He has been a part of the Greek National Team since June 7, 1998. He took last summer off, they didn't need him. They have another center that was better. His parents are ethnic Pontian Greeks that had moved to Georgia for work. While in Georgia, he was born there. His parents moved back to Greece and raised him there.

Suns Select Tsakalidis with 25th Pick

Posted: June 28, 2000

The Phoenix Suns used their second-straight first-round draft pick to choose Iakovos "Jake" Tsakalidis with the 25th pick in the NBA Draft.

Tsakalidis is a 7-2, 282-pound center that played for AEK in the Greek League and was a member of the Greek National Team. Originally born in the Republic of Georgia in the former Soviet Union, he moved to Greece at 14 and holds dual Georgian and Greek citizenship.

Last season, Tsakalidis helped AEK (19-7) to a third-place finish in the Greek League and first place in both the Saporta Cup and the Hellenic Cup. He averaged 9.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and shot .593 FG and improved to 11.4 points and 7.2 rebounds while shooting .571 from the field. He was also on the Greek National Team that played in the 1999 European Championship and has been a member of the national team since July 7, 1998.

Under the basket, there is no longer the need of Jake Tsakalidis. The Memphis centre, who last played for the National Team at EuroBasket 2003, is no longer a first option for Yannakis after Lazaros Papadopoulos blossomed during the 2004 Olympics (top scorer and rebounder of the team) and has turned himself in one of Europe's top centres.

I think CD pulled this trade to play a joke on Yao to see if he can tell the difference between Padgett and Big Jake when he gets back.

I dont know that this is a trade thats anything to cheer about. I mean, not a bad trade but Jake wont really be doing much for us except if a spot opens up through an injury. I think the real reason to get excited is that they made a move that shows they have changes on their mind. Bring in a PG!

Sucks that we didn't get Ha! It would be interesting to see Chinese YOF and Korean HaOF battle it out.

HaOF-Ha deserves a chance. JVG sucks! Yao got another chance after sucking his first few games.
YOF-Yao improves, he has skill.
HaOF- Ha can improve, too. The Rockets run the type of offense in which Ha can blossom.
HaOF- Watch in 2 years, Ha can be starting C for Rockets over injury-prone Yao.
YOF- Yao can beat Ha with a broken leg.
HaOF- Yao will he getting lessons from Ha.
etc...

Yao - "Scott, you've grown!"
Jake - "I'm not Scott. I'm Jake, the new guy."
Yao - "Ehh, all you white guys look the same. When did Sura grow a beard?"

Good move. We needed a little more depth at center and Big Jake fits our style of play. I'd have preferred a quick, athletic center that could have given us a different look at the center position but I'm pleased with the added depth nonetheless.

I really don't understand those who think this is a bad trade. Absolute worst case scenario is that it makes no impact whatsoever.

p.s. The Greek community in Houston has to be stoked. We have a monopoly on Greek players in the NBA!

now i see how this trade got approved since the salaries weren't matched.
in general this is a good deal, buz scott and steve r overlapping n scott was rarely used. itz good tat we can use every single asset to make this team special w/ more different types of role players.

I cant believe everyones dissing this trade. Big jake is actually not a scrub. last season when he wa starting for the grizz, he putup some nice numbers for them. he is a humongus body who will relieve deke and yao when he gets back.

how much does memphis' TE worth? when does it expire?

I think this is a good trade. we lost padgett, who doesn't play much, and overlap with Novak, but we got a fresh TE (at least a little bit longer), and we have a big guy in the middle. Good call, CD.

Guess..

Insurance just in case something happens to Yao, and we have to run a Deke/Tsakalidis Center combo.

Well, I'm speculating that they used their TE to get Padgett, which produces a new TE for us equal to Padgett's salary, and expiring one year from today.

make sense?
