Should the Rockets have made the 1996 trade for Charles Barkley?

Barkley, himself, was not the problem. The players they had to give up for him was the problem with that trade.

Offensively and rebounding, Barkley was still a beast. He put up a 117 and 116 ortg. He had OK efficiency but was dropping off.

Cassell had some later years where he was nearly as productive with Milwaukee going by ORTG.

Horry was more of a super sub, never averaging 10 ppg, but Cassell had several years of 20ppg and 6apg.

Barkley was 33 and a terrible defender. But Hakeem and Drexler were aging too and they were going all in.

When u get the opportunity to acquire a top player - you do it.... It was very disappointing to lose Bob n Sam....

Who would be present day comparison? Be like giving DMo, Capela and filler for LMA...?

Kevin Willis and Eddie Johnson REALLY gets us past Seattle.

    Horry's lost his mind.

Maybe but Aldridge is significantly younger and plays defense (while being worse on offense and rebounding). 29 vs 33

Also who knows if Dmo and Capela can be 20ppg scorers and make an All Star team like Cassell did.

I really felt like it was to be able to beat the Sonics, and it did work 1 year, then we lost to the Jazz.

I understood it then, I understand it now. My only regret is I'd have liked to have seen Sam Cassell and Horry and could we have won anyways.

Also general rule in almost any sport and especially the NBA, you always trade 4 quarters for a dollar, and hope for the best.

It's always harder to find superstars than role playes.

If I'm not mistaken, the Rockets almost traded for Gary Payton that year too but it fell through.

    Rockets May Be After Payton
July 03, 1996|From Staff and Wire Reports

Gary Payton and Charles Barkley, teammates on the Dream Team, say they might soon be teammates with the Houston Rockets.

Payton, a free agent, said Tuesday in Chicago that the Rockets are bidding for his services. Barkley has been mentioned in a three-way trade that would send him to Houston.

"They made their bid. They done came in with a bid and they're trying to do something," Payton said.

"That'll be a good lineup, Barkley, the Dream [Hakeem Olajuwon], Clyde [Drexler] and myself. That'd be a nice little lineup and we'd win a few ballgames."

Teams are not allowed to make offers to free agents until Tuesday. Any offers tendered before that time could be viewed as tampering.

The rumored trade involving Barkley would send Robert Horry and Sam Cassell from Houston to Denver, with the Nuggets signing free-agent center Dikembe Mutombo and shipping him to Phoenix.

    We disagree.

    Sincerely,
    Scottie Quitten & Eddie Griffin

People who trash this trade in retrospect need to remember how truly pathetic the Rockets were against the Seattle Supersonics from 1993-96. They won 13 in a row over us leading up to and including that 4-game sweep. Think about that. 13 straight wins!

The Rockets would've been knocked out in the 2nd round in 1997 had they not had Barkley. And it's not just overcoming Seattle that the trade allowed us to do. For 2 straight years, the Rockets had been a mediocre regular season ballclub. Adding Barkley helped them win 57 games and secure the 2nd best record in the West which not only meant home court over Seattle but also an easy first round opponent in Minnesota.

Yes, it wound up being a one year window to win another title, but keeping Horry and Cassell around wouldn't have helped us remain contenders. You weren't gonna rebuild the team around those two once Dream and Clyde enter the twilight of their careers. The real mistake wasn't trading for Barkley. It was the series of horrible trades, signings, and draft picks by Rudy and CD in the years to follow.

We were close to beating the Utah Jazz too, when Barkley tore his shoulder muscle, and we were left with Harrington as the starting PF IMO.

The bear hug was awful no doubt, and deprived us of a chance to win.

Barkley finally put us past the Seattle Supersonics. Kevin Willis was a fine regular season player, who always faded in the playoffs. He only won a ring as an older role player.

Yeah, sonics really had our number until Barkley. So happy we didn't meet them in championship years... I always wondered about 93...
