Think of all the lawns of American homes that get watered... Now that is wasteful. The 'American' Lawns are not sustainable.
Do you take a shower/bath? You are wasting drinking water. Do you water your lawn? You are wasting drinking water. The benefit of being a first world country means we have abundant access to both drinking water and are also able to "waste" drinking water doing other things with virtually zero consequence except for the water bill you all pay monthly. Yeah, third world countries don't have clean water but its not like we're shipping our drinking water to them. Us using water has absolutely zero direct correlation to the quantity/quality of drinking water available in third world countries. Yes, we should strive to be less wasteful and be more frugal but we're not exactly teetering on some drinking water crisis. I do understand though that it may become a problem in the future as droughts and other occurrences do happen; Austin being a prime example of a city forced to ration water... But we're talking about a minuscule amount of water, less water that you probably waste in a single shower in a day, that is being dumped for charity/viral trend. Just think of it as a transfer of resources (water to monetary donations) and really they most likely are paying more (if the $10 thing is true) to charity than they are to the increase in their water bill from the bucket.

It's not about water, it's about energy. If it was easy to just send millions of gallons of water over and then distribute it, i don't think we'd have much of a problem. Purification and distribution systems are needed, not more water.

not sure you understand how desalinization or water conservation works. Wasting clean water is harmful; desalinization is very costly (both energy and money).
