time, i think he can have here as many as in PHX by subbing both T-Mac and Battier, and circumstantially Alston, but Morey must be clear about this with Barry or he might end up back with the Spurs.
The addition of shooting in any form makes this team very dangerous, that is why many of us wanted either of the Millers. Because of Brent's father's and brother's history with the Rockets, this seems like the perfect fit, but I have this feeling he is going to Dallas. I hope I am wrong. It is very likely that he is going to stay in Texas, so we got a one in three chance.
i don't believe that dallas has shown any interest. i know the rockets made an offer, and the C's have contacted his agent. besides that i believe that the suns and lakers said they were interested.
I don't believe it either, but during the Suns/Pistons game it was reported that Dirk and Kidd contacted Barry. Doesn't mean much considering everyone else contacted him, but this was the time I heard about it.
Alright I believe the "March 1 deadline to sign on a team in order to be on the playoff roster" rule that everyone is talking about is not the case. The rule is that if you are released after March 1st, you can't sign with a team and be on their playoff roster. Brent can still sign after the 1st and be on anyones playoff roster because he was released before the first. HTML: http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#54
Hopefully, Phoenix's blowout loss today can end Barry's interest in them. They're a team in flux, not one piece away from contending for a championship. We may not be contenders, but at least we've got a set gameplan where a guy like Barry would play a pivotal role. Adelman system rewards offensive creativity, where Barry shines. Unfortunately, I think he's going to the spurs.
Latest news: Daryl Morey has called Brent's favorite radio station and dedicated the following song to Brent: <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5V_rXTp1yBU&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5V_rXTp1yBU&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> Hope it works.
It certainly was a great time for a blowout. I think it helps us. BTW, Jon Barry said during tonight's first half, that Brent wanted to decide on Monday afternoon and make it public on Tuesday.
