I'll take that from our defensive stopper.

Oh man that was too funny. :D and true.

The reason I think it'll be Rice is because when JVG was talking about the needs of the team he mentioned we needed more shooters. Which says to me the job is Rice's to lose. Contract year expect him to have his best year as a Rocket.

Rice will most likley have the starter minutes at first, but his defense is aged so who ever else shows fast improvment (PIATKOWSKI) will finish the season. I just do not think that Boki will improve (defense) fast enough this year to get much time.

Actually, why not. The only players I would see which Mobley could hardly guard are the SF/PF guys like Nowitzki, Garnett, Marion - but they would be guarded by the Griffins, so...why not.

I'd still prefer getting Artest, though :D.

so weve got one old guy who used to have amazing skills but has a deteriorating unathletic body, one young guy with streaky and questionable skills but good athleticism, a middle aged guy who plays tenacious D but no O, another middle aged guy who is an amazing shooter but with questionable D.

Can we just combine them all and make voltron or devastator or something? at least we can foul a lot if we need to...

    good point!

and seeing a. griffs stats from a few years ago (49% shooting/7ppg) sounds pretty decent.

    Adrian Griffin

The Rockets will be starting two Vultures for defensive purposes next season.

In my opinion it's Adrian Griffin. We don't have anything else like a defensive stopper, and I think JVG will demand at least one guy he can rely on to sick 'em most of the time.

Rice is too much of a defensive liabiliy, IMO, to survive long as a starter for Van Gundy, Boki hasn't shown anyone anything, Pike is a guy who has shown that he's good as a sub, bad as a starter, and Eddie will probably be too slow footed to play much 3.

We might make a trade, but if we do I suspect it's for a tough 4.

I think that Rice will be the opening day starter because (1) Among the SFs we have he's the only guy who has been a regular starter in the past (given that Pike is not a SF). (2) Rice has played for JVG before and Jeff actually likes him.

However, I don't see Rice getting a lot of minutes. He will probably play around 20 minutes per game. The rest of the minutes will be taken by AG and I agree that JVG will throw some three guard lineup with Steve, Cat and Pike out there. I hope that Boki will finally get some minutes. But judging from the way he played in the Euro games this month I wouldn't count on it.

Here are the two best posts of this thread, both of them from nyquil:

    AND

    Way to go nyquil!:D

I think that the primary 3 should be Boki. Look at all the PT EG got, and both were equally highly touted by scouts during their respective draft years. He should be given time. After that, it should be Pike, AG (is his back really that spastic?), and then Rice (the latter 2 missing tons of minutes from injuries, not lack of skills.)

Glen Rice will probably be the starting SF for the first ten games(probably five) of the season, then it will probably be either Adrian Griffin or Pike...but if you're looking for defense AG is your best choice because Rice never played good D in his life.

Rice or Piatkowski will start. Granted Griffin is a good defensive stopper, Piatkowski is the better perimeter shooter, which is the perfect compliment to Yao for kickout passes around the perimeter in a post up situation. It'll make the opposing teams have to play honest against Yao oppose to the defensive moves like the Celts made last year pretty much suffocating Yao with 3 or 4 men at a time anytime he got the ball.

I think that with a highly defined defensive system, Boki will be able to perform well defensively. In addition, with the double teams that are sure to be in place around Yao, Mobley, and Francis, he is going to get a ton of open looks. Once he gets some confidence, he will take off and will make Rice into the trade fodder or salary cap relief we will need.

I don't understand what you base any of this on. In my mind a player who has trouble keeping his European counterparts in check would be a liability no matter what the system.

In regard to his offensive capabilities, I can't believe there is still this misconception that his game is the same as Peja's. From everything we have seen or heard it he is not a deadeye shooting poor mans Peja, but more of a slasher in the mold of Terkolu. I know he went 24/25 in the workout. I know he won an impromtu 3 point shootout one day in practice....so what. He has yet to show anything on the court either in games or the summer league.

Barring the sort of trade that we need (Artest), I'll go with Glen Rice, since JVG seems to be looking at having an inside-out, fast-break team. That is, kick it out to the shooters; on the break, the other Rox are back first, Rice arrives near the end of the 24 second clock (pant pant pant, gettin' too old for this s**t) to take a 3.

Still hopin' on Artest, though. Hey, one can dream.
