Because I'm a fan (root word: fanatic) of the Houston Rockets. I don't care if he coaches in the NBA. I don't want him as a coach of my team, the Houston Rockets. We go from Rudy and Dream/Yao and Scola to McHale and Sampson?

    Ugh.

I never knew Thibodeau was actually given the title of defensive coordinator Also, if you think being #2 in the league is good then Boston was still pretty good on defense without Thibodeau and Perkins....but that's beside the point.

Also, I didn't know 2002 coach of the year Carlisle was only hired as an offensive coordinator in Indiana. He has always had pretty good defenses and he was even able to turn Dallas into the #7 defensive eff. team in the league with relatively weak defensive talent. Not to say Harter wasn't regarded highly for his defensive prowess, but it's silly to call Carlisle just an OC.

Anyhow...I am curious how this will work out. It doesn't seem like McHale has that pompous need to be right and in total control all the time. So he seems like the right guy to execute this concept.

Rockets reveal what the gameplan was all along.... bringing in Kevin with Sampson, Finch, and Little Bickerstaff.
Getting Sampson signed, sealed and delivered like this is a statement.
Morey and co. taking care of business...

It's just a matter of time (and staying healthy).....

Again, I absolutely agree with you that some things that help your offense, hurt your defense.
However, I disagree that a read and react offense excludes a team from being good defensively. Case in point, some of Rick Adelman's teams were good defensive teams.

Also, believe it or not the Rockets were 2nd in Turnover Ratio last year. Chicago was 17th. Yet the Bulls were 1st in DEF EFF and the Rockets 18th.
Leaking out, like Martin so often likes to do tends to hurt your defense, because it generally weakens your defense rebounding, which was one of the bigger problems the Rockets had. Obviously there are other factors (i.e personnel), but there's a major correlation between DEF REB and DEF EFF.

Another thing the Rockets need to improve is transition defense, like you rightfully eluded to. I do believe that offensive spacing plays a rather significant role in how effective your transition defense can be, however I don't have the numbers to back that up (Though it's common sense, really).
Does a motion offense make it harder to play good transition d? I think so, yeah, but I believe there's always a way to get it done and again I'd point to some of Adelman's teams that ranked top-5 in defensive efficiency.
I think I'd be foolish for us to believe that the Rockets, of all organizations have not looked into this matter.

sampson is an even greater higher than joerger would've been. just as good of a defensive coordinator, but he brings higher level experience than joerger has as a motivator and head coach. with mchale motivating the players, sampson on defense, and finch running adelman's offense, this could be a very effective staff.

Yeah, I get the point. And yeah, we agree. Just to clarify, I didn't really say a read n react excludes a team from being good defensively; I think I said Adelman's offensive is mutually exclusive from Thibodeau's/JVG's defense. That's a slightly different point. Don't think you're going to bring in a guy who wants complete control of the offense or defense, as they do in football. The offense and defense have to be designed together. You can't really pick anything you want on both sides of O and D and expect them to work together.

Then again, if you have the talent the Bulls did with Jordan....anything is possible.

Looks like the Rockets have acquired their young talent for the summer.;)

All kidding aside, it will be funny when the Adelman-less Rockets win more games than last season’s team.

"Is this it, no more staff? Will there be more?"

Because you want more, and you can't have it! For some reason your post made me laugh out loud.

    It's like:

"Is this it, no more Star Wars?"
"Is this it, no more Charles Barkley?"
"Is this it, no more SI Swimsuit Issue?"

    ...will there be more?

oh, and the obligatory, "Is this it, no more Yao Ming? Will there be more"

Sounds a lot like Coach Sampson's Sooner teams. I always thought of him as the JVG of college bball.

And don't forget that to this potent coaching lineup Morey has also assembled a nice collection of 2009 NBA draft busts as well. My heart is swelling with anticipation...

Probably it. Average team has about 3-4 assistant coaches.

Why is the whole coordinator thing such a shock for everyone? EVERY team assigns assistant coaches a role.

I thought it was pretty clear that Elston Turner was the "defensive coordinator" last year.
