Oh, whoopty doo, big surprise. The Rockets are incorporating Chinese into apparel now. Wait, haven't we seen that before? Oh yeah, the logo. And the jerseys. And where do the Rockets play? Yeah, the Toyota Center. Why don't you just go ahead and change the Rockets name to the Fighting Kung Pao. The measures that the Rockets are taking to attract Asian interest are quite annoying. They're not even warranted, either. Merchandise is appealing to Chinese/Asians because it IS American. Adding a couple of Chinese letters or an Asian influenced design doesn't add to the fact that an item is American. That's where the appeal is drawn. I don't suppose the 76ers are going to change their logo to a glock and have their name written in graffiti on their jerseys to appease Allen Iverson fans. Sorry Tim, I respect your insight, but the marketing department for the Rockets is ****. I had always heard that the dumbest business students go into marketing. Now I truly believe that.

    Can you get ESPNews there?

They've televised unveilings like this before.

That way, it wouldn't look so pointless to all of the local fans who have already seen the new jerseys.

I'm sure they have ESPN in China. :D

Actually, jiggaj, the dumbest ones are the ones who think that Toyota has something to do with China. D'OH!!!

I posted this uni design idea on another thread, but I wanted to make sure Tim got a look at it:

Now that, my friends, is a classic, subtle look.

    Toyota= Japanese
And I guess you haven't seen the New Era Chinese character baseball caps.

Plus the L wouldn't approve of the Fighting Kung Paos. The Flying Lo Meins, they're still looking into it...

This is just a terrible and unitelligent statement. Who are you to question the marketing strategy of the Rockets. We have pretty much the best player to ever come out of China on our team and he is going to be great... SO we should completely Americanize him? Isnt he the premire player other than Steve on this team? Why shouldnt the rockets appease and make some apprarel for his fans? Its not like the shooting shirts or t shirts or un-readable and in Chinese... are they? they Say ohh what do you know.. they say ROCKETS on them...
I am not even an Asian American or an Asian.... I am a Latino.. but I know politically incorrect statements when I see them. and the 76ers statement is ludicrous... thats just plain wrong... perhaps you should become more comfortable with your own culture before you make comments like this in the future.

Tim, I love the uniforms... to be honest I hated the Logo when it came out... Untill I saw it on shirts and other merchandise.. I then noticed how powerful the Logo is... I would have liked maybe a little more too it.. but I think it works.... Especially on the court...
Your marketing strategy has been well thought out... Flawed to some extent.. but well thought out... we can see you put A LOT of work this summer.....I hope you get a big bonus....I would like to see a 3rd jersey with Houston... take this as my lobbying effort.

As for the marketing statement...They are not the dumbest business students.... they are the students who care more about the people they are marketing for.. in Tim's case the Rocket fans...
they dont sell out and become snobs..

I am done ranting... Good work tim GO ROCKETS!!!

Obviously, I know that Toyota is Japanese. The only cars made in China say Tonka on them. I was speaking to the idea of Asian influence on the team. I think either all of you misunderstood the point behind my post, or all of you are marketing majors. My frustration far exceeds a couple of Chinese letters on a hat. If you look at the Rockets new logo or at the lettering on the new jerseys, it is clear that the target audience doesn't live inside or outside the loop, or anywhere near it. Yes, you may point out that the artist, Ishioka, is Japanese, but that is irrelevant. The letters are all cut off at the end with a slant, a common characteristic of many Chinese symbols. Are the Rockets so focused on one of their players and his audience that they would gamble their integrity to please that audience? You no doubt have already seen the uproar to Houston being left off of the road jerseys. Now consider that combined with my "Asian influence theory." It's quite obvious that the Rockets organization is taking local fans for granted. They are treating us as if we will support the team no matter what and are therefore not worthy of their time or treasure. So you, if you're local fan with any dignity, should not be okay with that. The Rockets are attempting to represent a player and nation instead of a team and a city. Am I the only one who has a problem with that?

The logo and the jerseys incorporate Chinese? Oh, really? How, may I ask, is it you've arrived at this conclusion? I don't think so, jiggaj. If a rocket silhouette and vapor trails look Chinese to you, I think you are basing your opinion on the sole fact that the designer is of Asian descent. Lets talk about the jerseys...what makes them "incorporate Chinese" to you? The swoopes? The cut of the jersey? The color? The font? If you say the font....then I'll tell you my thoughts on it. Again, as you know, the "R" has that pointy look because it's supposed to be the nose cone of a rocket. The designer carried that pointy characteristic throughout the rest of the letters to achieve a balanced effect of continuity and uniformity. Just imagine that rocket-silhouetted "R" with standard, cookie-cutter fonts after it. It would look shoddy as hell. I think the Rocket's intentions were to create a modern, non-generic look to set us apart from the rest of the league. I think they've succeeded in spades. Would you have rather had some plain-looking, run-of-the-mill jerseys or something distinguishable from other NBA teams? I choose the latter.

Resorting to insults makes you look foolish and displays your ignorance. If you want Tim to take your argument/opinion seriously into consideration, I suggest you learn how to state your case in an intelligent and rational manner. I'm sure he would respect you a considerable amount more. About the hats with Chinese characters on them...it's just a piece of merchandise that will be available for purchase - nobody's shoving it down your throat or forcing you in any way to buy one. If you don't care for it, then don't buy one. As for me, I'll be right behind Tim gettin' me one. In fact, I'll probably purchase one for each member of my immediate family. In case you haven't noticed, Chinese characters are tremendously popular nowadays. Look around the league with all the NBA players with Chinese characters tatooed on their bodies. Allen Iverson and Marcus Camby off the top of my head with countless more athletes sporting them. I've even noticed T-Mo has some. Look around the United States at everyday, ordinary people. I've seen a crapload of people sportin' em. A vast majority of people must think they look cool. I'm one of 'em.

Oh, and to blu_monkey....congrats on your new job with the Rocket's organization!! I'm really happy for you. I don't know Tim personally, but from reading his posts...it's obvious he is a classy and all-around, great person.

i agree, and in addition, i think the rockets organization is cahoots with the chinese government to take over the entire city of houston.

I've never seen tattoos of chinese letters/words on any NBA player's arms, forearms either, if I did, it must be all the marketing the Houston Rockets did.

Your agree with much of your observation. But you are forgetting one thing: The team is out to make money. Like it or not. As a fan, I accept this, in which is a reason I pay 50.00 for a nose bleed seat. Now to dispute your selfish communistic view points, you need to look further than your own person well being and tastes.

As a true fan, I want the Rockets/Houston to be on top. Similar as to the Lakers, Cowboys, and Yankees being America's team, the Rockets are shooting to be more than America's team. Simple market strategy would tell you that the fan base of 1 player with a potential fan base of several million vs 15 players of a potential fan base of 3 million would easily convince you on how to market your next few years. The more money the rockets make, the broader their coverage, the more likely we'll have the best players.
