Posted this in the trade thread: Details on the pick from the Memphis Flyer: The pick, at least, will never be a high one. It is top-14 protected every year and not eligible to be used until 2013. The Minnesota Timberwolves — who own the rights to the future first round pick the Grizzles sent to the Utah Jazz last season for Ronnie Brewer — are ahead of the Rockets in line for a Grizzlies first rounder. If the Grizzlies make the playoffs this season, the Wolves will get that pick in this summer's draft. In that event, the pick being sent to the Rockets will be eligible to be used starting in 2013 (you can't trade picks in back-to-back years). If the Grizzlies miss the playoffs this season, that pushes both picks back at least a year. If the pick owed to the Rockets is not exercised by 2016, the Rockets will receive a second-round pick and $3 million.
I'm hearing that this year 2010 will be a "weak" draft. I tend to agree. Make your best effort for the contrary. I do like jimmer though.
Bima, Do you know why teams trade players+cash consideration for future 2nd round picks that are top 55 protected? Just for the heck of it, and due to interest, I went through each teams future picks and saw it over and over. Is it just to clear cap room/roster spots? I can't think of any other advantage. They're basically giving up a player and money for that, and the other team gives up nothing. The biggest thing I can see the other team losing, regarding the draft pick, is the right to trade it because of the possibility (even though it is a very small one) the other team could end up with it. You got it. In any trade, both teams need to trade something. So, when there is a straight-up salary dump by one team into another team's cap space or trade exception, the other team needs to give SOMETHING in return. These top-55 protected future second rounders are just "nominal consideration" to the other team. When listing future picks, you can basically dismiss them. It's conceivable that the Rockets could have enough cap room to at least make a decent offer to Perkins (who is unrestricted and is from Beaumont). But my guess is that, unless he just hates it in OKC, he'll re-up with the Thunder. That situation is just too good to pass up for him. They'll be title contenders for the next decade.
Yes, I would imagine that the Thunder would have 'first dibs', 'home court advantage' etc. However, my question was just to the point of whether the Rox could be contenders for his talents to come to his (almost)'home'town. BTW - financially there has always been the question whether the Thunder would pay for Green after Durant/Westbrook. So, there is that, I suppose. Dadgum, KP would look good in a #43 Rox jersey...

Hey Bima Please correct me if I'm wrong. Out of all the first round picks we own, we can only trade one of our 2011 first rounders, as well as the 2014 first rounder, though it would have to be specified that the receiving team might not get the 2014, due the protection on the pick we sent to the Nets and therefore would have to wait a year or two to receive that pick (similar to the Grizzlies pick we received). Also, can we trade the Memphis pick? I think not, but I'm really sure. Thanks in advance.
Right. We can trade one of our 2011 picks since we are guaranteed to receive 2. The rest of our 1st rounders available to trade depend on when the Nets receive our pick from the T-Will trade. Basically, as of right now, we can't trade specific future picks due to that obligation, but I assume we can do like the Grizzlies did and tell the team that we have another obligation to fill, so they may have to wait a few years. Of course, when draft day rolls around and we still have our pick, we could then use it to make a trade. Bima wrote a great overview to this earlier in the thread, I believe it was post #19. Bima is the expert here, but I don't see any reason we couldn't trade the Memphis pick. It's basically just another first rounder with some obligations added on. Pugs
I was thinking, since we technically speaking aren't guaranteed a draft pick in 2013, we might not be able to trade that pick.
