Why would Carlisle keep it secret?

Wow, I didn't think the coaching search could actually get any worse. What's wrong with at least talking to the guy? What harm can possibly be done? Would it kill CD and Les to pick up the telephone and hold a conversation with the guy for even 5 minutes? Jesus, he might just surprise you.

Good lord, what else could go wrong? At this point, I can totally see Les going out and hiring Dick Vitale (high profile, right?) as our new coach (whose first move will be to promptly trade Yao for Jay Williams, straight-up.) H-Town, ba-by! With a capital H!!!

As much as he accomplished in Detroit, I don't think his brash style would fit with the Rockets organization. Everything I've read about Carlisle says he burns people up to get results. Les and CD will not allow that type of atmosphere in this organization.

Could not have said this better. Given the Rockets culture, Carlisle's attitude would not fit. I think it'd be a total disaster to hire him.

Why not just give him an interview? Why bother giving him an interview? If you know you don't want to hire him, why waste his time? Should they interview him just to make backseat GMs happy? They don't want him; don't waste the man's time.

Sane, it isn't $5 million a year; it is $5 million plus heavy incentives.

I think it's more than 25 mils counting incentives plus the fact that LB is close to picking up his social security checks, I think he wants the shortest route to the finals possible.

Supposedly, and all that has been brought to light, was that Carlisle alienated the front office. He refused to act like a public figure that an NBA coach is according to various reports. He hadnt had contact with the owner for months allegedly.

Also, apparently according to Billups quote and other quote about players exit interviews in another article, he grated on them.

I'm not knocking carlisle by any stretch, but he apparently didn't know when to pull in the reins and when to let them go.

How do you think his personality will work with Yao, who seems like a sensitive but hard working individual?

It might work early on, but in today's NBA you will not make it being a complete harda** like Riley was. Not with the way players run the asylum nowadays.

In a sense most coaches in the NBA are players coaches, simply out of necessity.

Look at the top teams in the league:

LA-Jackson is not a Riley type, hes a coach who gives his players freedom to make mistakes and learn from them while being a disciplinarian
    SAC-Adelman certainly isn't a disciplinarian
Dallas-Nelson(see Adelman, and think more hands off)
SA-Popovich is a disciplinarian but not like Riley is, not even close
NJ-Scott is a players coach who uses his NBA experience to relate to his team
POR-Cheeks is a combination of discipline and a players coach

    And the list goes on.

Really the only two or three true disciplinarians coaching in this years playoffs were Sloan(but hes not as bad as Riley), Carlisle, and if you want to include him, Brown.

And the only one with Riley type discipline appears to be Carlisle.

JVG isn't even that big of a discipline guy compared to carlisle. He is a riley deciphle but he stayed in New York for 5 or so years and got his team to play hard when he started to when he resigned.

Plus at that team, coaches still had some control over players, but now with all these early entries into the draft, and the huge endorsement deals, etc, strict disciplinarians like Carlisle will have short term success but at some point he better learn to relax his tactics or he will get tuned out by the team.

That is my one concern of JVG, btw.

As long as he realizes how to blend freedom/discipline within his coaching, then he is the man for his job.

And Mike Dunleavy is also a fine candidate. People wouldnt be bashing him near as much if his portland team had not choked in game 7 of LA's first title run.

But that team was poorly constructed with no leader and go to guy.

It never takes much even now, for the JailBlazers to implode.

And we don't have any really volatile personalities on this team from what I can see.

I like carlisle, I just think JVG/Dunleavy are better fits for us.

It isn't the gospel but are you telling me this is contrary to what is the general consensus around the league ?

If not, then what are you saying exactly?

We should have at least interviewed.

But why is everyone believing that Carlisle has this horrible attitude and that he can't get along with people. That's only one side to the story and no one seems to have heard Carlisle's. To me he's still innocent until proven otherwise. Even if the guy is a jerk, 50+ wins in the last 2 years and coach of the year last year is enough for me to say that this guy is a winner and that's the most important thing.

I can tell you for a FACT, that it is VERY contrary to what the general consensus around the league is:

    Collins and McMillan over Silas?

Nelson, Saunders and O'Brien over Rudy T?

Sloan over Rudy T? (Rudy accomplished more with one HOFer than Sloan did with two)

    Brown ahead of Riley?

Those are only the flaws I see with a quick glance.

That list is based on the author's opinion, not any type of consensus.

With Larry Brown gone, Rox should just wait until after the NBA Finals are over.

    Then interview ALL available coaches.

This is not the author's opinion but a consensus among the ESPN staff whom I would assume includes David Aldridge and Jack Ramsay both of whom have ties to NBA personnel.

Also, this was done at the beginning of last season. I can't imagine Rick Carlisle dropping below where he was ranked considering they accomplished more this year than last year reaching the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.

The key is where Brown and Carlisle are ranked. There is a general consensus that both coaches are among the Top 5 or 6 in the league.

Are you saying had Dunleavy been coaching, he wouldve been ranked higher than those 2 or even higher than Rudy T.?

If you were to fire Rudy T., you would assume you'd hire someone at least if not better. I fail to see how Dunleavy fits that bill.

Dunleavy was so awesome that he had to fire himself when he was the GM at Milwaukee (oops, I mean resign  ).

The Bucks replaced Dunleavy with Chris Ford (considered a terrible coach) and ended up exactly where Dunleavy left them - nowhere.

Actually, Larry Brown is making over 7 million per year. I think that Jeff Van Gundy would be perfect for this team. I don't understand why the Rockets won't interview Rick Carlisle, but if the things they are saying is true, then he won't fit here. It might be one side of the story, but Carlisle sure hasn't gone out of his way to clear his name, and that isn't helping matters. I'm not big on Mike Dunleavy, I'd rather have Van Gundy coaching. The weird thing is that all through the year while Van Gundy was calling games you had a bunch of people talking about how great a coach Van Gundy was, how smart he was, and how they'd rather have him then Rudy. Now he's available and most people don't want him. Go figure.

First of all genius, you do realize that you posted an article that is 9 months old? That means the consensus around the league changes from year to year. At least post up to date information. ;)

Second, it is an opinion. It is the opinion of ESPN staffers, whether they have NBA experience or not. Nowhere in that ranking system does it say that they based their opinions after talking to owners or management.

To say this list is a consensus of NBA owners and management is ridiculous.

I am not going to speculate where Dunleavy would be ranked. My guess would be anywhere from 10-15.

I dont have a problem with where Brown or Carlisle or ranked. Actually, I do have a problem with their rankings, however, I only feel they are off by 1 or 2 spots at the most.

However, the whole list is flawed. Saunders, who hasn't made it out of the 1st round in his career, over Rudy T, a two time NBA champion?

I find it hard to believe that the consensus around the league is that Saunders is a better coach than Rudy or that Collins and McMillan are favored over Silas.

PS - I noticed the rolleyes at the end of your post. I don't understand why you are bitter that I corrected you on some erroneous information that you posted in another thread (you said Dunleavy was fired 3 times when it was only actually 1 time).

I didn't realize you were going to hold a grudge. ;)

Just because a guy was fired from one position doesn't mean he wouldn't be good in another. Don Nelson was fired from Golden State and didn't even survive the entire season in New York and now he is a top coach. Doug Collins was fired from Chicago and but went to Detroit and won 50 games there. It depends on the situation.

"This is not the author's opinion but a consensus among the ESPN staff"

You can say that he "resigned" just like Rudy "resigned".

"Dunleavy's departure leaves Bucks searching for answers (NBA)

The Milwaukee Bucks are in search of new leadership after the resignation of Mike Dunleavy as vice president of basketball operations and general manager of the Milwaukee Bucks. Dunleavy announced his resignation Saturday, as the Bucks missed the playoffs for the sixth straight season. Dunleavy was fired as head coach a year ago. Dunleavy was under an eight-year contract that was to take him through the 1999-2000 season, but he called it quits because he was unable to turn the club into playoff material. "I am sorry that I did not get to accomplish what I and the organization wanted to -- get back into the playoffs," Dunleavy said."

The whole point is, that list is out of date. Those rankings would be completely different if that poll was run today. Not sure why you don't see a problem posting a poll that is 9 months old regardless of how Carlisle is ranked.

A consensus of a media outlet's staff does not equal a consensus of NBA coaches/management. Again, I don't understand how you can't dicipher the two.

Just like Brown "resigned" from the Pacers. ;)

According to the Houston Chronicle and the Bucks website on NBA.com, Dunleavy stepped aside/stepped down/resigned. Seeing as how Dunleavy had an agreement to stay on as VP of the franchise, I highly doubt it was announced as a firing.

Perhaps that article you posted has the situation incorrect (wouldn't suprise me).
