I don't know if this is sarcastic or not, but I'll respond to it to casually. (Not meant to be attacking or anything). The stuff with business with Asia is about money. Asia, esp China has a huge UPTAPPED market and of course there are dollars to be made. Nothing unites people more than money. (Of course it eventually divides people as well) Kate Beckingsale is part Asian? She looks 100% white to me. And I'm guessing she considers herself British above everything else. Kristin Kruek has said she identifies herself as Canadian more than race or whatever. I guess she doesn't want to find herself "when keeping it real goes wrong" (chappelle's show ) Yeah some white guys marry asian women, but white women don't marry asian men certainly not in the same numbers. I'm curious, do white men marry black women as much as black men marry white women? Overall races still tend to stick with each other. Asian engineers and nurses are great, but it feeds into the stereotype that that's all they can do. Are there prominent asian lawyers, leaders, executives, artists, musicians, politicians, etc, etc rather than just token few? Further research will conclude that asian still make less average incomes than whites. I believe the only group that surpasses whites are Jews, but some consider them white so it's up for interpretation. And finally, as much as everyone like Yao on this board. I've met some basketball fans from Austin or Houston that still aren't convinced that Yao's legit. I guess nothing's good enough or maybe Hakeem set the standard so high. I personally think the Spurs would trade Duncan for Yao without a second's thought now.
furthermore the point of the article isn't that whites have it easier than everyone else, its that other things, past and present, besides our own initiative affect our fates in lives. from who were born to, to where we're born, to the people who paved the paths before us, etc.
the last point I'd like to make is a white person wrote this, yet everyone jumped on the "complaining black man".
I greatly doubt that the people in Vidor are going to help anyone get further in life. If they could, they would move away from Vidor. You are arguing two different topics. On one hand you are arguing about white privilege and on the other you are arguing racism.
I was running with your "green is the key" argument. White privelage does deal with race (i.e. advantages of being white in a white controlled society), does it not? So were you trying to say there is no white privelage, just a green privelage, or that green privelage is more powerful?
You want to bet that if Michael Jordan went to Vidor that everyone there would be itching to get his autograph? I have a feeling that they would get very color blind. I never said that green privilege negates racism.
Some yes, everyone...I highly doubt. And that's only if they recognize him as Mike..so he couldnt be in a car, sitting down, looked at from the back, etc. So how does green privelage relate to this issue (which deals with race, not necessarily overt racism)?
Kate Beckingsale is part Asian. She doesn't deny it and claimed to look Oriental when she was a child (according to Wikipedia). On a related note, all-American he-man white guy Keifer Sutherland (Jack Bauer of 24) is rumored to have the hots for Japanese girl Reiko Aylesworth (Michelle Dessler of 24). The point I'm trying to make is the hardcore White bigots are not as powerful as you think. They are astounded and distressed at number of White guys (yes, some of them are White bigots themselves) marrying Asian women. If they're willing to marry Asian women, why wouldn't they promote a Chinese guy? Ummmmm?
I love the argument that white's often use that America doesn't see white/black/yellow/etc. Instead, America only sees green. Coincidentally, who owns all the green? Whites. Is this from Resevior Dogs?
I have no idea what you are asking and still do not feel like you have ever made a point. You seem to keep confusing the two subjects. Your Vidor example is an example of racism, not white privilege.
I took an African Religion and Philosophy course with a black instructor as part of my International Studies Minor for my undergrad business degree. I don't know if the tone was apologetic, but it seemed mildly revisionist, in all, and (unfortunately) like any AA Studies class on a non-Ivy campus, 95% of the students were black, and the lectures seemed to take on a pep-rally atmosphere. Hate to say it, but AA Studies seemed to me like the intellectual and political Achilles' Heel of otherwise worthwhile liberal academia. The awarding of grants and tenure, and the charging of tuition to subsidize Black Socrates and Black Pharaoh yarns, and Afrocentric "perspective" to the dissemination of historical facts and sociological concepts have given conservative intellectuals all the rhetorical ammo they need to ram Intelligent Deisgn Theory (Jesus, or Aliens?) through the curricula of rural school districts and, more likely, the ever increasing number of home-schooled or private school programs, along with, eventually, every single (Non-Catholic) Christian College in the country.
There are plenty of minorities that have a whole hell of a lot more money than my white ass. We have already established that blanket statements are ridiculous.
Lets take a look at the top 10 richest Americans. Or how about lets look at the makeup of the Fortune 500 CEO's. Or lets break down the composition of high-level government officials. The ridiculous part is implying that there is not a single person of color that has more money than any one random white person. We are talking about who has the controlling interest of the majority of the $$$, not if Michael Jordon is richer than you.
So you wanna play that game? Lets play you name one and I'll name one. Lets see who wins. So its my turn? Les Alexander. Ok, your turn.
Since they're the best engineers, perhaps they're more suited to do engineering stuff than to do Ken Lay stuff. Have you noticed that a lot of Asian multinational companies in the States staff mostly White guys for upper management? Have you notice very few if any Asian reporters on Foxnews and yet Rupert Murdock is married to an Asian woman? Perhaps qualification is the issue and not racism.
