lol a lot of naysayers here but I guess that's to be expected. I remember when Stoudamire got hurt and everyone was saying he was gonna be washed up. Never be the same player again etc etc etc. Now we got people saying that about Shawn Livingston. I dunno..maybe yes maybe no. Same for Francis.

But... Wow. I understand where you're coming from, but here's the problem:
ALL INJURIES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL.

This isn't a video game, people. Different injuries require different treatments and different amounts of work to heal. People's bodies are different. And Steve Francis has 6 years on Amare Stoudemire. His body already can't heal as well due to age, and we're talking about a MAJOR injury here.

Microfracture surgery is common for sports injuries. It's just used to create new cartilage in the knee.
But tears in the QUADRICEPS TENDON? That's INCREDIBLY different. That's what connects your quads to your knees. And we can't just create new muscles. The muscles have to heal, and then you have to work to make that weakness stronger than ever just to compensate for it. It's not, not, NOT anywhere near the same as microfracture surgery.

JEEZ, people. I'm not saying don't be optimistic about Francis' return, but use some COMMON SENSE. He has one of the worst possible non-catastrophic injuries for a basketball player.

And Shaun Livingston? Really? When did he come back from injury? He's 9 years younger than Francis.

I dunno, but people were saying Amare was done. Livingstone's knee injury is certainly worse than Francis..yikes I cringe everytime I see that video.

Quad is not the strongest muscle group in your legs. MattBull has no idea what he is talking about.

He may not be right about that, but he sure knows about this injury since he had it.

Was Francis's injury a complete tear or partial?

Because that would also make a difference.

I watched it once. I can't stand to see it again.
Microfracture surgery has come ahead by leaps and bounds. It's now quick and minimally invasive. And it's had a history of success. Jason Kidd, Zach Randolph, john stockton... They've ALL been able to come back healthy. While many haven't, the surgical techniques have improved even moreso.

But muscle surgery is very different from skeletal surgery. Who out there has EVER come back from quadriceps tendon surgery successfully? I'm not saying there's nobody; I don't know. But I can't imagine the list has more than one name on it.

You're absolutely right about making a smart investment. And if you are thinkin in those terms than you have to think even past next year. Will having francis on our team make us that much more of a contender for the title??? My answer is no, he is very replacable at this point in his career. So say they keep him next year. What about after next year??? If he leaves after next season all you are losing off the books is his measly 2 million salary which can't get you an impact player at all through FA. So the logical solution is to combine Bjax and Francis's salaries for an impact player which is very feasible because i think their salaries add up close to 8-9 million.. You could make the argument of keeping both of them all year next year and let them walk at the end of '09 and pick up an impact player through FA next offseason but then that doesn't really allow us to improve for next year..

And that's the point. He's had the injury, and he's had the doctors tell him what's what. He's had far more knowledgeable people than you or me tell him what he should expect. And in this case, I'm going to trust the people who know.

[rquoter]JCF: So looking ahead, what do you see as the biggest need areas-- besides just a full season of good health for Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming-- for this team to be able to go further next year?

DM: I’ll talk more in skill sets. We won’t be able to get everything because we don’t have a huge amount of [salary cap] room—we just have mid-level room. We’re looking for a guy who can attack the basket, shoot, probably a little more offensive-minded even though we want to keep our identity--we’re the second best defensive team in the league. We want to keep that up so we can’t trade it all off, but I think with an acquisition either through trade or free agency we’re looking more for someone who has the ability to score, and ideally it’d be somebody who can beat their man off the dribble and shoot.[/rquoter]

not intentional i'm sure, but he's describing a healhy Steve.

Yeah, you got me. I hate the Rockets. Always have. I only like T-Mac. I even hate Yao, but that's just because I hate Chinese people. I suppose my TRH [True Rockets Hatred] began back in '94 when I went to Kenny Smith's Basketball Camp. I've been hating the Rockets since then. Seriously! I secretly hate this team and try to subvert and destroy them by applying logic and reason to situations involving team memers.
I guess I can't fool y'all anymore. So I'll come out and say it. I'm a long-time jazz fan. They're clearly the best team ever, and the Rockets lost because they're a bunch of weak girls. Except for Tracy. He's no McLady.
I can't believe you found me out. You sure got me! I'm no cheerleader; I'm a hater.

    Go Spurs!

The statement not applying to you in particular does not mean there is no factual basis behind it.

my feeling is that the chance of sf3 coming back be half as good as he used to be is about 50%. imo we'd all set our expectations right around there.
