FYI, Gilby Clarke is actually a good songwriter. His solo albums are all good. Dilana needs to hook up with him, b/c she can't write songs and has no desire to. There was one episode where they showed each contestant trying to write a song, set to pre-existing 'Supernova' music - her contribution was supposed to be about 'fans on the internet'; she actually tried to incorporate the phrase 'Control-Alt-Delete' into the song. Seriously. I thought Ryan was awful and couldn't believe he made it as far as he did. The only ones I could ever really stand were Magni and Storm. Jeff, agreed on the no women in rock thing. It's why I thought Dilana shouldn't get picked. None of the all-time great rock bands have been fronted by women.
No shocker at they picked Lukas. I had him pegged from episode #1. Two of the three were in hair bands, so he was the obvious pick from his showmanship and look. And they are all in it for the money, so they made the safe choice, as Jason said, and picked the most popular singer. I agree that they will be one and done. They will probably have major drama with Lukas, too. Oh well. I was pulling for Toby. I don't think he was the most talented, but he was definately the most fun and probably the most charismatic. Dilana probably had the most stage presence and talent out of all of them, but I too ruled her out because of her sex. There is no way two womanizers like Gilby and Tommy Lee would ever let their band be fronted by a woman. I really liked Ryan too, but I think they pegged it when they said he should go solo. I was glad when they cut Storm. I was enamoured of her at first, but her over-the-top schitck got old real quick. Magne probably would have been a good pick for them too, but I think his career will really take off after this. He was the most professional and likable contestant. ----------- My pick for the band in the next season: Stone Temple Pilots.
I think they answered my quesiton, "pretend ballsey". They clearly thought she was the stud of the group--and rushed to "help"(exploit) her on their tour, but don't want her taking away from the spotlight and camera on them in their band. What a bunch of rock wusses. I would pay to watch Dilana and the houseband, but not if their set is short and the price escalted to make room for Supernova. And I am saying this as someone who saw pletty of ass kicking Crue and Metallica shows in the mid 80s through early 90s. Dilana and the housebad would have to play a lot of Janis, CCR, LS, and Jagger/Richards type material I would think to stay very interesting I would think. Maybe Bog Segar material too, but it would be awefully funny to hear Dilana sing "Turn the Page" even if the vocals would be cool. As an aside, have ya'll see Rock Star (movie). Though I think he has a poppy-shallow-rap background, I think Walhberg actually could have been a hell of a Rock band front man.
I just KNEW they would be total chickens***s and not pick Dilana. I guess they felt threatened by her (and Toby as well). Yet, she had a great voice, IMO and really fit with the other band members. Lukas, OTOH, doesn't seem to fit at all. I can envision the rest of Supernova just hanging around, shooting pool, doing drugs, laughing and bonding, etc. while little Lukas is somewhere else putting on more mascara. Plus, I think Dilana would have brought in more fans than Lukas ever will. But oh well, not like I was ever going to purposely see or buy anything Supernova-related, anyway, in the future. (Bringing on Lukas turned a 1% chance into a 0% chance with his dismal voice.)
Fine, change it to less than 1 percent. Mainly talking hard rock though. Scar, that wasn't Marky Mark singing in that movie.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202470/ "The majority of the songs are also played by original 80's hair band musicians, including Wahlberg's singing voice which belongs to Mike Matijevic, lead singer of Steelheart. (more)" OK, I just lost some respect for Wahlberg and this Matijevic fellow gained a lot. That dude could belt out a rock song, would have cleaned out the comp in the TV show Rock Star competitions.
First, The Breeders and Sleater-Kinney barely register on the indie rock band list, nevermind the all time greatest rock and roll band list. I considered The Pretenders and Fleetwood Mac, but I guess I was thinking more about really popular hard rock bands because that is what Supernova is. Hard to compare Fleetwood Mac or the Pretenders to them, but not so hard to compare Janis or Jefferson Airplane. Van Halen Aerosmith Led Zeppelin Every metal band in the 80's Lita Ford was NEVER popular enough to even rank highly among her fellow metal folks and Wendy O Williams was even lower on that scale. I guess Joan Jett could qualify. Women are HIGHLY under-represented in rock music and it's mainly because most hard rock guys also happen to be chauvanists. I was around them for a big chunk of my musical life and they preferred women to be scantily clad in front of the stage, not on it. There were hard rock guys that treated women worse than just about any group out there I could imagine. It was most definitely an all-boys club.
Joan Jett and Evanescence immediately come to mind, as well. Regardless, considering this is a "faux" rock band anyway, these guys should have known that get a lot more publicity by allowing a woman to be their front man. No offense, but Motley Crue wasn't so much about the music as it was about the "cool kids" going out and kicking ass. And now they have "Lucas." An eye-make-up wearing, sad in the face kid who honestly had to have his ass whooped in the entire last decade. Ladies and gentleman: I give you the new lead singer of Supernogo:
That will be very difficult considering the fact that the DeLeo brothers are now in a band called Army of Anyone. Besides, you can't have STP without Scott Weiland.
Tommy Lee is in another band, too. Lots of musicians do side-projects. I agree that STP won't be STP w/o Weiland, but I just can't think of another frontman-less band any bigger that would draw ratings, therefore be attractive to the producers. And remember, this show is aimed at a younger crowd, so old rock groups like Van Halen aren't very likely.
Speaking of the movie "Rock Star", I just realized that the band leader of Steel Dragon is the same guy from The Wire on HBO (McNulty). Ha!
You're right. That is the dude. Also check out the singer that replaced Marky Mark in his old band. It's the lead singer from 3rd Eye Blind. He's the one with the PA...lol. They should've combined Rock Star with Boogie Nights. That would've been one he!! of a movie!!! "You're not the boss of Dirk!!!"
