Seems like Morey should point some things out to McHale, that is what good leadership is all about. DD
When he has 4-5 possessions a game where he dribbles the ball for 20 seconds and then either chucks a contested 3 or dumps the ball off to someone else with 2 seconds remaining, it's not too hard to identify where things are going wrong.
Hi again TTNN! Great stuff, as I said! Still , I felt that the extra cut-off you used (Asssist Opportunities per game > 3) may have been a bit harsh, and more importantly - playtime biased: Houston players' Assist Opportunities It turns out that a just little below your cut-off stand some more players with Assist Opportunity level of 2.6 (Casspi), 2.3 (TJ) and 2.1 (Cisco), and that if you make the cut by Assist Opportunity per 36 Minutes, then those players actually have MORE Asssist Opportunities than Howard's (Casspi), or a number very close to his (Garcia). So, my proposed cut-off will include all those, and while at it - I would include Asik as well, since he is the only one left... (see above) Now, I took the liberty of re-calculating your Assist Efficiency stats with all these players included (Jeremy Lin's Efficiancy has grown even higher, to 1.36!): Houston players' Assist Efficiency What stands out is that Garcia is a surprisingly efficient passer in our game - even higher in efficiency than Lin (though he has a low passing volume, of course). This is important these days, when so many CFs yell about Garcia being good for nothing... Note also that Casspi's number is very high (close to Lin's), and that the whole team (except PBev and Asik) is on or above league average (I calculated it for all 453 league players - it's 1.13)
BTW - One important reason that Harden's Assist Efficiency is not that high, is that HE CAN'T PASS TO HIMSELF... He is probably the one Rocket that makes the most out of possessions (With many 3s and many And-1s) and players like Lin, Parsons, Garcia and Casspi get to pass to him (and improve their Assist Efficiency) - a privilage that he lacks...
How was Harden's + - thing -2 last night, when he had a great game, shot over 50%, 50% from 3's, 37 points..... How does plus minus work? ty
It's not a personal stat, but a team/lineup thing, really. It's super-simple too: It counts the score difference (ours minus theirs) during the time that a specific player (Harden) was in the game.
you understand that you need to look at the little green dot, to see how he's performing, and not on the name tag, right?
This is great work and frustrating on two fronts. One, that McHale doesn't utilize the players optimally and two, that this forum can't rationally discuss how best to use a particular player. And I think you know who that particular player is.
Thanks for doing the work. The reason I have a cut off filter is that, when the assist opportunity number is too small, the sample size is too small, thus one or two good or bad play would screw your number in a big way. And when number is normalized like that, it is easily take it like it is without thinking carefully whether the derived number is reliable or not. Just as you indicated there, in terms of Garcia's play making, do you really think he is the best in the team? Given that small sample size, I would put a question mark there. Same with Asik, was he really that bad? That's why I applied the filter. However, the filter set was arbitrary, I was looking at the whole league while I was setting the filter, but did not really look into how many people in the team left. Anyway, in terms of play making, I don't really consider Casspi and Garcia as play maker anyway. They do collect assists, but not really actively play making. But your point is valid, maybe I could loose up the filter a little bit, but the main idea remains the same though.
Thank you so much for speaking out my feeling exactly! Frustration is exactly the word. Then you realized the GM is a number guy, and there is no way the team don't see this, and they still made the decision of going the other way, that makes it even more frustrating.
so what you are saying is that this is the max for Lin. we saw the max with Linsanity which is why your point is rather mute. yes he becomes less efficient but isn't that is what being pointed out for Harden?
but as in an earlier graph, Harden doesn't move without the ball as well as say Parsons so a lot of kickouts by Lin actually go to Parsons and Jones. When Lin gives the ball to Harden it is mainly to let him ISO or initiate the offense.
uh no. Harden 51% AFG Howard 58% Parsons 58% Lin 54% Jones 54% Beverly 50% Casspi 51% Brooks 49% Garcia 52% Asik 47% Smith 63% Motiejunas 38% So the Rockets stand a better chance of scoring points if Harden actually passes the ball to a starting teammate than to shoot it himself.
Great thread! Since i joined to this forum (with Casspi) i heard some guys over here claim that casspi take the ball and shoot, never pass. Well, according to your infograph it is the opposite.
I am not sure you're right. What you cite is AFG (measuring field goals only, if I'm not mistaken) Harden leads the team & perhaps the league in points made from the line. That's one of his main weapons.
Actually, the graphs show that he shoots pretty well, especially for 3pt... (Well, high for our team, which is average in the league) Want some help understanding the graphs, mate?
Yoy are 100% right. As for Omri & Cisco: I didn't really mean that they are (or should even try to be) playmakers I only followed suit since you mentioned Howard (a non-playmaker), and I was curious to check who was next in line.
