A contender that has no way to add pieces other than using the MLE is different than the Rockets adding Brooks - especially when he will take away playing time from younger and more talented players.

I can’t imagine ANY scenario where he’s worth the minimum in year 4, if he’s even in the league still (and getting over a few minutes) it will be a miracle

The Brooks signing will be Stone’s undoing. Going to be very difficult to build around that contract/play style.

The cap is going to expand greatly. That contract won't be anybody's undoing. It's four years, bro.

4 years is the longest you could give a FA…..people say it’s no big deal and the cap will go up but it’s still 20 mil in dead money, not exactly nothing

And green, sengun, bari, tari are all up for big money in that time span. Unless you expect none of these guys to command some high deals it definitely has a high probability of being a huge hindrance. 4 years is a long time to have a shitty overpaid contract. It’s so easy to say now when the core young roster are on their rookie deals. Cap going up doesn’t expel it from being all of this

4yrs also flies by real fast, just think Bron to Heat for 4yrs or think how the Rockets haven't won/reached a Finals trip since 95'

If all goes to plan, Harden would be on his like his 4th squad in less than 4 seasons, so called time flies rather ya having fun or not

Brooks and VV just happened to be beneficiary of the team who was desperate and had big cap space to spend and had to spend it one way or other, and will have to re-spend it soon on the core draft picks in the upcoming 4 to 6 yr span

He is taking minutes from players like Tari for 4 years or at least for the foreseeable 2 years.....that is the worst thing.

Well NFL season is right around the corner, so it'll all even itself out, plus the USA exhibit games are going on, so there's that for some hoops fever until the NBA preseason comes about in I think early October

Agree. It's just a mind boggling tragedy not only to the amount Stone signed him for but the length is what really has me going WTH. My only glimmer of hope from this is that Brooks makes Tari a better player. Then coach plays the better player and benches the lessor regardless of salary. It's still going to screw us in the end though because we're going to have to let good player{s} go in the future because we're going to be capped out.

All you guys thinking a 20m contract is going to be crippling are showing how little you know about how the nba works and how the salary cap and future expansion of said cap is going to work. Brooks was rated the 2nd best perimeter defender in the NBA last season. What did the Rockets need most, perimeter defense. Brooks was brought here for one specific purpose and that is to shore up our horrible defense. Ime will control his bad shot taking or he will see his minutes diminish immensely. He may have been slightly overpaid, but in 3 or 4 years his contract will be easy to move. Most of you were willing to offer Cam the bank and he is a one-trick pony. Just all-around idiotic takes.

All you guys thinking a really good defensive player can’t make your team worse are showing how little you know about how the nba works….

I envision a group of homer Memphis fans telling anyone who will listen the same thing about Brooks the last two off-seasons. “Jenkins will control his bad shot taking or he will see his minutes diminish immensely”

Maybe Brooks won’t play much at all if we go by Ime’s “playing time must be earned” soundbite :D

Funny, i was trying to find this data yesterday because i wanted to see if he was the biggest negative player since he came into the league but i couldn't get basketballreference to go past 100 players, but this is about what i expected. People just don't understand that no matter how good his defense is, it's not possible for it to overcome his offense so he's always a massive negative. Think about if you took someone like Verlander but also made him hit 600 times in a season, sure he can give you 5 war as a pitcher but when he's giving you -8 war as a hitter....he's a negative

When Ryan Anderson was signed to a 4-year 80M contract, it was deemed okay because of the steep rise of the cap. Two years later, he became an untradeable deadweight.

I know the situations are not the same. The cap rise for Brooks is anticipated down the road, not at the signing like Ryno's case. But the lesson is still the same. Signing questionable players to long-term big contracts is a very risky business. If it doesn't work out, it can set you back for several years. The excuse for Anderson was that we needed a stretch-4 to contend. Now we aren't close to be contending, and we have a bunch of young guys we need to develop and take a good look at in the coming two years.
