I think CD and the Rockets FO are positioning for a bigger trade. They took care of the back-up C position. I dont think Tsakalidis will get many minutes in and is there to be our short term insurance in case Yao or Deke go down later in the year. Alot of you pointed out the redundancy in Scott Padgett at PF and hes clearly not made to play C. I think its important to remember we didnt really lose anything in this move. We still have a TE, Bobby Sura's contract and either one of Kirk Snyder or Bonzi Wells to move for other pieces. I think a PG like Earl Watson is on the way.

    Big Jake, huh? :)

With Shane and Jake and Bonzi, it's sort of like a mini Grizzlies reunion! :p :D

Sounds like we get a new TE out of this equal to Padgett's salary.

They give us Tsakalidis; we use our TE = legal trade #1
We give them Padgett; they use their TE = legal trade #2

Trade #2 generates a TE for us.

Fully agree - sums up my opinion. Plus, Padgett was really redundant with Novak, and if Novak gets two minutes a game more because of it, even better.

Not a single negative to this trade. No super positives either, but nothing negative.

    /is content.

I like this deal if for no other reason than you get somebody who can spell Deke and Yao for somebody who gave us nothing really (sorry Padge).

Reasons to like this trade :

    1) I won't have to hear Worrell call the guy Pageant as often anymore
    2) We won't have a 6'6" center playing as much
    3) Deke can finally take a break
    4) You can't get less output than Padge was giving us. Well not unless you go find an overweight Moochie Norris and start him (been there, done that).
    5) Our depth at PF and C just increased.
    6) Chuck Hayes may last more than 25 minutes before fouling out.

The first thing that went through my mind when I heard this trade was "Most of the people on Clutchfans are going to hate it...and likely for no reason at all". I happen to actually like the trade myself.

In fact, I took notice of Tsakalidis back before the season even started and thought he could step in decently after Gasol injured himself at the world championships. This post from another message board is proof of that...

So yeah. Pretty I find it pretty interesting that I brought him up 5 months ago and now he's on our team. I hope he actually gets a few minutes here and there to show what he can do. When we're up 30 in some games, it couldn't hurt.

CD strikes again.(and not for the last time)

I love this deal for many reasons, most of which have already been brought up.
Jake was already a world class athlete when he picked up basketball. He hasn't been playing long at all and has a dedication to be the best he can be.Jake's desire shows when he's out there on the court as well as off it.
    The guy has shown improvement.

    He has upside.

At minimum he becomes the longterm backup for Yao.
Then again Jake could very well become a valuable commodity sought after by another team.

We give up nothing and get nice insurance with decent minutes.

There should be at least one more deal at the deadline bringing a point guard, but this one had to be done now because of the TE.So don't worry.Who knows, maybe well get that 4 too.

I love the way this team is being assembled.

We give up Swift,Gay,Scotty, and actually use the TE while picking up Battier(much more than a role player) and Jake(backup center)....I'm glad CD and Jerry have the kind of relationship they do.

I'm pleased. Padgett did not impress me with his shooting. The most attractive thing about Padgett was his cheap contract. Tsakilidis is strong as a bulldozer. He will be helpful. Former swimmer - good endurance. He is stronger than he looks. This will give us a cheap banger with an expiring contract if it does not work.

    Good job Rockets front office!!!

Go Rockets -we have 6 hard fouls to offer you Mr. Nowitski from a banger.

    Welcome to Houston Big Jake!!

    Go Rockets!!!!

I forgot---Tsakilidis makes less than Stephen Hunter and will contribute more I think.

    Good move!!!!

I dont think it was a bad trade. Jake is not that awful in the paint. He is Not in the Deke Class- but a back up why not? At worst this trade is neutral- to me it tells me that JVG is not going to have his way all the time- Scotty was his guy!

Sure we expected a PG from Memphis- but who knows, we still have Sura's contract.

Just diappointed we did not get Melvin Ely- this guy could fit in here well.

Well it's not a big trade. Padgett played only 8.3 MPG and i don't think Tsakalidis will play more. He is bigger, he's a center so that is pretty good deal, but i'm not excited about that. That is no a big change fo Rockets.
But Padgett sucked in Houston, i thing. He didn't make 3-pointers when he was open and i did not like him in Rockets' jersey.

    Just crunching some numbers here.

In games this season where Jake played at least 15 minutes, these are his stats...

    *In 21.3 minutes, 9 games
    5.3 points
    5.6 rebounds
    1.0 blocks
45% FG (includes a 3-10 game...but he never ever shoots that much so I would ignore it...that brings him up to 50%)

Also, he had some damn good stretches in '05/'06 where he got some minutes and was more than impressive. Look at his numbers for last year, in games where he played at least 20 minutes...

    *In 24.9 minutes, 18 games
    10.3 points
    8.4 rebounds
    1.2 blocks

Not bad at all. In fact...I like the guy and I didn't even know he played that well at times last year...

So, if Deke plays about 26 minutes a night until Yao gets back (which is ideal, I think), then Jake can step in for about 13-18 minutes (with Juwan/Chuck filling the leftover time). If he could give us 4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and a block on 50% shooting in that amount of time, that would be awesome. I believe he can. Those are basically his career averages after all.

So not to be outdone by the Spurs trade, the Rockets have their own

    0 - 0 + 0 = 0
