Mike Miller is a fit, but watching him the last two years in the playoffs, he looked like he was cruising around on a spare tire. Just always seems really beat up and doesn't move well, though he does hustle. Reminds me of Bob Sura when he was here. I think he'll get more than the minimum, and I don't think we'll offer more than that based on the fact that we have Casspi and Reggie Williams on as shooting specialists. Camby makes much more sense as Dwight (injury) or Asik (trade) insurance.
May not even matter, "Miller is reportedly also drawing interest from the Grizzlies and Thunder, but the sharpshooting swingman might not make it to free agency. Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reports the Cavs are "seriously considering" placing a waiver bid on Miller, which could land him in Cleveland without having to deal with free agency."
i was sad when the Rockets traded Camby because he was good for us when he played, it is amazing how we have seemed to get a good input from older players over the years. Kevin Willis was great for us(going back a fair way), Camby was good, Mutombo was great in his role.
Very true, I don't expect much from that guy anymore. He hasn't improved that much since his first year and once we get that veteran PF and Camby, there's no use for him.
camby's already 39.....and will be 40 by the time playoffs start.....no way we should be wasting time on him now
I'm sure someone has mentioned this already, but aren't we already at our max 15 roster spots? Would we then, if we add anyone else like Miller or Camby, waive BJ Young's $490k non-guaranteed that we just said we were signing him to? Poor guy...
deke's numbers the season before coming to h-town: 5.6pts, 1.9blks, 6.7rebs, 48%FG, 68%FT cambyman's showing this past season: 1.8pts, 0.6blks, 3.3rebs, 32%FG, 42%FT
I always saw smith as an undersized center, dude cant shot but hustles (cuckwagon). I thought camby was more of a 4-5 combo player. and with D12 and asik at center why not offer mutumbo or yao the vet min for a chance at a ring? I kid I kid
Personally, I want the Rockets to save the room exception until after the trading deadline, when there will likely be an unusually high number of veteran buyouts from teams racing to the bottom of Tankapalooza 2014. One thing to keep in mind is that unlike the veteran minimum, the room exception does not begin prorating downwards until January 10th, so if you're signing someone late in the year, the difference in take-home pay can be significant. Let's take for example a player like John Salmons, who's an excellent candidate to be traded and immediately waived at the deadline this year (February 20th, 2014). Assuming a customary 48 hours to clear waivers, such a player could at the earliest sign with a new team on February 23rd, the 118th day of the season. As a veteran with 10+ years of experience, if he were currently a free agent, Salmons would command a minimum salary of $1,399,507 if he were signed prior to the first game of the season. If he were to sign for the room exception, he'd instead make $2,652,000, a difference of about $1.25M, or a 100% bump in salary. If the Rockets instead attempted to sign him at the earliest possible date after he is waived after the deadline (February 23rd), he'd be entitled to a prorated 10+ veteran's minimum of $1,399,507 x (52/170, the remaining days left in the season) = $409,731. Alternatively, he could sign for the room exception, which would be $2,652,000 x ((170-45)/170, 45 days between Jan 10th and Feb 23rd) = $1,950,000, a difference of about $1.55M, an increase of nearly 400% Thus, the Rockets will be able to offer significantly more than other contenders chasing veteran mid-season free agents if they wait on using their exception. Additionally, they'll have a better idea of what holes they need to fill due to injury and lack of production. It is how the Zombie Sonics were able to attract Derek Fisher two years ago, and how the Spurs signed Charlie Ward away from the Rockets in 2004. The team doesn't need to be completely finished and flushed out on opening night. Like the Mighty Ducks picking up Russ Thompson to teach them how to play like the real team USA against Iceland, making an in-season addition late in the stretch run to shake up the team and motivate them works pretty well.
For what it's worth: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/knicks/post/_/id/47202/source-camby-to-play-until-15-then-coach Among these teams, I think only Houston and Miami can offer more than the veteran minimum. So, if Camby says "Room Exception and I'm yours, otherwise, I'm heading to the Clips," what do you do?
I'd clip off negotiations. I want him for minimum. I'd promise to give him burn (which Woodson didn't). I would even promise to work with him in February to find a new home if he were flat-out unhappy. But, I'd save the exemption.
The only way you give him the room exception is if you have minutes and that would mean an Asik trade is imminent.
Fine give him 200 k more than the min lol. Plus, I've heard that there's no state income tax in Texas.
If it's vet contract, Miller will be great pick up. IMO, Miller is as clutch as Ray at this stage as shoot, an underrated player.
