If giving cash to political candidates is freedom of speech, then I guess some people just have more freedom of speech than others.

Its sad that a CEO can funnel someone else's money to a political candidate.

on the issue of corporations running ads for candidates, what's the difference between that and Michael Moore's documentaries?

US Rep Grayson from Fla, the guy who got on the floor and said Republicans' healthcare plan was for people to die, submitted four pieces of legislation in opposition to this ruling. one was for corporations to get shareholder approval before they spent money on campaigns.

Get more money into the political system is great, we need more corruption in the government for sure, how else can we compete with China and India?

You should run for Congress as a GOP candidate -- you've got the content & contribution to discussion thing down perfectly.

In fact, perhaps Twitter would buy your seat for you, as long as you only speak in a few characters.

As for whether or not this is activist judicial activity, it's completely hyperactive.

They took a relatively limited case put before them. They decided to expand it to encompass essentially the entire question of campaign finance. They then overruled established supreme court precedent, several iterations of it in fact, when no essential conditions on the ground have changed.

It is as activist as a judicial body can get, and it should be called campaign finance deform. That is all.

I'm with Invisible Fan that I will throw myself at the feet of Google, savior.

Oh please. I have not said anything in this thread. I have just been enjoying watching so many people doing their best impersonation of Nancy Pelosi performing the Black Knight scene in Holy Grail - arms chopped off, legs chopped off, and still screaming 'I'm invincible!'

    LOL

What is being missed in this argument is that this isn't just a matter of free speech but about the ability of corporations and unions to engage in that speech on par with humans.

I personally am leery of the idea of restricting personal spending for political campaigns but I have a hard time seeing how that should apply to entities like corporations and unions.

If I'm not mistaken this ruling gives corporations more power than individuals in regard to political speech since their are individual limits to campaign contributions while a corporation and union can run as many political ads as it wants.

I agree but at the sametime allowing corporations unlimited spending is going to help the situation.

Totally agree we should have full disclosure that doesn't mean that other things can't be done.

Huh? I understand your mirth, but the analogy makes no sense to me.

It's more like a bunch of knights saying "our limbs have been cut off, and in fact everyone else's limbs have been cut off. We're all ****ed, but the guys on the other team don't even know it yet." There's no invincible here beyond a corporate owned and operated nation on its way.

What "liberal" is saying they are invincible?

^I love how "and unions" is always reflexively brought in. They have only a tiny fraction of the cash to spend, and this isn't exactly Germany - the power of labor unions is very minor in the US relatively speaking. But yeah the big bad unions are going to spend more than ExxonMobil so now shoudl be mentioned on the same plane? ha right....

so can a coporation "openly" have an agreement with a candidate that they will pay for ads to support that candidate, without giving the money directly to the candidate?

On a related note couldn't the President just declare martial law and ignore Congress and the courts? The compact of our government is that each branch is co-equal and respects the powers of the other branches.

First off unions are part of the ruling so they are germane. Second my point is that for conservatives like Mojoman they should realize that this ruling isn't necessarily all good news for them if they don't like unions. Third, I'm not comfortable with the ideas of both unions and corporations considered on par with humans in regard to political speech.

Yes I know they are germane, but so are LLC's, LLP's,Professional Corporations, Joint Ventures, General Partnerships, Limited Partnerships, S Corporations, NonProfits, Religious corporations, and any other type of legally licensed entity.

However unions always merit special consideration alongside corporations because you've heard it repeated by the media slavishly repeating the "and unions" caveat in order to create some bizarro semblance of balance, so you dronishly feel the need to repeat it too.

Meanwhile in reality, the threat of a union capture doesn't exist.
