a stat I like in baseball that some people will scoff at is win shares. i'm sure if they could calculate that for Yao and JJ then Yao is obviously worth more wins on this team. but again the debate is what your definition of "value" is. i think some people are being a little bit unfairly critical of yao. and here the term "value" is being interpreting and "fulfillment of expectations." although that still doesn't explain the 26 votes for steve.
I agree I don't get it why fans voeted for most consistent player instead of most valuable player despite the thread title says MVP.
Just because people are saying JJ was the most valuable player this season doesn't mean no one wants Yao anymore...your logic is terrible! Yao is still a valuable part of this team. and a vote for JJ is not a bash for Yao...damn some people! Everyone here would also agree that the Rockets are nowhere without Yao if Yao continues to improve as anticipated he should be the team MVP for the next 50 seasons
Please read carefully. I didn't say nobody wants Yao. I said the people voted for JJ would keep JJ if one of the two has to go. You always keep the most valuable player first. Can you tell me what's wrong with that logic?
JJ has made the most contributions, per capita, to the benefit of this team than any other player. Both SF3 and YM are instrumental parts of our team, but Jackson for what he was asked to do, Jackson played way above his level and what was expected of him. Mr. Hustle, Mr. Consitency, Mr. Veteran.. whatever you want to call it, he made the most of every play it seemed.
The question was "Who do you feel is the MVP of the rockets season?" It wasn't "Who would you rather keep? a 31 year old shooting guard or a 7'6 23 year old center who hasn't hit his prime yet" Not hard to tell a difference
So tell me this: If Yao will keep playing like he is for the rest of career, JJ will keep playing like this for the rest of his career and he is 9 year younger, who will you keep between the 2?
Great. That's my point, you keep the player with more value. In this case, you kept Yao, that means deep in your heart Yao is more valuable than JJ. MVP=most valuable player, you would have kept JJ if JJ is really MVP.
i had to go with JJ. the journeyman has brought some great experience to this team and even a bit of much-needed leadership. oh, yeah: and a pretty nice shot too...
Well I would go with Yao because his play (good or bad) had a much stronger correlation with whether the Rox won or not. In Houston wins Yao is: 19.4 ppg 9.8 rpg 2.18 bpg 1.8 apg and in losses, Yao is: 15.1 ppg 8 rpg 1.57 bpg 1.1 apg It's pretty obvious that Yao plays better in games that the Rockets win. And you can indirectly infer that when Yao plays well the Rockets win. Now take a look at JJ in wins: 12.8 ppg 6.0 rpg 2.7 apg and losses: 13.0 ppg 6.2 rpg 2.9 apg They are pretty close. Which is great because he shows up every night and gives you the same kind of results. He really is the "glue" and he was definitely important to the team. But I say that Yao would still be the MVP because his play is such a huge factor in whether the Rox wins or not. One last comment. The rox were 2-0 without JJ in the lineup. Now I'm not saying that we would have been undefeated if only that JJ bum didn't drag us down, but I am saying that the rox were able to plug someone in and win the games that he missed. Would the same thing be said for Yao (who didn't miss a game)? You can't be sure, but I believe it would have been more of a struggle without the big fella. Btw, both Steve and Cat played much better in wins than losses, but I'll leave it to someone else that wants to make cases for them to go into those details. Then again, maybe this would hurt my "Yao's play directly correlates to Rockets wins" argument. Ehh, whatever. Like Linda Richman always says, "Discuss"
I think the question in the poll is really just regarding who was the most important for the 2004 season as it is stated...how are we just deviating from that...into who is going to be good down the line for us? Even morons can figure that one out
I think if you take a look past statistics you can see why so many would say JJ. Just the intangebiles of being a leader to Steve and others becuase he does have experience and he has hit a lot of shots that have been meaningful in the season. JJ has really been the most consitant player for us when we needed him to be. So that's why i give him a slight edge in this one.
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/2502242 I think without JJ we easily miss the playoffs...you could say the same for Steve and Yao....but that just shows how valuable JJ's presence is as his presence goes beyond stats.
Actually I agree with choujie's logic here. There is no way the MVP of rockets is someone other than SF or Yao. One of SF, Yao or JJ is going to miss the game 5 of this series, who would u pick? It's w/o any doubt JJ. But somehow I voted for JJ as well. It's all about expectation. Yao and SF both have a disappointing season. JJ is certainly exceeding our expectation and we fans just want to acknowledge his effort here by this poll. But to be honest, MVP should either be SF or Yao.
