Former 6th man of the year and perfect backup center Montrezl Harrell is available for cheap as a free agent and would be a perfect backup for us. He’s only 28 years old and can play backup PF and C. As much as I love Bruno…..Harrell is basically a better version of him and would be the better long-term signing. He’s cheap due to a legal issue surrounding Marijana, which is now legalized in many states. Would be nice for him to return to where it all started!!!
I love Harrell, but he's going to take away minutes from young guys like Garuba and possibly Eason. And he helps you win games in a year where winning a few extra games shouldn't be the priority; youth development should be. If this were a year from now and we had the young core locked down with no reason to tank in the 2023-24 season, I would feel differently. At that point, you need some vets to help you win games. But signing Harrell for 25+ minutes a night right now just feels like they'd be jumping the gun.
Hard pass Useless player. All he ever had to do was develop a 3pt shot or learn to player defense and he did neither. The modern Kenneth Faried, I think he'll have the same fate of fading into obscurity and he'll blame others for it. No one cares about the weed he got busted with, it's just the stupidity to be driving around with it is a microcosm of his basketball career. Just think about the big picture for a second.
nice metaphor, bear in mind as well that 3 pt shot is the new postup game....its not nearly as efficient and suitable for everybody as is it fashionable...
I’d lock him up now (no pun intended) and enjoy the benefits he would bring to this team next year. Garuba needs to be cut or sent to the G-League as he is horribly out of shape….which is something you never have to worry about with Harrell.
I like Harrell, but I don't like him so much that I don't think a player of similar value will be available a year from now. He's a good player, but he's hardly a star the Rockets should feel pressure to move on now, especially now that he's got legal troubles. Also, whether Garuba is a bust or not, he needs to be given a chance to prove himself. And him losing you games right now is more valuable to the rebuild than Harrell winning you a few games is. The Rockets are not done adding young talent for the rebuild; signing veterans should not be the priority.
We need to wait and see what we have before committing to other players. Signing other players take away developmental time from the youth. With a move like this Eason may not see the court this season at all. Our answer is probably already here.
Who else are you going to be able to sign, have his salary count against the cap, and then file an insurance claim or worse yet, not pay when he can't meet the terms of his deal? Cap savings in a bottle right here..... ...just kidding by the way, would never advocate for Montrez on this roster but it's funny to think about Tillman signing someone solely because they can't meet the terms of their deal.
