I would take varejao in a heart beat. Flopping aside, his pros outweigh his cons. Hustle player, defends, decent rebounder and almost averaged a block a game in 28 minutes last year. Also 2nd team defensive team last year. The guy is slightly better than lowry and miller, so I think he is probably getting a close to appropriate contract.
Ugh not this guy, <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YxBNLGtIuCM?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YxBNLGtIuCM?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
Varejao is overall a decent player he just doesn't strike me as an effective player in the postseason. He seemed helpless against more athletic bigs in the postseason. The few games I watched in the playoffs with the cavs, varejao just seemed helpless against the likes of howard , garnett, he gets abused on both ends of the court. Cleveland already had the right pieces in the backcourt their deficiency was in the frontcourt and varejao was a big reason for it.
Good reply with very good points. Yeah I think upper echelon bigs can give him trouble, there is definitely a ceiling on his game. But really Yao should (keyword: should) be the one taking care of guys like Howard and Garnett. From what I've read he has grown to 6'11 and gained 30 lbs (now listed at 260) since joining the league. And still, as a backup center I have a tough time listing others who are better than him. The guys I would really want as a backup are vets who age gracefully like Deke (Marcus Camby would be perfect, but too expensive I think). I would take Gortat but you would have to pry Orlando's cold dead hands off of him to get him.
As much as I hate watching Varejao play, he would be awesome for this team. He is like a Scola in terms of you hate him, but you would love him on your team. He's a scrapper.
Wow, i'm a little surprised at all the hating on floppers. We've got at least 1 pretty awesome flopper ourselves in Brad Miller. If you think Miller is good at drawing charges without flopping, think again. Besides, it's one less flopper against us we have to worry about. Nobody is known to be a flopper unless it sells and boy can Varejao sell it. Imagine Miller and Varejao manning the low post tag team. If your name isn't Okur and love the low post, you're basically screwed. D. Howard would have fits swapping between Yao/Scola to Miller/Varejao tag team floppers and have a total play time of 12 mins with that front court lineup. While we're at it, we can throw in the slashers into this mix as well. Think about slashin to the hoop and seeing basically 2 7 ft guys flying even if you're all of 6'1 and a buck nuthin weight wise and gettin the foul called. Sweet. Decent big men are rarely available and most will be overpayed so i'm not under any illusion that we can get a better big man on the cheap any time soon. My only concern is what they'll ask for in return. If Gilbert is holding onto his word about getting a "super star" in return and/or is still writing in comic san font, he can forget it. We may have a glut of PF but we can't say he's not better than most our bigs. Apart from Yao and Scola, everyone else is of debatable value in comparison.
Yes. And I feel like if he played here we would love him just like the fans love him in Cleveland. I think the flopping is why people hate him and we only tend to hate floppers when they're on an opposing team. Nobody here is mad at Scola.
Varejao is vastly underrated. I remember seeing his adjusted +/- stats and they are really pretty amazing. He would be a great addition. And for those saying he was helpless in the playoffs, he was injured. He played the whole postseason with a bad back. Varejao is one of the best defenders in the NBA.
Varejao is an excellent backup center for Yao and he is an amazing fit to our running system. He can defend the post, he's the best pick-n-roll defender in the game among bigs, he rebounds, he's blocking shots and he flops (we were the best team in the NBA in that category last season. 250 offensive fouls for our enemies  ) So.... Yes. Yes. Yes. But we can't give them anything they want. Portland can part ways with Oden. we can give just Jordan and jeffries exp. This package is not good enough, so forget about it.
Most people dislike AV unless he's playing on you're team. Dude is a legit 7 footer who does the dirty work and is an efficient player. Rebounds, plays D , hits FT, etc. Varejao gives us quality size at the 4/ 5. When made in conjunction with another move I approve of this message.
I would rather just keep Jefferies honestly. JJ can guard wings as well as the post. May not be quit the rebounder but his salary comes off the books at the end of this year and could probably be signed for the vet. miniumum if they wanted him back next year. Anderson's contract is one of the worst I have seen in the past two seasons signed.
How many hustle players do you guys want on this team? Verejao better than Lowry? That's definitely an immediate overreaction
So...hustle players are bad? I think you might have a little homerism in your statement, but hey you have your view and I have mine. Cool with me. I love Lowry too, but I do think AV is slightly better. Quality big men and centers are harder to find than PGs, especially with the new hand checking rules.
Varejao for 2Pat + Jeffries + Hayes (via LeBron TE) = Rockets get under the tax. Brooks, Lowry, Smith Martin, Lee Battier, Budinger Scola, Varejao, (Hill) Miller, Yao, (Varejao), Hill I think there are enough reasons to do this. I'm beginning to like the idea more.
Switch Hayes for Hill and you got your self a deal. But that leaves us without any assets for a potential trade for a superstar down the line.
