jeff.. did they mention what players were going to be there..? at gallery ------------------ Shane "Save Our Rockets" "Life without basketball in Houston........without an arena that is what it will be"
They didn't say. As for 3's, CD spoke at length about athletic players that can play multiple positions but he constantly went back to "he's really a 3" quote about everyone. The Rockets like Rodney White who they consider a 3. They think Rad and Gasol are both 3's. They've talked about Joe Johnson and his skill at the 3. I think there is a pattern emerging. I've read a few places and heard around that most believe the best big men will be gone by the 9th or 10th pick in the draft, but the draft is loaded with 3's. The Rockets (both Rudy and CD) have said their target is an athletic player who can play multiple positions and that they really have a hole to fill at the 3 spot. They've been pretty consistent since the end of the season. They were really disappointed that all the 3's they wanted last year were gone when they were ready to pick. This year looks more promising for that position. ------------------ Things do not change; we change. - Henry David Thoreau
There are two different ways to look at last yr's draft and this yr's. Last yr's sucked and pretty much only the SF position was deep...Miles, Miller, DeMarr ahead of us Turkoglu and MoPete SF? after us. Aside from possibly the top 2 picks, the only quality was SFs. Of course the Rockets would be disappointed in not getting Miles or Miller last year. Looks like they were right on the money in their scouting. This year there is more PF/Cs than usual, as well as a couple higher quality SFs than last yr. So what do you do? Look at it and say that even bad drafts can produce starter quality SFs (what is the hurry) lets stock the frontline when we can. Or do you say, boy there sure are some starter-ready swingmen in this draft, I want one of them. It is going to be close, Crisco. [This message has been edited by heypartner (edited June 15, 2001).]
HP, problem is tho, the Rockets did not consider Mo Pete and Alexander to be SFs. It seems they want a player that is 6-8 and up and fits the system. If Mo Pete had been a few inches taller, they may have given him a more serious look. I remember reading somewhere that they felt Mo Pete was too small to play the SF position. Also, Courtney Alexander is a SG in the truest sense. 6-5 player that is very good off the dribble and loves to pull up and score repeatedly from mid range and is very explosive going to the basket. ------------------ Check out the Best Source for Draft Info Draftsource.net [This message has been edited by MManal (edited June 15, 2001).]
If I were the Rockets, I would have been disapointed in not getting Turkoglu. Granted they'll probably be able to find a player of equal talent in this draft, but I absolutely love his game. He's the point forward type this team needs. That 3rd player to start the break, which Shandon was not. ------------------ "Modern bourgeois society with its relations of production, of exchange and property, a society that has conjured up such gigantic means of production and of exchange, is like the sorceror, who is no longer able to control the powers of the nether world whom he has called up by his spells."
MManal, I had already corrected my Alexander thing. Still, that draft looks like the only long time starters that we possibly could have traded up for were swingmen. This draft is not like that. Sure these swingmen are likely better than Miller (Miles maybe not), but this draft has possibly more big men than 1997.

HP, ya I posted just before you erased the Alexander thing, disregard that in my post. Should be interesting to see what happens. I dont think the Rockets are averse to taking one of the top big men ie Eddy Curry or Kwame Brown, but its a long shot for them to get that high. I think the realistic trade up goal is around 7 or 8 which is an ideal spot to land a player like Joe Johnson. I dont think they'll go for a total and complete project like Tyson Chandler who they have to put in the weight room for a couple of yrs. ------------------ Check out the Best Source for Draft Info Draftsource.net
I guess my point is that it is probably going to be expensive (if at all possible) to move up beyond Boston, and if Orl really is willing to package Miller and their pick for a #7 or 8, we have some major trade-up competition. Trading up could be pretty darn expensive for us. All three picks just for Joe Johnson?? Maybe maybe no. At #13, it is looking like those SF starters are pushing down some of those PFs into easy pickens, and I still pick Ken J at 18. This league is being flooded with SFs. I'd wait unless we indeed got our man. btw Achebe: I don't care what anyone says, Rodney White is a PF!! phfft!
heyp, I know... I know... IMO, Carroll saying that Rodney is a '3' sounds like sweet talk targeted towards Mo Taylor.... Then again, I did read somewhere that Rodney White is a Tracy McGrady w/ muscle... if that reading was legit . Also, if CD actually expects to play him at the 3, hopefully Rodney's closer to 230 than 240. ------------------ When this guy started smoking 40 years ago, people had no idea it was bad for you. Rodney White is a small forward who could match up with 4's if need be. ------------------ "Modern bourgeois society with its relations of production, of exchange and property, a society that has conjured up such gigantic means of production and of exchange, is like the sorceror, who is no longer able to control the powers of the nether world whom he has called up by his spells."

Achebe, I think I read somewhere that White is long (6'9")like TMac, but carrying about 25 lbs more muscle. Don't remember the site. He's had some impressive folks speak very highly of him recently. He's supposed to go somewhere between 7-9, but who knows in this draft. More than any recent draft, I think the order will be dependent upon which team is doing the choosing. Usually, there is a lot more consensus than in this year, or so it seems. ------------------
The Rockets are a young team who need immediate help but I would still get Radman or Gasol if we are lucky to get any of them even if they have to play in Europe for another year, because both of them might become very good players in the NBA in the future.I think even if they don't pan out they still will be tradable for good role players. ------------------
