I said 30-32 so I wouldnt get flamed for saying 30 flat, lol. I think during the season, he should play 72 games and avg 30 minutes. What's the point of having him if he cant make it through the playoffs, ya know? To keep him at 30mpg and out of back to backs, we will need someone <cough> camby <cough> good enough to play with him out. LS isnt big enough to play center for Yao being out that much.
Obviously it will be 2 different teams. When Yao goes out, the whole game changes for us. If we are going to get someone that costs more money than we would like to spend, get someone who can play the 4 while Yao is in.
Definitely not straight up. It would depend on the package, and what other deals we have lined up. I don't want the Rockets to over-extend themselves acquiring a center, since there are not that many good one's to begin with. I don't think we would have to give up to much to acquire someone that meets my criteria of a solid backup center that we could live with as a starter filling in for games that Yao may miss during the regular season.
Not alot of players can play along Yao. you have to be able to hit a midrange jumper, and do all the dirty work and rebounding. whoever we get as backup C is likely to only get 10 mins a game at the most. in other words, everyone should lower their expectations who our backup C winds up to be. he'll most likely be a role playing journeyman.
Camby can hit midrange jumpers, get boards, and block shots, all while playing PF. I think we have 2 kind of people on this subject, those who are gambling on Yao staying healthy the whole season, and those who are a little more pessimistic. I don't think he can complete a whole season anymore without reducing his minutes and games during the regular season. If/when Yao goes down, we need someone who can play starting center for 30 minutes.
You know who would look great along side yao....chris Bosh.....but realistically you woud think there might be a chance to get a guy like Hakim Warrick or Tyrus Thomas either of them would bring some nice length to the front court.
Well we can forget about Sheed. He just told David Alridge he's choosing between the Spurs or the Magic.
If Yao goes down, we're not championship contenders no matter who we have as backup. Shaq's backup on the lakers was Samaki Walker. His backup his first year in Miami was Michael Doleac. Miami was fortunate enough to get Alonzo off the bench, but we all know why he went there. We were fortunate enough to have Dikembe for five years. Stars have to be healthy, period. If the best backup center we can get is Scola then so be it. We aren't getting Pryzbilla, Marc Gasol, or Ilgauskas for free.
Duh. Still missing the point. Without a backup that the Rockets feel comfortable giving extended minutes to, Yao is as good as injured anyway because he'll be force to play extended minutes in the regular season. I don't believe anyone in this thread has said we want a backup so that if Yao goes down we still have a chance.
Rockets need save a full MLE to get a backup center for Yao. Other positions can be exchangeable because we have the deep, but not the center position after Deke was gone.
wow hmm if i was sheed I would go Orlando he would get more minutes there being the primary PF off the bench and gets to do what he loves best, shoot 3s and there is an easier path in the playoffs SA he would probably compete with Gooden for minutes at PF though he could possibly play center there too. But I would expect Pop would want to use Wallace more in the paint where Wallace could make and living and kill people but doesnt want to
We can usually get away with Chuck playing the back-up center. The only times we can't get away with it is against tall/long teams like the Lakers and Blazers. If we plan to get to the NBA Finals, we'd better get a correctly-sized back-up for Yao, I agree. Camby is too expensive for a back-up role, however. If we get Camby, we will have to give up too much to the Clippers for simply a back-up player. I can't see Morey (or anyone) thinking this is a good idea. Gortat is another player on the radar, but I imagine he wants to stay in Orlando and will probably get a pretty good contract. Oberto is intriguing, however. I think he'd be a pretty serviceable back-up, and he should be pretty cheap because if he gets released, someone else will basically be paying him in addition to us.
Eh, I see where the confusion is coming in...I didn't word it well. When I say "live with as a starting center" I meant for portions of the season where Yao may be out or is being rested. I don't understand why some people seem to be against this. The Rockets have been constantly going to Mutombo to fill this obvious need for the past several seasons. Now Mutombo is out for good and we need someone to take his place. Capiche? Didn't realize this was so debatable.
