If you pass by Iowa City, visit the Amana Colonies and get some cheese.

You guys are awesome - thanks for all the suggestions so far! I will definitely check out some of these. We like nature things including national scenic areas, state parks, etc. - driving around and short walks (we have one person recovering from surgery so no serious hiking this trip - amusement parks are out for now also). Museums, historic homes, botanical gardens, sculptures, etc. are great, though we don't have a huge budget so probably only those with fairly cheap admission. Anything that's just worth driving by and looking at/ taking a picture of is always good too. :)

Go to Minneapolis. Call rocketjudoka in the middle of the day and ask him to blow off work and show you the local brewpubs. Have fun. (I know I did.)

Des Moines also has a fair collection of Warhol at the Art Center. The original "Sticky Fingers" album art is my favorite. Campbell Soup is also there.

The collection is in Des Moines because Halston, a Des Moines native who is said to have had a lover's spat with Warhol, donated the collection because "no one will ever see it in Des Moines".

If you are thinking about going, you might want to call first. Part of the exibit tours around the country and might not be there.

But the Museum of Science and Industry is a must to visit. I also think some of the Frank Lloyd Wright houses are on the south side, but I only did a tour of them when I was a kid, so I could be wrong.

If you're into amusement parks, Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH is a must.

Do you know the name of the place in Minneapolis that's a restaurant/bar/bowling alley? I think it's across from The Jungle Theatre. I loved that place.

I think that's it. Lots of fun drinking in Minny. Fun after parties too. Every night we were there we were invited to one. If it wasn't for the weather, I'd consider living there. Great art town, great veg restaurants, great bars. I really loved it even though I was there in the dead of winter.

There isn't much in midwest until you hit the lakes. But once you get up north, it's beautiful in every state. If you go to Chicago - a worth city btw - don't miss the national shore lines/sand dunes near Chicago. I'm pretty sure it's in the state of Indiana, but somehow the nearest city is called Michigan City. The shoreline and Lake Michigan are gorgeous. And if you are into visiting the college town, you can go through south bend(Notre Dame).
