How long had you lived in Houston, and how well did you know the roommate when y'all agreed to live together?
if they know they're under surveillance, they'll be less likely to break in to your home. even a fake camera is better than nothing
I had been living there for 6 years at the time, and he was one of the first people I met. I wouldn't be surprised if you knew him - he graduated from BHS in 89 or 90. It turns out he was one of those guys who had a lot of skeletons in the closet.
I am so sorry to hear you and your family had to go through something like this. I hope whomever did this is caught.....or at least karma comes back to bite them in the ass. One Question: You mention they stole your phones......I'm hoping one of them was an iPhone and it was registered on MobileMe. Cuz if so, you can track that sucker and maybe find who did this. Good luck and godspeed in your family's recovery!
My wife's former manager had her home invaded in Colorado Springs. The apparently kidnapped some woman from New Mexico and drove to Colorado. The woman escaped so the guy breaks into my wife's managers home through the front door, kills her dog and assaults her. I don't know what assaults means in this case but her manager had to take a leave of absence for about 4 months because of the incident.
damn im not sure why some people think home invaders (which to me are different from burglars and petty thieves) are gonna be afraid of dogs. these guys are sometimes willing to kill. if they have the balls to rob a house and threaten the people who own the house while they're IN THE HOUSE, they're not gonna be scared of killing a big dog. it's not like they come into the house without a weapon (the weapon usually being a gun)
Got your message. I don't recall the name. However... Thanks to Facebook, I searched the name and it came up with one match with a mutual friend from BHS. I sent her a message. Also, I'm going to a BHS happy hour this evening, so I'll see if anyone else recalls him. I'll keep you posted.
Here's her reply. David lived down the street from me in Bellaire and I think we had a few classes together. I don't know him real well. He had a sporty car back in the day, maybe an Eagle Talon. He recently added me as a friend on FB, but he never sent a message or anything. Do you want me to ask him something for you? HAHA If I can recall, I'll try and bring him up this evening.
Damn, big body. That is horrible. I'm so glad everybody's relatively okay. I agree with whoever it was that recommended therapy for the kids. I'd recommend it for the whole family. I've been burglarized a few times. One time I was spending the night at a girlfriend's house and came home the next day to find my door wide open and everything gone. I mean everything. Even my toilet paper. And the burglars had made themselves right at home, preparing a whole meal from my kitchen and eating it in my living room. They had clearly cased the joint and knew I wouldn't be home that night. I've also been held up at gunpoint, but that time I was on foot. I gave the guy the $80 cash I had on me and he also took my cigarettes and lighter. I got up the nerve to ask him to leave me a cigarette (if you're a smoker, you never wanted one more than after having a gun pointed at your head) but he just said "Shut up, b****" and took them all. I was lucky not to be physically harmed in any way. Years ago, my mother's best friend entered her apartment and was immediately knifed to death by a couple of young kids who stole her car and drove it out of town to see family. They were caught and I think they got the death penalty. It's been a while and I can't remember, but it was a really gruesome murder. It's a damn scary world out there. Last night as my girlfriend and I were trying to fall asleep we heard a scary noise at our back door and our dog was really acting strangely. But he wasn't barking, which he'd normally do if a stranger walked in. Then we heard another noise and realized there was no way we could just let it go. I patrolled the house, every corner and closet, on crutches. Ultimately it turned out to be nothing, but it was pretty scary looking around with no weapon and in such a vulnerable state. Still, better me than my girlfriend. We have a big dog that would scare off most intruders (Lab/Pit mix), but there's still nothing scarier than believing there's a stranger in your house. Again, I'm so glad you guys made it through the night. Don't assume you're going to be okay emotionally though. This sort of thing can really do a number on you. I'd see a professional, at least once, as a family, to be sure everyone's working through this however they need to.
If they shoot the dog the gunshot will be noticed by somebody, and as somebody else pointed out, anything that will draw attention to robbers can scare them off. Also, you're not going to wake up with a gun to your head if you have a dog, either the barking or them making noise will wake you up and give you at least a little bit of time to do whatever you want to do in that situation.
If the roommate wanted it, he could have easily taken it. He knew where it was. I suspect that he did not tell Sapp & Co. about the location, as it would have been too obvious.
taking it himself would have been the "too obvious" part. besides, what are you doing telling your roommate you've got a couple grand lying around and this is where you can find it? but yea, he coming unscathed is a little more than suspicious.
