Because in terms of the CBA and how much tax he pays , the only date that matters is the last day of the league year. If you are under the tax on that date …. you are free of tax implications. If you are over the tax on that date … pay up. If they cut him now or buy him out that salary is etched in stone into their books for the year. It would be stupid to do this. If they wait and trade him … they can rid themselves of the cost.
