Excellent explanation. This should put to rest those views that this was a bad deal. There is no guarantees but this has alot of advantages especially if Dorsey makes legitimate contributions to the team. I'd bet on that happening but even if it doesn't the cost is less than a million a year to take a look on a very athletic very physical beast. He could become one of the top five enforcers in the league.

Rox is already over Luxury Tax, but they have until Trade Deadline (sometime in Feb, I think) to get rid of enough salary to get back below LT (and avoid paying LT).

So, if I were Morey, I'd sign Deke now. Then there are 3 possibilities:
    1. Best scenario is we get to trade for yet another strong contributor before the Trade Deadline. You don't get rid of much salary here since salary must approximately match.
    2. If no trade, and if the season is looking good, I'd keep my team depth and pay LT.
    3. Otherwise, get rid of some salaries by trading for draft picks or draft rights.

Not sure if you can buy someone out mid season - I think buyout has to happen before season starts. If not, that's another option, last option of course, as we don't get any value by buying out someone other than money.

The way I see it Dorsey is either not a player or his agent is totally stupid. Who in their right mind would lock themselves up for 4 years at that level if they feel they can play? And if they don't feel they can play, then obviously they are going to take the one extra year of security. So obviously he either can't play or his agent is stupid.

I think the Rockets has the upper hand in the negotiation. We don't need the guy right away. So if he balked at the deal, we could just let him sit out. We are already quite deep at the 4.

If he didn't want to be locked up for 4 years, he probably would have got less than what is now.

Looks like the days of bloated contracts have finally ended. We now have a very shrewd GM to get players without over-committing, risking the health of the team in the future.

Agree. Dorsey could play 2 good first seasons and then sign a better contract...
Long time fighting for a good contract, and ... this is a good contract for him? [IMG]
    Anyway, another for Morey.

I thought Dorsey wanted a 1rst round scale contract and Rockets don't, so for that the negotiations were lengthening.

If Dorsey's contract had been for the minimum it'd worked out to be $2,949,023.

Is there still a chance he's being paid only the minimum this season?

To sign Dorsey to a contract longer than two years the Rockets needed to use the MLE. They had to wait for Landry to sign first.

I think Joey Dorsey just needs to accept he is second round for a reason. If that boy really is looking for big time first rounder contract, then I'm sure the entire locker room won't be looking for that kind of arrogance. If Dorsey really was that good, then he would've been picked far sooner (unless if we made yet another landry type steal). I think Dorsey just wants to prove himself no matter what. When him and his agent realized Landry was given another contract, then he probably knows that Rockets are no longer in dire need of him.

So I guess this contract was a great move by the rockets. We are all Dorsey gets to prove himself, if he screws this up, he screws the rest of his career up. So its better to start losing before winning (the irony).

Yeah, that's what I said. Dorsey (or his agent) blinked first. He has very little leverage. Morey could just put the contract on the table and say, "Take it or sit out. With at least 3 guys ahead of you on the depth chart, you are gonna sit at the end of the bench anyway."

The only way we get rid of landry like u say, is if he has a bum knee. I doubt we get a reliable point guard for a bum PF and luther ".127 fg%" head. So your condescending a$$ needs to go to college and work on your reasoning. I never said we had reliable pg's, but we do have 3-4. But nono, ur right, lets plan around a 6' 7" center and trade away our second best PF.

    Ok, true.

But MLE is 5.5. Were the Rockets planning to give Landry almost the whole MLE? I mean, 0'75 per year is very little, you can sign Dorsey for 1 and still count with 4.5 for Landry... Ok, but maybe after you can't sign Mutombo.

It seems like it was almost impossible to sign Landry+Dorsey+Dike, but Morey is going to achieve it by cutting a little the amounts of each contract. I guess this is a good executive.

Why do we need Deke? I mean, he was great for us an all, but if Dorsey develops like we all hope/think he will, can he not play backup C?

Good thinking. I'm starting to believe that Morey prizes high second-round picks over first rounders lol. For the control he has over them as well as the freedom to select anyone without being straddled to a guaranteed contract (and likely roster spot).

Morey: Sup Chris, you want Darrell Arthur? I hear you're high on him and I just picked him up in this minor trade with the Blazers.
Chris Wallace:  I'll give you Donte Green and my first rounder in 2011 for him. Pretty please.
Morey: Hmm...make it your second rounder this year and we have a deal.
Chris Wallace: Wow, fattening up the trade just for me? You're my best buddy Daryl, it's been a rough few months for me as you know with everyone on my ass for that Gasol trade, man just the other day...
Morey: Yeah shut up and just sign the damn papers.

Can always count on you for a great explanation of the details. Looks like another excellent signing by Morey. The guy's on a roll.

I like the signing, but am I the only one here that thinks it's a little weird that they list him a C?(/PF)
