I am really happy abou this. I had Jackson on my fantasy team on Smallworld.com last year for a long time, he pulled down alot of rebounds. He did a good job after Fortson went down. I started following him closely and liked what I saw. I say if he can be any kind of a post threat offensively and get 7-9 boards a game he is a steal for 4 mil a year! I think hes a great guy to have on a roster and I really think that offering him a 6 year deal is a way to get GS to shy away. 6 years 30-40 mil earlier on in the offseason would have pi$$ed me off, but 4 mil a year this late with the injury to Mo makes me happy. $150 for league pass suddenly seems reasonable!

Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Where the hell is all this negativity coming from? I'm not getting it here. This guy had a rookie-of-the-year caliber season before his injury and we are inches away from signing him? What the f-uck is this? Good god, folks. Take a look at this...

    Probable starting lineup before:

    C-Cato
    PF-Thomas
    SF-Rice
    SG-Mobes
    PG-SF

    NOW.....

    C-Marc Jax
    PF-Thomas
    SF-Rice
    SG-Mobley
    PG-SF

You know, if I had a choice, I'd choose team B because of the difference of big men. We get the exception, sign Jackson, and have a much better chance at the post-season. And half the BBS b****es. And it goes on and on and on...

I agree with everything Thanos says.

Cry all you want, but does this HURT the Rockets? Does it matter how much he makes, if we aren't going to be under the cap for a while?

S#it, all these posters who cry about the Rockets overpaying for players need to look and be thankful we have an owner willing to give up his left nut to win.

Hye BTM, explain what NIKEstrad saw with Jackson looking in shape and working out with Cat? And explain Swopa who is a Warriors fan. In fact the reason he didn't go to the goodwill games is, I believe Swopa, was because he didn't want to get hurt and hurt his value. He was/is in heated negotiations with the Warriors.

<b>Cat, you're very funny. He averaged his points and rebounds on a terrible team. Look at how Mo Taylor did on the Clippers, he was 17/7. Now look how he did on the Rocks. A big bust, IMO.
    </b>

The guy isn't a bust, he got hurt.

<b>He had one good year on a bad team and is getting a big contract for it. Yogi had one good year on a bad team and got a big contract for it. Please don't make me point out the OBVIOUS similarities. If he was really this good, why wouldn't GS pony up some money for him? It doesn't make sense.
    </b>

I don't care if he had a great year with a bad team, he still did it against NBA teams didn't he? I don't understand, if you're on a "bad" team (actually banged up team), then you're not in the NBA or something!? The reason Golden State didn't pony up the dough was because Danny Fortson grabs about 500 rebounds a game and he's healthy, and Jamison is a freaking franchise player. Plus they couldn't get rid of Dampier if they wanted (and I'm not sure whether they want to or not) so Jackson was the easiest guy to let go of.

<b>At least with Mason we get a tested player who can do more things than just score. Jackson is HORRIBLE defensively. We're talking worst in the league here. Jackson has a good jumper. WOW. I remember John Amaechi had a good year where everyone said he could hit the J. Same goes for Ike Austin. Now they're hitting like 30%.
    </b>

Well it was easier to get Jackson then Mason. And come back when Amaechi puts up the numbers that Jackson put up. As for Ike Austin, the guy was a joke. He had a bad work ethic long before he came to the league, had a decent year under the watchful eye of Riley who kept him in shape, now he's sloppy and out of shape again.

<b>Cat, Jackson does not have good feet or tremendous desire. He b****ed behind the scenes about his role, which is something a rookie should never do. Why are you making this stuff up? This guy will not bring us to the post-season. Mark my words on this. </b>

You're the only one calling Jackson a cancer, even Golden State fans weren't calling him this. Where are you getting your info. You want a link about his work ethic, how about getting us a link where he was called a cancer?

<b>And we don't want Mookie Blaylock or Bob Sura. Mookie is a bad apple and Bob Sura sucks in every way.

btw- How about you show me some articles that say Jackson has a great work ethic and the like. LINK PLEASE.</b>

Again, you want an article about his great work ethic (go talk to some Temple fans about this), how about showing us a link where you claimed he complained behind the scenes. LINK PLEASE! And I'll take Bobby Sura, he would give us backcourt depth.

    The Rockets now have:

    1. Cat Mobley- 1998 steal of the year
    2. Steve Francis - 1999 ROY
    3. Marc Jackson - 2000 ROY runner up and would have won it if not for an injury
    4. Eddie Griffin - 2001 steal of the draft at the 7th pick.

What more can Rudy T and CD possibly do to try and bring a winner to Houston. For those of you bashing MJ get off of his back he was the best rookie in the league last year. I can't beleive some of your were actually wanting Calvin Boothe!

WHao, I like the passion on this baord....

FOr most posters (including very, very senior ones!!) either this is bust or our magic potion to make playoffs.

Well, the truth is most often we end making choices which are FUll og Hope (alwasy a steal, except when you pay the max, and saying that you paid for the potential) and you just evaluate the situation based on the lowest expected performance IF MJ was truly 17/9 for another team, even a lousy one at it, we should be okay for 4 M a year if we get 13/7....If he gives more (like 17/9), it would be steal...If he gives 10/6, ew know we have another Cato!!

SO relax guys, this is the best that could have happened...it was only Mason versus Jackson discussion.....in the current situation...and paying 24 M is ok..as long as we gte 65+ games, and 13 /7...

On the surface, this signing is a gamble.
Jackson was on a team lacking any other notable big men for the majority of the season, and thus his role increased, as did his numbers. He only has a year under his belt and traditionally, there have been a long list of players who's performance goes down after signing a long-term contract.

However, instead of giving the poor guy the benefit of the doubt, it seems like he's being doubted before he's even officially signed his name on any contract!

As we all know, there is a real shortage of decent big men in this league, and in my opinion - as well as in the opinions of most - Jackson is among those few. Whether he is more a PF or centre doesn't really matter - what matters is that the Rockets are adding depth and a more than capable big body at their weakest position. In the short term, MJ helps fill the void of losing Mo Taylor and Dream, and adds toughness and size to a weak frontocurt. In the long term, Cato now has a contemporary to give him a fight for his job and to add some pressure on the Lazy One. He is also fits in with the team by virtue of his relative youth and friendship with Mobes. For Cato's first couple of seasons here in Houston, he had been placed in the shadows of a local legend and thus avoided pressure by hiding in Olajuwon's presence. Then, it seemed like he would may have too much pressure set on him, yet at the same time no real contender to replace his starting center role - a double whammy.
Now we can sit back and watch Cato and Jackson compete for the starting center slot, and let the better player - and the one that wants it more - claim it.

Sure, this signing may turn out for the worse and Jackson may turn out to be a Cato-clone (now wouldn't that be fun). However, at $4million/year, it really isn't that much of a financial gamble. Especially when you compare it to the market value of other more inferior big men. In short, I applaud the signing.

Bottom line: MJ is better than nothing and he makes us a better team. I am almost positive he's better than Cato or Collier, so to me, we got stronger in the frontcourt. The money? It's not mine and I don't know if this decreases our flexibility in the future. But, the trend looks like the superstar guys will stay with their team, so don't hold your breath if you're waiting for a Lamar Odom or Elton Brand type player to show up in Houston. I didn't think C-webb would stay in Sac-town or that Carter would sign an extension with Toronto.

A second round pick who averages 16 and 10 in the NBA probably has a good work ethic. I love this signing. I wanted this to happen before we got Eddie.

Way to go Les, CD, and Rudy. We want to win now.

Here's one from a guy that you might recognize:

<B>He fits our team," Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson said of Jackson. "He's a hard-nosed guy. He does a lot of everything. He shoots outside, plays inside and puts a lot of effort into everything he does." </B>

    Enough!

I'm tired of hearing about how great of a rebounder Marc Jackson is, it's time to bring back old posts...

    http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11963&perpage=30&pagenumber=5

MJ is a decent pickup for this season since Mo's gone, but 3 years from now, he'll be useless.

He can score, big freaking deal, we've got Glen Rice (and hopefully Griffin in the future), Cuttino Mobley, Steve Francis, and Mo Taylor (after this year) as our main scoring options.

Who gives a crap about a 5th scorer?

What team in the league has 5 guys that are scorers?

We need a defensive minded C that doesn't demand the ball and gets garbage points. We don't need a jumpshooter that only played 55 games his rookie year and pulled down 10 boards for a HORRIBLE SHOOTING team.

We shouldn't be investing so many years in a guy that could only play in 55 games.

And no I don't have any idea of who would be better than Jackson, but I don't think we should just throw money at Jackson because he's our only real option.

Also who cares if he was runner up for Rookie of the Year, don't you guys remember how horrible this draft class was?

YEAH! WE'VE GOT THE BEST PLAYER IN A CLASS THAT HAD NO ONE THAT WAS ANY GOOD!

A 1-2 year deal would have been fine, but 6 years is insanity. It's Matt Maloney Part 2...

    ...i hope i'm wrong...

Guys, guys... When you sign even a half-decent big man to a contract this reasonable it does not mean you are tied to him for the duration of the contract... in other words, he will be very tradeable. See: Othella Harrington.

I can't believe the posters who are b****ing on here. Propose your own solution! What would you prefer? We have no size on this team outside of Cato. All of you guys sweating the length of the contract, chill. A cheap capable big man is the perfect lubricant for a trade down the line.

Jackson put up similar numbers to Antonio Davis and Davis was an all-star making max. We are getting him for the same amount as Matt Moloney. What can you complain about.

It is a big deal he can score, because he is a low post scorer, something we lack. As for him grabbing 10 rpg on a bad team, he still had to get the rebounds. It wasn't like the other team backed away and let him get a free rebounder. If we use the excuse that he was on a bad team, that means he didn't have any help to get a rebound. I guess that means that Jamison's rebounding didn't matter because he was on the same team. Fortson grabbed double figure rebounds on horrible teams and everybody wants him. Why does their rebounds count but not Marc Jackson!? He brings rebounding, low post scoring, and a versatile guy who can play the 4 and 5 spot. People can call it garbage points, if you can score 16 ppg worth of garbage points then you're pretty damn good. You must also be a pretty good rebounder. He's cheap (only about 4 million per year), and his contract is tradeable. He had a great year before getting injured, he works hard, he's in shape, and he's a big body. He's young, and he's tough, and he's 270 pounds of muscle. He can hit from DEEP outside and bring big men away from the basket, and he gets our fast break going with his rebounding. What's the problem!? As for saying he will be useless in 3 years, actually Cato would be useless in 3 years because his contract would be running out around that time.

It is a big deal he can score, because he is a low post scorer, something we lack.

So after this year, who's going to lose touches so Jackson can post up?

    Cat, Steve, Mo, or Glen?

As for him grabbing 10 rpg on a bad team, he still had to get the rebounds. It wasn't like the other team backed away and let him get a free rebounder. If we use the excuse that he was on a bad team, that means he didn't have any help to get a rebound. I guess that means that Jamison's rebounding didn't matter because he was on the same team. Fortson grabbed double figure rebounds on horrible teams and everybody wants him. Why does their rebounds count but not Marc Jackson!?

I don't remember saying Jamison's and Fortson's rebounds weren't inflated. The point is ALL of the Warriors rebound numbers are inflated. It's just a matter of probability, Mo Taylor doesn't have high rebound numbers either, but I'm willing to bet if he played for a team that shot more bricks or allowed more shots, his rebound numbers would increase as well.

If Golden St. could shoot, then there would be less bricks, and therefore less rebounds for Jackson.

    What's the problem!?

He can't block shots. If a poll was taken over what the Rockets need at center during the season, I'm sure most of them would say we need to improve our interior defense. We need someone that would make little guards think twice about taking it to the hole, Jackson does not do this. I'd rather sign Pig Miller to a cheap contract and go search for someone that can block shots.

As for saying he will be useless in 3 years, actually Cato would be useless in 3 years because his contract would be running out around that time.

Cato's contract ends in 2006, that's a whole year before Jackson's contract would end...

    RocksMillenium,

You are RIGHT ON TARGET! Jackson is a class act and the anti-Cato. Hard worker, lots of heart, good shooter and rebounder. With our scorers and athletic ability, he will be a perfect fit and will fluorish in our system.

Rockets pulled a coup. And it's ironic that in a couple of years we may be even stronger than if Taylor hadn't been injured.

Or he could be a valuable piece to a trade during that time span.

What's wrong with scoring a lot of points?

What team in the league has 5 guys that are scorers?

OK, I may get flamed for this, but the Trailblazers have a lot of scorers and got a decent seed in the playoffs.

We have that...when Cato is healthy.

We shouldn't be investing so many years in a guy that could only play in 55 games.

Why not? I'm sure you were ready to give Hakeem more than Jackson's contract and he's missed quite a few games the past few years.

A 1-2 year deal would have been fine, but 6 years is insanity. It's Matt Maloney Part 2...

I don't see the comparison to Maloney at all. Maloney played a position that is easy to fill. Unfortunately someone was blowing their crack smoke in CD's office when that contract was negotiated. 6 years at about 4 million per season is a reasonable contract for a center with Jackson's skills.

I agree Doc Dallas, I think that the Rockets frontcourt could actually be stronger after this. We have someone who can block shots allegedly. If Cato shows any heart he can do that. Would I love a shotblocker, other then Cato? No question! Were there any available? I guess Jelani McCoy. The Marc Jackson signing is very different then the Maloney signing because all Maloney did was sit back and shoot. But yeah, Cato's contract runs out a whole year before Jackson's, which means we're stuck with him. So he has to become the shotblocker because he can't sit on the bench forever. And there aren't any shot-blockers available. Besides, we have two of them with Cato and Griffin, so I say get a low post scorer and rebounder, and work with it. And Jackson's is pretty soft against the cap. And most of all, maybe Jackson's work ethic and attitude can rub off and motivate Cato. Because if it does we have a pretty solid frontline. About 4 million dollars per year is a pretty nice gamble for a guy who put up 16 ppg and 10 rpg as a starter. It beats the alternative, having our frontcourt get slaughtered during the season, missing the playoffs, and r****ding the team's growth.
