I’m only speculating of course, but if I was in their position that would satisfy me. From their perspective, I think the Rockets are a very very good team for Yao. The want him to go first. This would show he’s a great talent, and would get him and them world wide attention. BUT, they would rather not have him go to a crappy team that might wreck him or just be chronic losers. The Rockets were an aberration this year. Due to major injury problems, they finished much lower than they should have. Then they won the lottery. If Yao sits on the bench all of next year, the Rockets will likely still make the playoffs, (barring more major injuries). Assuming he plays at least some, he can take some of the credit and look good. Further, the Rockets stand a very good chance of being a championship contender in a few years, if maturation goes as planned and major injuries don’t occur. This obviously would make him look good, and them look good, and make them money, etc. Perhaps as important as all of this is the fact that current Rockets coach took a raw big man and made him into a NBA legend. What better hands could they want to put their raw big man into? So I think they will do what they can to see that he stays in Houston.

According to Doc Rocket there are a lot of teams that want Ming bad, even more so than JW.

If this is true and I believe it is, we have nothing to worry about. We are going to come out of this with the best center prospect to enter the draft since Shaq or a package that blows away Odom, #8 and #12. :)

These already difficult negotiations with all the different levels of Chinese government are only going to get more difficult with the possible defection of Wang Zhi Zhi.

    Thanks for proving my point.

    It's called 'POSTURING.'

Fact is, ultimately, it's not even going to be the Sharks' GM's decision, that belongs to the owner. The GM may end up as just a mouthpiece, so take his opinions with a grain of salt.

As for it not being a business decision, (paraphrasing) 'It's going to be hard to replace Yao, he's such a big star and is great for the box office,...' This is ABSOULTELY a business decision!

    Everyone just relax.

I mean, did everyone really think it was going to be a simple as the Rockets going over, buying a few dinners and shaking a few hands, and saying, 'Please sign this paper, Mr. CBA-man.'

This is China for God's sake! They seem to relish protocol and being tough, even being a little difficult from time to time.

Of course, I'm not an expert on this issue, but on plain principle alone I would think the Chinese wouldn't officially sign off (however, they could have a solid framework for an agreement by the draft) until the World Championships at the earliest. No need to distract their star player.

Buckle up, it's going to get interesting!

We could always agree to put a no trade clause into the contract....draft Yao, then trade his rights away....

Interesting, as of now, this story isn't even on ESPN.com, the NY Post site, or even the Chronicle's site.

Now if they aren't harping on this story,....

Just take a deep breath, and have faith.

Actually, once we signed Yao, we couldn't trade him until December 15th at the earliest. As such, we can promise the Chinese that if we sign him, we absolutely will not turn around and trade him immediately.

As to a no trade clause, the collective bargaining agreement does not allow for these. The only exception is veterans with 10+ (?) years experence who sign a one year deal (like Barkley did with us on his last year). As such, any promise we give would be unenforceable under the CBA. Now if we gave a promise not to trade him, and broke it, China could always respond by trying to pull Yao back. Of course, Stern might even frown on us giving an unenforceable no trade promise, as violating the spirit of the CBA.

We could just pick him and trade him.

Why don't the Rockets just say, publicly, "We plan to select Yao Ming number 1 and now we're going over to China to finalize it" If things don't work out, we won't take him and will trade the pick, and the worst that will happen (imo) is that ESPN will report "After agreeing to take Yao Ming #1, the Rockets have traded the pick..." and everyone will forget about it in a month except the Shanghai Sharks (oh no, a lost stream of talent:rolleyes: ) and Yao Ming. IF things do work out, then they work out!

So, just tell them you will not trade him. Then trade him if you want. What is the big deal? If China wants to deal with US business men, they have to learn someday that we lie. This request is laughable (just like they can't request for a player in trade). Just tell them we have a Players Union that disallows this request. A communist govt will understand what a "labor union" is....LOL!!!

This is a no brainer. We are not allowed to put this request in writing...it would unravel the CBA agreement between owner and the Player's Union. Just say no! They will back off. If need be, just remind them that if we pick Ming as #1, then no other NBA team can ever have him until he signs with us under our terms. Show that to John Dao in writing!!!! If it is time to flex that Ace card, then do it.

This John Dao-Houston businessman appears to have called KRIV trying to get his name in print, same with the supposedly new GM of the Sharks...."Ling Shaio Ming"...I thought it was Li Yaomin??

This request will be waved off. Apparently, John Dao is an ignorant puppet.

I'm beginning to think that's what we're gonna do. It's important to China and the NBA that he go #1. Maybe the Bulls actually want Yao Ming? Who knows.

OK, I just read through all this. What is this talk of "no trade" clause?

This is NOT allowed in this situation! I will start a new thread with the plain text in the CBA. Stick that up John Doe's noes.

    Just say NO!!

I hate the fact that if someone thinks the Rockets shouldn't pick up Yao, they're instantly called "haters"...that's a gross overstatement.

the risks are too high for such an unproven commodity.
