Haha, who'd you have.. Staci Smith?

    She's cool..

Regressions are probably what you need to know for this fun problem. Though I'm too lazy to figure out how to apply it since I won't be available for the job.

I was going to say the same thing about internships. $5 is still > $0.

I think the new Miami Heat coach started out as a video editor for the Heat and gradually got promoted to...head coach. Crazy huh?

lol i had her and loved her class.... video taping exams ftw!

I made an A in that class and my biggest regret in college was not TA'ing it the next semester.

Well, regression using the factors that are most likely to be correlated is a good idea, e.g. previous year's 3pt%, 3pt% from 2 years ago, 3pt% from 3 years ago, etc. FT% might be a decent predictor as well. The trickier part is for the stats (age) that may be non-linearly related. If you ignore those, and just focus on the linear, then you should be able to do this pretty fast in something like MATLAB, which can solve the required matrix inversion. Dunno if EXCEL can do it.

The constraint about predictive ability (and not just past data fitting) should not be a big deal, as long as the predictive model you choose doesn't have a ridiculous number of inputs.

that would be cool to take the intern then go for like 2 weeks. After you meet all the players just quit.

I did, but I got two error messages when sending my email to the designated address. I ended up just emailing my submission to the VP of Basketball Ops and he is going to make sure it's submitted officially. Now I can get back to doing the other work for the Rockets that I was doing prior to working on my contest submission!

I didn't apply to this position but here are my thoughts on your post and its main question. I doubt you could simply do a "basic" simple linear regression as it probably is not linear i.e. some variables will not increase linearly but possibly in a quadratic or cubic function. Thus, you may look at some type of moderated multiple regression, hierarchical linear regression, mediated multiple regression, etc... although I think regression would be the simplier route to take, HLM or SEM would work as well.

Thus, you could include whatever variables you think would make sense like previous year's 3pt%. In terms of age, it's a continuous variable and is not a problem (even with non-linearity in predicting 3pt%). However, the trickier part comes into categorical predictors such as race or maybe shooting hand (left or right). You would contrast code the predictors and go from there. Overall, I would go after a hierarchical linear regression looking at the incremental increase of variance in each variable to see which variables add the most to the model (r^2, or the variance the variable explains on the other variable). The beauty of multiple regression allows you to control for the other variables while viewing one, thus overcoming the problems of high correlations between variables. Then, possibly throw in some moderators and analyze for any assumptions you have made e.g. normality, homogenity of residuals, etc... just my two cents... good luck to anyone who applied.

Isn't the deadline already gone when this got posted? Edit: Nevermind, I misread.

Best of luck to the contestants.

Sorry, I can't say much since I signed a confidentiality agreement this year, as I did last year. One project I can't really comment on, the other all I can say is I am helping them with their Draft prep.

I took her last semester. Me and my friends called her the alpha male.

You video taped her lectures? I don't see why anyone would video tape the exam...profits?

Wow. i would have wanted that job. I'd be doing something i really love and not to mention, $5.85/hr is already managerial salary in our country, Philippines.

But then again, we do have Mcdonalds cheeseburger meal for $1.50.
