The Rockets are locked in to Houston for 30 years but Yao is not. He could easily choose to sign elsewhere in a couple of years. Hopefully he won't but if he does then I wonder how most of you will feel about the blatant Asian marketing tactics. I guess we'd need to change unis again.
Uh, who cares? If the Rockets are locked into Houston, who cares? Do you honestly believe the Rockets are shunning their non-asian fans? And from what I have read and heard, people actually like the jerseys even if you think they're kimonos. Thats right! "People" not just asian people, but people of all colors! Whats next for the NBA marketing machine? Marketing to kids? NO WAY! Stuart
Hey Mooch, did you get a load of this? Apparently my analysis way back........of Tuesday being the perfect day to hold the unveiling was apparently CORRECT!?! So therefore, I WIN our little "Guess The Unveiling Date" game! and the crowd goes WILD!........
I can guarantee you if they wore this uniform, the opposing team shooting percentage would drop to under 30%.
If the Rockets adobted this look I think they would have to hire Enis Cabel, Terry Puhl or someone like that to play with Yao.
Dude, shut the f..k up, im sick of this crap. I think everyone is taking the roll of a fan a little bit too far. Show us what your idea of a new jersey/logo would be. I guess you were expecting to see more smily faces with your little Rocket. Really, it is time for all of you to quit your b****in! Yes, we may have minor probems with the new look, I would suggest placing a suggestion in the link below if you want your voice heard b/c Tim will definitely take a look at it . . http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64971 Otherwise, please look forward!
Actually the jerseys are a vast improvement over the last unis (I can't wait to get an authentic sz 56 Franchise). When did I say otherwise? My point was that the unis do have a stereotypical Asian look to them and that's probably because of Yao. If the Rocket org had decided to go this direction once Yao had been locked up (max year contract) I'd feel somewhat differently. The Rocks seem to act like this guy is gonna be around here forever when he could go elsewhere sooner than we'd like to believe. BTW - I'm a grown man voicing my opinion in an open forum. I truly don't appreciate being told to shut the f*ck up and/or being called a dumbass. If you wouldn't say it face2face then don't say it hiding behind a keyboard. Eh, I guess it's pretty easy being an internet tough guy though.
This reminds me of ridiculous day at the deli, when prices were so low they were ridiculous. By the way, that is one of the worst posts I have ever read.

Ah, gotta love it when the fur flys. Our team's name is the Rockets. Rockets have points on them. All of them. At least the ones us dumb marketing students have seen, when we weren't too busy doing coloring books and watching Teletubbies. Slants instead of squared edges imply motion. So do way the arcs are shaped. Implying upward motion was one of the design principles. Last I checked, upward motion had more to do with basketball and more to do with rockets than with China. And the red color has to do with the Rockets history. It's also nice that people feel it fits with the Rockets name. If people in China love it, great. But it was designed for our fans, here, in Houston. (And before anybody says it, I hear you about "Houston" on the jersey. I'm paying attention.) And in case st00pid marketing concepts like fan demographics are beneath anyone -- a significant chunk of our fan base in Houston does happen to be Asian. A number of them emigrated from mainland China. Us dumb marketing guys, we're sneaky about that. We actually go out and talk to our fans. We learn a few things. So ... we'll have over 20 different hats. 11% of our fans in the building last year were Asian, the majority of whom either emigrated from China or whose family descended from China. So we have one hat of 20 that's tailored for them. Hmmm ... creating products ... tailored specifically to your audience .... last I checked, that's what marketing is about. Did I miss something? (By the way, we do expect that hat to be one of our best sellers, and I'd put down money that the majority of buyers will be non-Asian. Just looks good.) Heh. This is fun. Tim
Tim, love your posts. Just an idea...have you and Clutch ever brainstormed how the Rockets and Clutchcity.net could work even more closely together? I mean, a die-hard fan base like the one you have here, with people like Clutch and Jeff, is an asset that you are surely aware of. I bet there are other teams which would wish they had the same kind of spirit that Clutch (and Jeff) have displayed over the years by keeping this community alive and together. I do not have any concrete ideas and if I did, it would not be my call to even name them, but my gut feeling (especially from the statements I have read from Clutch in this thread) is that, with someone like you at the top of the Rockets' marketing who is listening to the fans, that there is still some potential to be exploited. As with every post of mine, just my two cents .
We've talked about it. We're not sure exactly how it would work, yet, but we've talked about it and probably will continue to talk about it. Clutch has a vision for what he wants this site to be, though, and one thing we wouldn't want to do is interfere with that. This needs to remain a pure, fan-driven site. Tim
Hey Tim- Are you hiring in any capacity (preferably not custodial) in the near future with people with little or no work experience. Actually what I really want to know is are there any college-type internships you guys (I know the NBDL does) offer over the summer? I'll pour your coffee for you everyday if I have to, just the way you like it (regular or decaf?).
Wow. Tim with teh pwnage. Nicely said. Personally, though, I think you should have added a "OMG! n00b suxxor LOL!!!!111" line to your smackdown to really drive your points home with the internet crowd. BTW, did you have anything to do with last year's "Be Part of Something Big" Topps promotional cards? I've got a set on my desk, and they look pretty nice. Are you guys planning on distributing any other promotional card sets this year?
