I'm fairly certain that Cbud is an awful dancer as well, and probably loves 70s rock.

Of course Chase is telling the truth, but at the end of the day, we got him, so it is all good.

I think he will be special, a guy who has that kind of smarts and athleticism, and confidence, could be amazing.

    WOOHOOO !!

Good job scouting department, and thank you Detroit.

I bet C-Bud could run and jump over most of the posters here, like Clyde back in that great college dunk!

I wasn't racist, because my introduction to racism was too confusing. When I was five, a kid said "A fight, a fight! A n***er and a white! Come on n***er: beat that white!" First I had to ask what a n***er was. Then when I was told, I was confused because it seemed like the white was supposed to win the fight, in that case. The whole thing was just confusing from day one.

Then there was a thing called "n***er knocking," where we would knock on someone's door and run away. But we were white, so again the whole concept of it being a "n***er" thing was just confusing.

And THEN, at the YMCA swimming lessons, there was one black kid. We had to get naked to get in swim trunks. And these two white kids were staring like fools at the black kid's Sheboygan; even at five I was like "That's gay" and the white kids seemed lame, not the black one.

I guess what I'm saying is I was naturally homophobic, not racist! :p

I can see what Bud's talking about. I was watching the documentary "Gunnin for that #1 spot" where they took the best high school players (Evans, Jennings, etc.) and put them in a match. There was this white kid with red hair that stuck out like a sore thumb out of all the players. There were other white players there too of course, like Kevin Love, but because of his small size and red hair, everyone from Beasely (who called him sumato) to the commentator was needling him because he was such an easy target.

You could tell it started to get to the kid, he felt like an outcast and clung to Kevin Love at times (who stuck up for him when Beasely was constantly getting in the kid's face).

The thing about stereotypes is that even when they have some basis in truth, people tend to put way too much stock in them. The fact is that whatever traits might tend to exist in a particular race, people of all races vary widely in every way. In basketball, and in other areas, people sometimes put more stock in their prejudiced expectations than they put in the evidence that's right in front of them. So, Chase Budinger and Yao Ming are "soft", even when they're throwing down dunks through fouls. Are white and Asian players actually softer than black players? I don't know, but it's absolutely moronic to consider a player's race when you can just watch his performance.

You're seriously going off of that. I guess tall guys arent as creative dunkers because the last three times a midget has won it.

Tom Chambers is one of the greatest dunkers ever.

Brent Barry ftw. that was an empty arena at San Antonio but I have to admit everyone was wowed b/c he was white and dunked it from the FT line. made the drive from Austin well worth it. i guess the stereotype worked in his favor in that case.

I'm basing this on biology and genes. Why don't you go look it up? It's not racism, it's genetics.

Racial stereotypes are social generalities based on some truth. White guys generally have less hops than black guys and most of the explosive players in the NBA have some black heritage.

Stereotypes are kind of an aggregate of empirical observations of the people who make up society observing certain groups over time. If everyone you see who wins in the 100 meters for 40 years is black, it's natural to shorthand the idea that black runners run fast. The idea of stereotypes themselves I don't think is valuative. Like anything stereotypes can be used for evil purposes but acting like there's no differences between populations is probably more harmful since it's in fact untrue and basing policies and social rules assuming an untruth isn't great for society.

I mean look at it this way... you want your team to waste a lottery pick on Joe Alexander in a vacuum coz he can run some drills and pump some iron? Or you want them to be real and consider the track record of athletic white players in the league? I mean it's at least worth a second thought right? Stereotype or no.

My takeaway from Bud is a little different. He probably did in fact drop in the draft due in part to his race. Athletic white guys in the NBA are like a role reversal of society in general. They're the minority and they face the same sort of doubt, criticism and lack of opportunity that black Americans used to face across the board in society. Most dudes can't handle that. Being a minority is hard even if you have the talent when everyone is doubting you or rooting against you. Props to Bud for staying strong and ignoring the haters. He might be an outlier but he's definitely out there representing.
