After playing both, I have to say I enjoy Rock band better for playing in a group. But Guitar Hero 2 is still the best regular Guitar game IMO.
I'd go with RB, since as everybody else said the song selection is massive compared to World Tour. There's not much of an exclusive with either since the exclusive GH has are going to be separate games anyway.
Rock Band has a much more expansive "world tour" mode than Guitar Hero World Tour does (ironic given the title) and adds new challenges each week, giving it better replay value. Some of the GHWT mechanics are pretty irritating. The screen layout is much worse than RB for things like star power, score multiplier, etc. When playing in a group, if one person fails, everybody fails. In RB, you can bring failed players back into the song by using your star power to save them. The GHWT menus and interface are a mess. Minor things but they really stick out after you spend time with both games.
oh one more thing to add on along with AGBee's post: the hammer notes in GHWT are less easier to spot (at least for myself) since the top part of the note itself is "glowing" whereas in RB the note itself is physically smaller. made a huge difference for me when playing GHWT since i was focusing more and more on the notes to see if a harder sequence required strumming or not since on some sequences hammer notes are necessary. for me its even harder to spot when in star power mode. while i see the notes i dont want to be focusing more on the notes but more on what my hands are doing.
My son has GHWT and RB. He got a new drum set for Christmas and he plays the practice mode to "play along" with his new set - he doesn't want lessons - kids know everthing... Anyway, the GHWT is closer to the actual play than RB 1 or 2 songs. Most of the RB songs sound horrible but almost all the GHWT songs sound pretty good - even from 1 level and 4 rooms away... Of course if you really don't care and just want to play with the game instruments, I think the RB has a more extensive downloadable song selection.
I got Rock Band for Christmas, but the drums that came with it take up too much space in the living room, according to my wife. You be the judge: Spoiler
Kind of an odd statement because both games use master tracks and support Dolby Digital. If anything the GHWT songs sound a bit thin to me but nothing to gripe about.
which isn't a problem I can borrow a friend's or use my monthly free rental from blockbuster to get it . Do i actually have to earn the songs first before I can import them into rockband 2?
I'm seeing RB2 for $189 most places I've checked...is this the best I can expect? Any way to get a better deal?
Not sure if this has been said but this is what you should do: 1. Buy the Guitar Hero: World Tour complete game (better drum set and it's easier to go GH's drums to RB's than vice versa). 2. Buy a copy of the Rock Band 1 & 2 game disc. 3. Import Rock Band 1 songs to Rock Band 2. 4. Sell Rock Band 1 disc. 5. ??? 6. Profit.
i cant stand the guitar on rock band....the strumming is a bi***. the guitar hero guitars are soo much more smoother and you can feel the clicks register.
Hmmm..that is interesting. Would be like having the best of both worlds? I saw on slickdeals GHWT is 140 at wal-mart right now. Are you using this setup? GHWT instruments with RB2?
This is funny because one of the biggest hardware complaints of GH1 thru GH3 was the clickyness of the guitar strumbars. It was so loud it would sometimes overpower the music coming from the game. I had that same complaint. Now I will admit, it took some getting used to having no click on RB, and RB1's guitars are supposedly more "mushy" than RB2 guitars (I've only played RB1 equipment) but I don't think I miss the clicks.
does anyone find RB2's "hard" level to be a lot more difficult than RB1's? it's almost feels like it matches RB1's expert level.
RB1's expert level was mostly a joke save for a few songs (Green Grass and High Tides) and the metal songs that were mostly just DLC.
Partially true...GHWT has a RB drum mode when it detects the RB drums are plugged in and drops one of the colors, but RB doesn't remap for the GHWT drums, which makes playing some songs awkward. It's generally agreed that the drums are playable cross-games but it's preferrable to use the game's own set. Dumb but of course that's what the peripheral makers want...more $$$.
