Why? He didn't pay the luxury tax.

The issue isn't the luxury tax, it is the repeater tax.

I am not quite sure why everyone is surprised.

We have known since July that the Rockets were not going to pay the repeater tax. That meant that once in the next couple years the Rockets would need to be under the luxury tax. It makes the most sense to get under this season, as it will allow us to be above the luxury tax next year and the year after.

The reality is that this year is the easiest to get under the tax. I would understand if we lost out on a really good player, but we didn't. The Rockets tried to get Butler and Davis and it didn't happen. So far the loses have been fairly painless.

If people want to get mad that Tillman won't just pay the repeater, I get that, but consider that almost no one has agreed to pay it because it is so severe. The Warriors have said they will pay it, and it will be $90,000,000 at the end of this year and $220,000,000 the year after. Very few franchises will pay a tax of $310,000,000 over 24 months just for going over the luxury tax line.

It's amazing because the projections were pretty clear that it would be tough to get under the tax threshold this year. IT's interesting how things have changed so much.

the theme of this entire season has been to shed salary. tilman and morey have wasted an epic season by harden.

Dumping Ennis provides no flexibility. It does give the team that just blew out the Rockets another rotation player while the Rockets lose one.

Okay, I am sorry I thought you were complaining that they were trying to get under the LT this season.

I do not like it either, but the more digging I did on the repeater tax and the history around it, the more I understand why the Rockets are avoiding it.

FWIW I was told that the Rockets would pay the Repeater Tax if it was for a star player like Jimmy Butler but they will not for role player types.

I think under the circumstances Morey has done about the best to be expected.

I'm fine with it... Get under the tax line this year when it's conceivable to do so, instead of having to make some drastic moves 3 years from in order to avoid the repeater tax.

Now that MCW, Knight and Ennis are gone, we no longer have anyone on the roster who frustrates me. I'm good :)

Les tried to avoid the luxury tax too. We have some shitty owners, and they charge 100 bucks for upper level 1st round playoff tickets.

There goes Stauskas and Baldwin as predicted. We are now tantalizingly close to the tax line (may even be under it for the moment assuming the Capela bonuses are missed.)

    Nene is on watch...

So if we trade Nene we could be looking at getting three players from the buyout market?

Exactly. Not sure why people don't understand this. Morey and Tilman needed to clean things up to move forward in future years. The repeater tax is a killer.
