Tom Abercrombie: NBA not calling just yet

NZ Breakers and Tall Blacks star Tom Abercrombie says Australian speculation around NBA interest in his services is news to him.

During Sunday night's televised game between the Breakers and Kings in Sydney, commentator and Aussie hoops legend Andrew Gaze claimed the Houston Rockets were looking closely at the spring-heeled Kiwi small forward.

Abercrombie, 23, first popped up on international scouts' radars after some outstanding performances for the Tall Blacks at the world championships in Turkey earlier this year.

Since then he's continued his rapid development with a string of strong displays as the Breakers have forged a 7-2 record in the new Aussie NBL season. Ironically Sunday night's game when Gaze tipped the NBA interest was probably Abercrombie's worst of the campaign, with the 1.98m leaper going just two-of-10 from the floor and one-of-five from the line as he finished with five points and three rebounds.

Abercrombie said today that if the Rockets were interested in him they were yet to spell that out to his agent whom he admitted was talking to several interested clubs with an eye to the future.

"It was the first I'd heard of it," shrugged Abercrombie after the first day of preparations for Thursday's visit from the red-hot Cairns Taipans. "There are a few teams out there who kinda have me on their radar, but that's just what happens.

Abercrombie said he had spoken to his agent on Monday and the Rockets had not been mentioned. "He said a couple of teams have been asking and have said they've got their eye on me. I've just got to play some good basketball, then I'll really get noticed."

The Aucklander has signalled his interest in playing in Europe next year, though clearly if a pathway opened up to the NBA that would take priority.

A Rockets media spokesman told stuff.co.nz that he had not heard of any specific interest in any international players at the moment, but that it was possible global scouts are monitoring individuals.

THE NBA's Houston Rockets are scouting Melbourne Tigers Luke Nevill and Eric Devendorf.

While that might be surprising given the Tigers' 2-8 start to the NBL season and neither player has taken the league by storm, the NBA scouting network is massive and that league's needs can be different to what works in Australia.

Rockets scout David Patrick, a former Tigers junior who played in the NBL with Canberra Cannons, is in Australia checking on players and will be at The Cage tomorrow night to see Nevill and Devendorf play against the New Zealand Breakers.

Young Breakers jumping jack Tom Abercrombie is also on Patrick's radar, which scopes as far as Europe, the Asia-Pacific region and a portion of the US as he searches for draft prospects and free-agent talent.

It is more than likely centre Nevill and import guard Devendorf were already on NBA scouting reports before now, given they both played four years in college (Nevill at Utah and Devendorf at Syracuse). Nevill had a season in the NBA D-League before signing with the Tigers.

"He's probably got hundreds of players he's looking at, but they're two," Tigers coach Al Westover said yesterday.

"They're both still young and they do things the NBA would look at.

"Eric can beat guys off the dribble and create his shot and Luke could be an NBA player, but probably just needs to be more active defensively.

"They're trying to improve the level of the D-League and make it more a development thing (for the NBA) and they would both fit into that category. That's a tough league."

The NBL is proving a tough league for Nevill (10.7 ppg, 7.1 rebounds), Devendorf (13.2 ppg) and all the Tigers as they try to find the missing keys that will unleash a winning run.

But there were encouraging signs in last Sunday's road loss to the defending champion Perth Wildcats so the Tigers, who are averaging just 77.0 ppg, have something to build on, especially on the inside where Nevill continues to get established and in the backcourt with Corey "Homicide" Williams calling the shots.

Fact: NOONE OUT OF THE NBL HAS BEEN A FACTOR IN THE NBA

Taking this into account I would never draft/sign anyone out of the NBL in Australia and expect anything

Both of them straight out of collage. The NBL is probably some of the worst basketball on earth. I would LOVE to support local Australian basketball but take it from a local the players are not going to cut it in the NBA. The basketball is so crap and boring that most people I know are not watching the game when we are live or fast asleep like me.

Please don't drive up your hopes
