i don't understand why we'd trade for butler. if caron butler is your second best player, you're not going to contend for a title. plus we have no idea where yao is going to be at health-wise next season. i'd rather continue the youth movement and build for the future.
Ok, let's say next year we have Yao back and Caron is with us. Subtract say Battier because he has been deemed expendable from another member, and not hypothetically add another player to replace Battier because right now we don't know what we can get for Battier. And then let's say we somehow kept the rest of the roster intact, even resigning Scola and Lowry. You think that team can go to the Finals as is? Again, I'm just not enamored with Caron. I just think we'll be a middle of the pack team with him.
i agree with you there. i don't think he'd help all that much. the only thing i like about the deal is that we'd have a good amount of cap space in 2011
Agree with v3.0 and BK219. I'm just not very high or sold on Butler. Not a contender without him, not a contender with him, imo.
Yes, I think it's possible. Of course, Yao has to come back close to what he was before and all the other players need to maintain their current level of play but I do think it's very possible. I think this team has so many important pieces. The only two weaknesses are a scorer at the wing and a big man. Once we have those I like our chances.
Just like I said earlier, IMHO I think we're still a middle of the pack team with Caron in the fold. He's a good player, no doubt, but not someone I would think of if building a roster to win a ring. And for the person who posted that Caron Butler music highlight vid, appreciated the thought but I didn't watch it cause I hate music highlight vids. I find them corny and outdated, reminds me of those NBA highlight vids where Magic had the Control song by Janet Jackson and Larry Bird had the John (Cougar) Mellencamp song. Makes it even lamer to put some gangsta rap over the highlight vid.
Haha. I found an old post that explained everything. Sorry for posting that question before I did some research.
If we use last season as a basis for getting past the first round. We will basically replace Artest with Butler (could be considered improvement) with the addition of Ariza (who may or may not be better with Yao back). Landry and Brooks keeps improving and we added Budinger. We also have room to resign Scola and Lowry and have the MLE and Bi-Annual Exception (I think) to spend. Don't forget, we'll have a good 1st round pick this draft as well. This is under the assumption that Les will be willing to hit LT for one last go with Yao and company. Does this make us a contender? I believe so.
from WojYahooNBA on twitter "The 3-way trade talks with Wiz, NY and Houston haven't progressed today, source says. NY and Wash waiting to hear from HOU to advance ball." looks like it's Morey's call right now.
and to respond to the post you quoted, Shaq has been playing better now that he's more involved in the offense and getting more attempts, he's averaging something around 16 points the past 11 games.
Here is my argument, not saying anyone has to agree but here it goes: When someone says are we good enough to win a ring, the first thing that comes to mind is 'can we beat the Lakers' is it not? Then lets look at it like this. The team we had last year took the Lakers to 7 games. I suppose some can argue 2 games were gifted because the Lakers didnt play up to their potential. The argument from me is we had lost Yao! So to that last year's team, you add back Yao, add C. Butler, Ariza and Artest are a wash, while Brooks and Landry are much better. To make it simpler lets say this is the only move we make and resign Scola+Lowry. Now this same team with the added firepower still stands no chance against the Lakers? I would think we would. Of course the Lakers shouldnt be the only team of concern but I think a healthy Yao along with our roster already puts us above several others. Of the other top teams, Portland we beat last year w/o Caron, while Denver, Mavs, SA would still be difficult. But the point is we should be able to compete with the best...
I agree with needing a scoring wing and a big man behind yao. But Caron and Big Z don't float my boat as viable answers to our needs. Sure they fit the bill, but to me it's not making any substantial leaps to what we are aiming for.
