    Rockets just assigned Smith to the Vipers. I guess they signed him not to lose him, then sent him back there to keep getting work.

    That's exactly right. After the trade deadline, when the usefulness of expiring contracts has either passed or been utilized, I think you can expect Thabeet and possibly Flynn and Williams to be cut and to see Smith and perhaps Adrien brought up/back to the team.
